Second round was here today. I had found some decent coupons on their site, but the timing/geography worked better to play here right after finishing quickly at Van Buskirk. Full Friday rack with cart was only $26, so not terrible. It was fairly busy out there, but I was able to walk on and tee up right away as a single. I played through a couple groups on the front, but then caught a logjam of a few slow groups that I was stuck behind the rest of the way. Total pace was still only about 3:45.
The conditions here are very rough. This is a course that epitomizes the term "pasture golf" and not necessarily in a charming way. Conditions are consistently inconsistent. Some areas were decent with good grass. Others were terrible with gopher mounds, hardpan, weeds, random tufts of long rough, etc. Hard to break down specific aspects because every shot seemed like a different lie. The front nine greens were okay and reasonably consistent in their mediocrity, but the back nine greens were bad. Some aeration has been done recently on the back, so you can still see sandy remnants of the holes. Then, there are a lot of completely dead patches that are just filled in entirely with sand. Speaking of sand, I will have to go back and look at my pictures, but I don't think there are any actual sand traps on this course. If there are, they are few and far between without coming into play much.
The overall experience is about what I expected, so I knew basically what I was going to be getting myself into. The front nine layout is quite uninspiring, but it does get much more interesting on the back with a more scenic setting and trickier holes. Still, the routing is kind of repetitive back and forth on both sides. It was really windy during my round, so that added some challenge as almost every hole was either directly with the wind or against it with at least a 1-club difference both ways. This is a course I would not recommend to anyone except the hardest of the hardcore collectors like myself. I am glad it has been checked off my personal list!
