All in all… pass on this track. The course used to be in great shape years ago, but since new ownership focused on events the course has run down to nothing more than a dog track. It’s a sad sight. The range is in such poor shape it’s not worth the time or balls… and they close range at 3:00pm. Come here to enjoy the non-golf events like the live music, ocean, and sunshine, but don’t expect any quality golf experience.

Played Saturday the 24th. Weather overcast with some wind and cool. Had a discounted round, but full rate of $89 is scary high. Tees are a little chewed up and uneven, but not
horrible. Fairways a little thin, but doable. Greens were pretty good. Bunkers were fine.
POP was slow at about five hours. Marshall told us on ten that he found the problem to the slow play. But they were on 17 so not much would change. Overall average conditions that seem to be okay. Every time I go here I want to love it, but never quite do. IF not for a heavy discounted green fee, I'd rather go play Morro Bay. For what they charge one would expect more.

Walked the Front 9 Blues (6550/71.8/131) in 2H as a single on a GN "Hot Deal". Weather was around 75, sunny, humid and breezy. Wanted to get out and hit some used clubs I purchased on eBay. A hilly course with thin, hard fairways does not make for a good experience. I took a drop on #3 fairway from a burrowing animal hole and my ball did not stop rolling until it was on #7 green about 75 yards away? I did not care to play the back 9 today after what I experienced on the front. Tees look like they are perhaps mowed every 10 days? Furry and unlevel. Fairways and rough both mowed down kikuyu. Little demarcation between the two. Browning, hard and thin, balls could roll a long ways, which is not a good thing on a hilly course. I would venture a guess that these areas have not been watered since the last rain? Traps were poor. Looks like they receive no regular maintenance. Greens were the only good thing about the course, they putted nicely. Soft and medium fast, they rolled well. No ocean views even though you are close to the ocean. Small warm-up range with mats that would accommodate short irons only beside the first tee. No drink cart or on course services, but the pro shop/starter are really nice. Tree lined layout up/down rolling hills that sits down in a valley. Front 9 more hilly, back 9 more flat with plenty of red staked hazards to avoid. Decent amount of doglegs, plus you need to know where to aim off a hill to get your ball to end up where you want on several holes. Overall, average somewhat quirky layout. Usually fun to play but the playing conditions have been deteriorating with each visit. Take my overall course rating with a grain of salt, because 6-7 out of 10 rating for greens pulls up a bunch of 2/3 out of 10 ratings on everything else. The discounted fee I paid was about the same as 2 buckets of balls on a driving range, and the conditions from tee to green are comparable to the average driving range. Okay for on course practice, but I could not recommend anyone come play a serious round here until after a few good rains. Not worth anything in the ball park of their normal fees.

Played Avila with my wife today. Despite the hefty green fees and terrible condition of the course, it was packed! That’s Labor Day Weekend for you. We had a nearly six hour round. If I play this course again before the rains (doubtful) I will play the sand traps as “ground under repair.” I’ve played this course hundreds of times since I retired in Cambria and the only time it was in worse condition was several years ago when flooding washed out several holes.

Walked the Blues (6550/71.8/131) in 3H, 45M early afternoon on a GN "Hot Deal". Played about 6 holes as a 3some, the rest as a single. Weather was around 65, sunny and fairly calm. Tees all over the place. Some were terrible, others pretty good but many were unlevel. Fairways had decent coverage but were more thin than lush. Rough was mostly mowed down and not overly penal other than it is kikuyu. Traps were the worst I have seen on any course in awhile. About half were unplayable mud holes that looked like they had not been maintained in weeks. The others were thin and had not been raked in so long I could not detect a rake mark anywhere. Greens putted nicely. Soft and medium fast, they rolled well, I was leaving large ball marks on approaches. Plenty of trees and hazards to avoid. Decent amount of doglegs, plus you need to know where to aim off a hill to get your ball to end up where you want on several holes. Layout is tree lined up/down rolling hills and sits down in a valley. No ocean views even though you are close to the ocean. Small warm-up range with mats that would accommodate short irons only beside the first tee. Overall, average layout in mediocre playing condition, but it's usually a fun layout to play. Could only recommend if you are getting a real deal.

