Needed a tune up round before the 2021 BCB starts on January 9th, so I went out to Hunter Ranch with Eli1488 and JusGas88 who served as my caddie since he’s on injured reserve right now. Hit the range which was pretty much only useful for hitting driver as there wasn’t a real clean grass area to be found. Range balls were 50/50 on quality with half being extremely dirty/muddy from the dirt landing area below.

As usual the greens were in spectacular condition rolling very smooth at a fast pace. Fairways were mainly winter thin and brown in color but decent enough to hit from. Tee boxes were the weak link of the course with most being chewed up, thin, brown and uneven at times. Sand traps are in nice shape. I had one trap that was thinner than expected but still very playable. The others were fine. Rough both primary and secondary are cut down right now. Usually if you end up in the secondary area it’s a lost ball but now it’s more hardpack dirt and will roll for quite some time.

We had a nice gap of about 4 holes empty before and after so we set our own pace of play. Restaurant is open for takeout food with a limited menu. Cups are set to normal depth (we left the flagstick in all day). We had a spectator/rider which they appropriately charged us the $22 rider fee for so we had two carts.

Check in was quick and simple. Hunter Ranch is always an enjoyable track and even in the “winter” condition it’s still worth the drive.

A quick update on Hunter Ranch. Played mid morning on a perfect day (weather wise). Temps were in the low 70’s with absolutely NO wind. Hunter Ranch has brand new carts which now have GPS and blue tooth speaker capabilities so you can connect your phone/music. They also have the Phat Scooters which I believe are an extra charge. Gonna have to try one next go around.

Check in at the pro shot was simple and pleasant. I will say that the pro shop is low on merchandise. I was looking for a new shirt and my buddy needed new shoes. Very very low inventory.

We were allowed to ride doubled up without any issues. I didn’t ask but it may be because I usually just throw my clubs on the cart and walk alongside. Naturally, masks are required inside the facility and the restaurant is take out only.

Greens were in fantastic shape. Greens are always well kept at HR but this may be the best I’ve ever seen them. They rolled extremely smooth at a very fast pace. Greens also held well struck approach shots.

Fairways are mostly brown/dormant but still decent enough to hit from. I was in two sand traps and both had high quality sand. Pace of play was ok. We had dropped a car off for service so we weren’t really in a hurry. POP was probably a little under 4 hours.

Hunter Ranch continues to be a go to course. Well worth a 2-3 hour drive.

Played Hunter Ranch today with a late morning tee time trying to beat the weather front coming in. The good news is I stayed dried as we finished in just over 3 hours with minimal waiting on only a couple of the tee boxes. The bad news is fall is here! It was chilly with a 2 club cold wind.

Conditions remain nice all around. Greens were in excellent condition, rolling nice and smooth at a medium fast pace. As mentioned before most greens at Hunter Ranch are double tiered with some moderate slope. They offer a good challenge but nothing overwhelming or ridiculous.

Fairways were pretty decent for the most part with only a few thin/brown areas. The initial rough was very manageable though a few holes had some patchy areas. Outside of the first cut and it was complete hardpan dirt. The skirt areas around the green were in excellent shape. Especially directly in front of the green. Presented multiple options on shot choice.

I was in two greenside bunkers and both had excellent quality sand. Tee boxes were fine. All were level with decent coverage and minimal divots on the par 3’s.

Course layout is great with several elevation changes throughout the track along with some water hazards and forced carries for both aesthetics and challenge. The course also offers a good mixture of wide fairways with some tight “thread the needle” tee shots.

We didn’t have any issues with either of our carts but I did notice that three other carts during the day died in the middle of the round and had to be towed/pushed back. Keep a cell phone handy in case you need to call the pro shop to come rescue you. If I remember right they also offer the Phat scooters as a cart option.

COVID: Cups are back to normal (we left the flagstick in at all times). No rakes in the bunkers, no flags on the practice putting green.

Hunter Ranch is always a fun and challenging course and today was no exception even with the cold wind blowing.

