I got out to Encanto in the afternoon with a 2:30 tee time. Rate was $45 with cart. The course wasn’t full but a number of players out. They have taken protective measures in the clubhouse and on the course. A plexiglass window separates you from the pro shop attendant. No sand bottles on the carts, no rakes in the bunkers and the holes all had foam inside to keep you from reaching all the way into the cup.
I was paired up with two walkers and pace was good all round. Didn’t have to wait besides the group in front of us waiting for players to clear the green before teeing off on a few holes.
Conditions were fair throughout. The fairways had good grass coverage with few bare spots. Anything off the fairway was a crap shoot. No rough to speak of but lots of weeds, dirt and bare spots. The greens were all consistent and putted well during the round. Bunkers were good with plenty of sand.
As I’ve reviewed before, the course isn’t overly challenging with plenty of chances to score but some holes will sneak up on you. Right now, Encanto is a good place for a fun and stress free round.

I have to put a plug in for this golf course, there have been major positive changes. This is a traditional old school layout, another Billy Bell design (he of Papago, Torrey Pines, etc.) dating from 1936. It is a unique setting in the center of Phoenix and historical neighborhoods. Beautiful historic homes and downtown high rises are some of the views from the course.

It is a great course to walk and very playable. The greens are the defense here, if you get out of position it's pretty much a 3-putt waiting to happen. The course is in the best condition I have seen it in 20+ years (of course it will be torn up in a week for overseeding...) And they are finally in the process of refurbishing the bunkers, the new ones are great, better than many of the upscale resort courses.

They have completely remodeled the restaurant and bathrooms and they are both first rate. The value is exceptional for the current product, go have a throwback day!

My wife and I played Encanto today 7/21/15 at 10am. I've been wanting to get by here and finally did when I saw a GN Hot Deal for $10.00. As others stated this course is traditional old style feel. Its in the heart of the city just north of the I-10 and was built in 1935, Phoenix's oldest city course. It's a locals course so your likely to see alot of singles in t-shirts flying around the course but everyone my wife and I ran into was pleasant and actually hit the ball well enough. I did notice they have a full size range and putting green

We arrived and checked in and of course as a city muni wasnt expecting any service and there isn't which was fine by us. Pro shop help was pleasant and gave direction to get us started which was "your good to go when your ready". I'm a 16 HC so seeing as this course was flat and pretty open I played from the tips which come in at 6400 and make for a couple longer Par 3's. My wife played from the Red tees which still come in at 5000 and IMO don't give her and most-likely other ladies a good chance to score well. After I hit my 2nd shot in the fairway I go to grab the sand & seed and find both were empty. I see two course crew guys sitting under a tree so I ask them if there is a station close by or did I need to go back to the clubhouse and they both say the course doesn't ever keep any divot fill on the carts/course and that they would take care of it??

As for the course it's straight-forward, can be long in spots from the tips and challenging if you hit into the rough behind trees but for the most part scrambling back on every hole is not impossible. Greens are elevated or at least slightly at every hole and today they ran true and pretty quick.

Greens are mostly receptive if you had good trajectory. (repaired 4 of my marks today) There are a lot wet spots, bare spots and some chewed up fairways but the course ambiance is laid back, enjoyable and the city views are unique compared to the other valley courses. For a Hot Deal rate and letting down your guard to just "slow down" and enjoy it I feel its a must play for valley residents.

6/7/15 3:00 pm tee time. Thanks to the longer days of summer it's easy to finish 18 holes later in the day. Also, the course was empty which allowed for a 3 hour round - just fantastic. Encanto 18 was in great condition for a municipal course and considering that the winter rye grass has disappeared. The fairways were mostly good with exception of a few dried out areas. The tee boxed were good and the greens were great. Although the greens are bermuda, they hold up very well and are pretty fast. No cake walk to putt with the grain and pace. Keep in mind, the bunkers are a hazard. They can be difficult to play from.
This is a great facility to just get out there and play, and it's affordable.

I played Encanto on a Friday morning at 1030. GN rate was $25. Summer is coming for Encanto and you can tell. The course is thin in some places but still a fun place to play. The greens were firm and not accepting of shots but once you adjust it's fine. Fairways were thin but still playable. The rough is nonexistent but still playable.
The course isn't overly challenging but can bite you. The five finishing holes are difficult and four of them are long if playing from the tips. Par on #15 is a great score.
Not many people were playing with a lot of singles out. Encanto is a fun place and I enjoy the old school, good old golf vibe it has.

I played Encanto on 1-20-15 at 1:00. It was $20 to walk with a Phoenix card. This course says on it's website that it was built in 1935 and is ideal for the average golfer. I would agree, but would add, there is plenty of challenge for the better golfer as well.

The fairways and greens were in very good condition. The greens rolled pretty fast and true. The rough is currently not overseeded and not penalizing unless you get a bad lie or end up behind one of the many trees or shrubs. The bunkers looked good, but only had about an inch of sand on top of hard pack dirt.

I really enjoyed walking and playing this course and think it's a great value for January golf in Phoenix

While in Phoenix last week, I got a chance to play a few courses, Encanto 18, located in Central Phoenix on 18th Ave and Encanto is one of my favorite places to play while in Phoenix. It is very flat, and easy to walk. It is part if the City of Phoenix Municipal Golf Courses. Encanto has 3 tee boxes, Championship (6,404), Regular (6,040), and Forward (5694). Water came into play on 4 holes. Plays like a Links course. It has a lots of Palm trees and a nice view of the City. Staff is very nice, and helpful. Driving range splits 1st and 9th holes, so there are some balls in the fairways that go over the fence. A lot of locals and kids play here, and they are all very friendly. There is a park behind the 2 green and 3rd teebox that seems to be always busy. You can ride it, but it is an easy track to walk like I said earlier. Because it is a Muni Course, it closes at sunset and the staff pulls the flags. Greens and fairways are well kept, but the water is average. Inexpensive to play, but worth the $18. Hole 8 is a 557 par 5, and it’s long. I have made it there in 3, but not 2 yet. Highly recommend! http://www.golflink.com/golf-courses/course.aspx?course=36034

I played Encanto 6/23 at 0829. The course is a bit different from when I played it a while ago.
The greens aren't as lush but still in great condition. They recently aerated so they were a bit on the slow side but consistent. The fairways had some bare spots but didn't affect play. The sand traps were in good shape and had sand in them. Some had less sand than others but they weren't horrible. The rough was mostly weeds and bare spots. The tee boxes were very firm and it was hard to get a tee in some of them.
Overall, for $20 you could do worse in the Valley. I've paid more than that and had worse conditions. Encanto is convenient to get to and fun to play. Not too many people were out playing at the time we played so we were able to get around in about 3.5 hours without feeling rushed.