Rode the Blues (6550/71.8/131) as a single in less than 3H mid morning on a GN "Hot" deal. The weather was around 65, sunny and fairly calm. COVID-19 conditions throughtout, so no services offered. Probably the best I have ever seen Avila look. The tees were all over the place. Some were terrible, others almost pristine but many were unlevel. The fairways had good coverage and were semi lush. The rough was mostly thick and clumpy. The traps need an overhaul. Everyone I saw was raked, but there is little sand and what is there is not good quality. The greens putted nicely. Firm and medium fast, they rolled well. The tree lined layout is up/down rolling hills and sits down in a valley. No ocean views even though you are less than a mile from and can hear the ocean. Lots of trees and hazards to avoid. Decent amount of doglegs, plus you need to know where to aim off a hill to get your ball to end up where you want on many holes. Average layout in mediocre playing condition, but it's a fun layout to play. Small warm-up range with mats that would accomodate short irons only beside the first tee. I joined Dblevs606 and Eli1488 at Avila Beach for their GK match. The course was in ok condition at best. Greens weren’t too bad. They rolled relatively smooth though they were slow. Only the 18th green had large brown spot on it. Other than that the greens were in decent shape. Tee boxes were horrible, especially the front nine. Severely unlevel and patchy. Finding a good stance and a clean hitting surface was difficult at times.

Fairways, had decent coverage but definitely on the thin side. The one good thing about the fairways was they were consistent throughout the entire day. Sand traps were more hardpack dirt than anything. In fact my one birdie today came from hitting a sandtrap and the ball bounced out and onto the green.

The skirt areas around the greens were hit and miss. And more miss than hit. The track is a fun layout. It’s a thinking mans track making you plot your way around for proper angles into the green. There are a couple of fun holes with forced carries over the ocean inlet that help make you forget about the so so conditions.

Rode the Blues (6550/72.2/132) with Mike in 4H, 15M midday for $34 on a GM deal. The weather was around 70, sunny and breezy, 1-2 club wind most of the round. The customer service was good from all encountered. Really challenging, fun layout but the playing conditions were very rough around the edges. Many holes had areas that were soggy due to recent rains. The tees were terrible, worst tees I have played on in a long time. It was like teeing it up in the rough. Good coverage, but they had not been mowed recently and many were unlevel. The fairways had good coverage and were winter thin. The rough was mostly thick and clumpy. Punitive, often hard to find your ball until you were right on top of it. The traps were poorly maintained and the sand quality was poor. The greens were very good however. Firm and medium fast, they rolled nice. Downhill putts were treacherous. There were a couple of pins on crests that if you missed downhill you were going to have 12' coming back. The tree lined layout is up/down rolling hills and sits down in a valley. No ocean views even though you are less than a mile from and can hear the ocean. Demanding layout from the Blues, especially in the wind. Decent amount of doglegs and water, course knowledge would be worth a few strokes on where to aim and how the hills affect the ball once it lands. Above average layout in very mediocre playing condition. Small warm-up range with mats that would accomodate short irons only beside the first tee. No recommendation.

Tee'd off at 9AM on a chilly morning that quickly became a beautiful sunny day. Conditions at Avila are always "average muni" conditions. Today was no exceptions. Greens were rolling smooth, though I've never seen such a disparity in speed between with the grain and against. Super fast going with the grain and very slow against. Made it difficult to dial in the speed. I had 5 three putts in the first 7 holes. Ouch! Greens were also very firm. Not even well struck iron shots would bite and check up.

Fairways were average. For the most part they were decent to hit from but there were a few thin, wet spots mixed in throughout the fairways. Tee boxes were the weak link. Most were patchy and several were chewed up with divots. Having said that I played the 5 par 3 in even par with 1 birdie, 1 bogey and the rest pars so the tee boxes must have been halfway decent.

I managed to avoid the bunkers all day. One of the playing partners was in a couple and they ok (not great but decent enough).

Our group was on the slow side so POP was over 4 hours but we could have easily done it in 3 1/2 hours had we pushed the pace.

Layout is always fun with several holes requiring less than driver for a strategic placement off the tee. There are 3 forced carries over the ocean inlet to keep things interesting and scenic and the same time. Add in some water hazards on a couple of the par 3's and you have the making of a fun course with decent to fair conditions. There is a Golfmoose special ($68 for two w/ cart) that makes it a definite recommendation to play at that price.