Rode the Blues (6751/72.7/138) in 3H, 50M mid day on a GN "Hot Deal", matched up with Greg. Excellent golfer, fun to play with and it turns out he lives about 5 blocks from me! Sunny, fairly calm and around 85 made for nice golfing conditions. Tees were the weak link. Looks like they heavily sanded them recently? Many sandy areas but mostly well maintained for divots. Fairways mostly lush, nice to play from. Numerous spots soft from heavy watering. Rough was fairly lush close to the fairway. Mostly mowed down, not overly penal. Thinner the farther you got from the fairway. Sand traps had good quality sand. Very well maintained. Large, undulating greens were smooth, medium fast and firm. Showed no evidence of being aerated 3 weeks ago, they rolled nicely. Usually held irons with minor run out if you hit a firm spot, or stopped and backed up when you hit a soft spot. Both the layout and the greens are well above average. Customer service very good, quick efficient check in but no on course services. Basic carts do not have GPS, and the course is not well marked for yardages if you do not have a measuring device of some kind. Challenging course in nice condition overall. Definitely recommended.

Quick update: Air quality is decent and almost back to normal. The fire in the area is 100% contained. sky was mostly blue and clear Course remains in excellent shape. They were putting a lot of water on the course yesterday so the greens early on were a bit soggy and slower than normal. They sped up to their normal fast pace by the end of the round.

Course remains in solid condition tee to green. Greens are always nice at Hunter Ranch and yesterday was no different. They rolled smooth at a medium-fast pace and were fairly pitch mark free. Fairways were great with only a few brown spots throughout the course tee boxes were good and sand traps were excellent.

Hunter Ranch always has been and still is a go to course in the area.

Fires 100 miles north have the whole area looking like it is fogged in the haze is so bad. Challenging course in nice condition. Tees were semi lush and most were well maintained for divots. Some could use leveling. Fairways lush, nice to play from. Rough was fairly lush close to the fairway. Mostly mowed down, not overly penal. Thinner the farther you got from the fairway. Sand traps had good quality sand. Very well maintained. Large, undulating greens were smooth, medium fast and firm. Held irons with some run out. Both the layout and the greens are outstanding. Customer service was very good. Basic carts do not have GPS, and the course is not well marked for yardages if you do not have a measuring device of some kind. Definitely recommended.

We let 2 groups play through, then caught a younger 4some on golf boards. They got their $$$ worth on the golf boards, looked like snowboarders going down the fairways. And rough. And through the oaks. Sunny, windy and in the 80's made for challenging golfing conditions. Other than no rakes in the sand, almost no other obvious COVID-19 measures. Cups were normal depth, they provided divot mix and the bathrooms/water stations on the course were operational. Tees were semi lush and most were well maintained for divots. Some could use leveling. Fairways mostly lush with a good pad underneath. Both are beginning to show brown spots from the heat. Rough was fairly lush close to the fairway. Mostly mowed down, not overly penal. Thinner the farther you got from the fairway. Sand traps had good quality sand and were very well maintained. Large, undulating greens rolled nice! Smooth, medium fast and firm, they held irons with some run out. Customer service was very good. Went out and played Hunter Ranch mid morning with a couple of friends. Course remains in overall very nice condition. The greens were super smooth and rolling at a fast pace. Cups are also back down in the ground now instead of a couple inches above like they had been for a couple of months. Still no rakes in the bunkers which I somehow avoided all day. The sand traps did look nice though. I noticed one was smooth with only one set up footprints from someone earlier in the morning.

Fairways were showing some signs of browning up from the summer heat but other than aesthetics they didn’t present a problem at all to hit from. Tee boxes had good coverage but a few were a little lumpy. Hunter Ranch saw A LOT of play during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and even with all the play the course is still in great shape.

We were behind a twosome early but once they let us through we sailed on without a hitch the rest of the day finishing in just under 3 hours.

Restaurant was open for takeout and outside dining. I believe she said they are expected to get the clearance for inside dining this weekend.
