If you compare Lydia Ko's Stats from 2014-2016 to her from 2017-2019, it does not look like the same player.

"Are Lydia Ko's Best Days Behind Her?"

In a word: Yes...

Her early success seemed to take everyone by surprise...I believe Minjee Lee was the more highly-regarded amateur at the time...and 'The Next Annika' narrative took off like wildfire. Far from being an exciting player, she was a model of efficient ball-striking.

Then things began to change; left her long-time coach for Leadbetter...becoming the main pawn for his 'A-Swing' philosophy...eventually decided to part ways with him, jumped on the Gary Gilchrist Express, switched equipment from Callaway to PXG, ended the Gilchrist affiliation and began working with ex-PGA Tour journeyman Ted Oh until, true to form, she proceeded to kick him to the curb just a few weeks back.

Also in the mix: the strong outside control being exerted by her Mom...along with the constant revolving door of caddies. Once she hit it big, what initially was a simple golf swing and uncluttered life morphed into a complicated mess.

And while she's given no clear-cut indications to the contrary, I wonder if golf is still fun for her. Burnout always seems to find its' way into the conversation in instances such as Ko's but it may be too easy to hang that label on her. Still, given the way things have transpired over the past few years, it definitely looks like golf has become more of a grind.

Ko's game was never about overpowering a golf course; it was based upon precision, consistent repetition, and a deft short game. While there may be certain courses that suit her style of play, other than the occasional 'flashback', I don't see her ever becoming a 'week-in/week-out' threat again.

As for the LPGA Tour as a whole, the days of Annika-type domination have faded out of sight. Unless someone is totally dedicated to and focused upon attaining such a lofty position...and willing to make the necessary sacrifices in order to maintain that perch...we may only see a few short-term 'runs' by a handful of players but that list most assuredly will not include Ko.

As observer from afar, it appears her mother has been somewhat detrimental to her career. Her mother has had a hand in dismissing all of her coaches and caddies, it seems. It's unfortunate, but who knows whether or not she (Ko's mother)has dismissed either of those caddies or coaches who may have had a positive impact on her swing mechanics or oncourse play based on whether she (the mom) likes them personally or not.
