Played Cerbat Cliffs for the first time early on Friday afternoon. I got out ahead of a bunch of walk-ons that showed up right after me, played through a twosome on the front, didn’t really wait again until the last 3 holes when I caught the tail end of the morning rush. Finished in 2:50. $40 with cart. This is a municipal-owned course that exceeded my expectations.

Bent grass greens were in beautiful condition. Smooth, fast, receptive to approach shots. Fairways and rough both great. Tee box grass a bit thin/chewed up in spots. Bunker sand was average. The routing isn’t great for walking but it’s doable if you are a diehard; it is also slightly confusing if you don’t consult the map on the scorecard and pay attention to signs.

I think many people only know this course as “that one you see off the highway passing through Kingman” but it is definitely worth a stop as conditions are great for the money and it has enough really interesting holes, particularly the ones in the hillside/rocky areas, to offset the dull ones.

Played 11-13-16 mid morning joining a twosome and playing in a little under four hours for $40 including cart. Tee boxes were in okay shape with some being a little thin and un level. Fairways were in good shape very green and lush with some minor thin areas. Rough was in nice shape 1-2 inches and very healthy. Was in one bunker that had nice heavy brown sand. Greens were in really good shape smooth, fast and holding shots real nice. Nice course with some scenic holes around the mountains, but most of the course is flat with a few trees along the fairways.

After finishing my first two rounds in Havasu before noon, I decided to drive up to Kingman for my third round of the day rather than playing Havasu Island or going up toward Laughlin/Bullhead. I called Cerbat Cliffs to ask about conditions and the guy scoffed at me and said boldly "the course is in awesome shape!" He was either being really sarcastic or genuine in his confidence. Either way, it was enough to entice me and I'm glad I made the trek. The price was $32.50 ($30 plus tax). I saw a bunch of people on the course as I drove in from the freeway and was worried about how crowded it was, but that turned out to be a shotgun tourney just about to finish up. I ended up playing by myself, playing through one group on the front and then not running into anyone else until the 16th hole. The heat was not a problem as it was only in the 80s in Kingman, but there was a very scary storm hovering over the nearby mountains during my whole back nine. I could hear thunder and see lightning in the distance, but the really bad stuff stayed to the Northeast and the course weather was fine (just quite windy). For the dead of summer, I would say Cerbat Cliffs is in pretty "awesome" shape right now. I was shocked at how lush and green things were and didn't expect to see thick rye fairways and rough on a desert course this type of year. The only drawback is that they keep it a little extra shaggy, so no roll-out on drives and pretty sticky when hitting from it. There were some bad patches here and there, but mostly very nice looking. Bunkers were good, but did have some rocks and pebbles in them. Greens soft and receptive, but not too beat up. Rolled smooth on putts at medium speeds. I did enjoy the layout and setting of Cerbat Cliffs, as well. The layout itself isn't quite as dramatic as some of the scenery around the course (lots of really cool rock formations), but it offers a good variety and just enough challenge to keep you interested. There are a few holes that run right along the busy I-40 freeway, which can be a little distracting. The course finishes really strong with 16-17 especially being pretty dramatic holes running back into a canyon. Most of the greens are pretty benign without too much crazy undulation, but the 16th is a multi-tiered beast that definitely sticks out. I wouldn't recommend driving too far out of your way just to play this course, but it's a nice local option if driving through Kingman and you start to get the golf itch.
