I played Painted Mountain early in the morning yesterday for the first time. This is a shorter course through a housing development. I played the "tips", 6021 yards, par 70, 66.3/110. The course is easy to walk, though there are some transitions across low-traffic roads in the development. Take the walker shortcut through the cul-de-sac between #8 green and #9 tee.

Fairways had decent winter rye coverage for a value course and played firm. Rough is typical dormant bermuda/hardpan with some random tufts of winter rye that snuck in. Tees had decent grass coverage but a few were in sore need of leveling. Greens looked good but were very slow; probably the slowest I've played this winter in Phoenix, though this may be to protect them with the 90s heatwave over the next few days. I was only in two greenside bunkers but both had good sand consistency. I also felt like the back nine was in much better condition all around compared to the front.

Finished in a foursome in about 3:25 with only brief waiting on the folks in front of us and nobody behind us, though when we were finishing it looked like it was getting very busy/packed. The only staff member I encountered was the starter, who was very helpful and even got us out early as everyone in our group was ready to go before whomever was supposed to be in front of us.

Played as a 3some at 10:30 am with a tee time reserved by phone 4 days in advance for $22+tax. Bag drop guys were organized with multiple tee times heading out and in at the same time all the while providing information on the course to be expected once we got out there. Cart girl was seen twice before leaving around 12:30pm. Staff was quite attentive and always looking to help. Big plus. The course conditions were green, like a weird amount to be seen in Arizona during the summer (from the course I've played so far this was a breathe of fresh air on a humid one at that). The tee boxes (multiples to be played from) were green and quite soft/receptive. The fairways were good, while at times you felt a bit unfortunate for your ball to actually be sitting down in above normal fairway height grass. This is a plus however rather than playing from dead browned dirt, something all Arizonians know toooooo well. The rough played and meshed in with the fairways, at times confusing me if I hit fairway, but rough was somewhere around 2-3 inches long. The greens, they were beautiful. Accepted 5 iron spin and pitch marks, while rolling around a 9 on the stimp. Soft and slow? Thank you monsoons! They definitely pay attention to keeping these maintained. Bunkers looked great, with plenty of rakes nearby. None of my playing partners or myself were in them but they looked good. This course plays easy, with an index around 61.6, and it lends itself to some fun times. Though houses are nearby all day, they never barge into your round or make you nervous unless you slice it 50 yards every driver. And even then, this course doesn't require you to hit driver all the time. Off the tee position is paramount with your approach shots just requiring you to be on the dance floor. Once your on, the greens aren't deceptive and you just need to have a DECENT putting day to have fun. "Resort" course with cheap prices, this is a great combo. We'll be back, shortly.

Played here 1/13/18 with 2 other players. Our tee time was 7:15am. POP was very good. We finished in 4 hours. Course was in pretty good shape. A few bare spots scattered around. Tee boxes were decent and for the most part level. Greens were in awesome shape, firm and rolled true and held your ball well. Water was clean and fairways were trim. Very fun course to play but not too challenging. I shot a 92 but dropped a 36 on the back 9. I had to play the first 2 holes in the dark which wasnt easy.

Played Wed 5/6, 10:30 tee time but was allowed off early at just after 10am.

Late Spring conditions: Tee boxes in good condition, mostly green and level, though some tee locations were at the end of the tee box so some crowning did occur. Fairways and rough have recently been punched, so odd bounces and rolling next to those little dirt clods was the norm. I'd recommend waiting 1-2 weeks before playing here for better conditions. Greens were fast firm, in very good shape and a bot quicker than the norm. Bunkers were in fair to poor shape; some had enough sand in them for a solid recovery shot while the majority I looked at seemed a bit thin and rocky.

PoP is picking up here: completed the round in 2.5 hours, with multiple groups allowing me to play through almost immediately. Reminder: there is no driving range here, so warm up before you get to Painted Mountain. Also, bring your own coolers and ice; the gas-powered carts here do not come stocked with either, and while the cart lady is always around, you'll want to have ice available to keep you cool in the AZ summer months.

Course is in fine shape, and not crowded, as this is a main destination course for many snowbirds come October-April. The maintenance people are working on the tee boxes, so many white (middle) tees have either been pushed back to near the Blue Tees or moved closer to the forward tees. About 1 club difference plus or minus. Tee boxes are firm, but still in good shape. Fairways are conditioned about as well as I have seen in the Summer (freshly mowed, few dry/empty patches. Off fairway is either groomed rough or hard pan. Greens were hard and fast, but held every shot into them. Bunkers were simply outstanding. Looks like fresh, fluffy sand has been dumped into them, and they were in great shape to any shot you wanted.

The only downside to this course is the lack of a driving range, so warming up is done either at another course or while waiting to tee off. With water all along the landing area on the right side of Hole #1, any lazy or open swing will end up wet, so stretch it out!

Quick update for October 2013: Course reopened after fall re-seeding, still cart path only for a couple weeks more. Fairways are in beautiful shape, lush but still allowing for rolls. The tees are a disappointment: many are still crowned, and already showing signs of wear, in complete contrast to the immaculate fairways. Bunkers have a hard crust, but you can still get under shots for a decent sand save attempt. Greens were a bit bumpy, and the Par 3s already have many ball marks from those who don't repair them. This is one of the best value courses in the Valley in the Fall/Winter season, and it attracts a ton of snowbirds from the Midwest and Canada. Prepare for 4.5-5 hour rounds as the norm. CP

Played PM Sat 3-17-12. Notable that there is no driving range. Also, first hole is HC #1 with water in the RH slice zone, and it’s easy to drive through the first fairway’s dog leg, which goes right. Makes for a difficult start with no range to warm up. 2nd shot is much less foreboding, however.

Course eases up after #1. Flat track, but with some modest elevation changes and plenty of trees and dog legs to keep things interesting.

Surfaces were fine, although our group found the greens to be inconsistent; some faster, some slower, some broke hard, some didn’t break like it looked like they would. I wasn’t in the sand, so no comment on that other than to say that there aren’t really a lot of bunkers on this course.

A couple of fairways are narrow and a bit house-crowded.

Par 70 with the odd par 37 front and par 33 back arrangement. Finished in just under 4 hours. Overall, a fine course in fine shape.

Previous review said course was boring. Don't totally agree as I played with a regular and was able to glean some tips and appreciate the intricacies of the course / greens a little more.

Great fast greens that rolled true. Fairways were in good condition. The only complaint, which is actually a positive, was that a lot the rough had been recently punched with large holes. This was only in non-playable areas adjacent to tee boxes and not really in areas where on eouwld normally play. I took that as a positive as it shows that some courses can be pro-active in their maintenance instead of waiting for summer to force the locals to play in horrible conditions.

I was a little disappointed when I checked in, as their website went on and on about the practice facilities at the course...except, they've now removed the driving range to make room for more houses and the putting/chipping areas were closed.

The course starts with a long dogleg Par 5, so with little to no warmup that's a bit of a challenge. As I got warm, the course played easier. Few traps, and the one I landed in was in perfect condition. Explosion shot, 10 feet from the cup. Not a very penal course; if you make a mistake, recovery is fairly easy. I shot an 84, and that's after making a snowman on the first hole.
