I love Fall golf. Yes we are in the peak Fall maintenance month with aerated greens and overseeding going on but if you plan it right you can find some fantastic conditions out there.

I've got my hands full with some personal and GK priorities that's going to limit my play this month but I'll definitely still be getting some golf in.

Looking forward to reading your posts!

So close! I had it in my hands and let it slip away ... but I'm actually not too upset. There I was, confidently ready to tee off at Rustic Canyon on the 16th tee and was sitting pretty at just 6 over for the whole round (41 on the front, to that point 1 over on the back).

What happened next I'll never understand, but topped the drive for the first time all day into the muck, re-teed, went left side of the fairway, then pulled my long hybrid left and gone for a second penalty, then flew the green from 165 out, impossible pitch and three-putt for a 10. A 10! Recovered a bit on 17 but then choked again on 18 for a triple and just like that my shot at breaking 80 for just the second time (and this one on a 'real' course like Rustic) was gone.

I ended up going the final three holes 10 over which left me with an 88 for the day, adjusted to 85 for SCGA handicap. Still pretty happy of course to have come that close, but ultimately so frustrating to do something so dumb when it was all flowing so nicely. Thanks for letting me vent.

Pretty nice little milestone reached at Encino today as I played my first full 18 without a single hole worse than bogey. Two birdies, five pars and 11 bogeys - not good enough to break 80 again, but a nice 81 and probably the most consistent round I've played ever. It's not a tough course by any means, but did play the full 6900 yards from the black tees so it was still a challenge to not compound any mistakes - followed up each of those with either a good shot or a smart decision. Pretty happy.

Got out to Oak Quarry to take advantage of the rare under par deal. Wind was gusting between 60 and 70. Flashbacks to Windyrock! No trees crashing down and no windshield ripped of the cart but made a tough course even tougher. We drove an hour and a half and were meeting friends that drove just as far so we did so decided to brave it. Considering the conditions I was pleased to go 44-50. Greens were rolling better than I have ever seen but the wind really affected those as well. Downhill putt into the wind and would stop the ball. Uphill behind and watch it run. The hardest was the three and four footers. Had to guess whether to go hard at the hole or hope the wind would push it in. Looks like they are preparing for over seeding. Lots of brown spots and the tee boxes were more dirt than grass but flat and smooth. Highlight of the day was on #4. After starting 5-5-5 got to 4 with the wind behind. I usually go for the 180 shot off the tee into the left fairway and go from there. Today went with driver. Caught it nice and ended up about 30 yards from the green right in front. It was one of the brown ares and I had already had trouble chipping from it so decided (stupidly) to try putting with a hybrid to get it on. Put it about 50 feet past the hole. It was downhill with a couple slight breaks both ways so went straight at the hole trying to get it close and get my par. Watched it roll and roll and a little left a little right and in the hole for a birdie. Had a few pars but into the wind I could only hit about about 150 off the tee and this was a 3 club wind into it and you had to be careful on approach shots with the wind behind. Always fun to play there and had a great time with Donna and Willie. Was amazed how beat and tired we were after.

Why the long layoff, Matt (if you don't mind me asking)?

I hurt my wrist back in august after hitting a root at Apple Mountain Golf Club and was playing through the pain and then decided to take 2 weeks off which turned into 4 weeks due to being busy and broke

Gotcha. Sometimes those layoffs prove to be a good chance to recharge the batteries - happened to me when I ruptured my calf again a few years back. You'll be back to your old (and maybe even) better self in no time.
