Played Los Amigos in Downey today for the first time. In the foursome we had three GPS, two Garmin, one IZZO, and two rangefinders, one Bushnell and my Leupold.

This was my second round ever using a laser rangefinder and it was eye opening. Prior to my round I had watched several YouTube video's on course management using a laser rangefinder. For about 25% of the shots, my GPS was more than sufficient, however on this course that features fairway bunkers, deep green side bunkers, clusters of mature trees, dog legs, and creeks for defense and to shape play, knowing the exact distance to trouble significantly altered how I played the course. This ended up being one of the rare times when I used every club in my bag. I don't normally carry four woods, after wishing I had had my 7 wood when playing Black Gold, I made sure I had all four in the bag. I carried the full 14 club compliment today and used them all to great effect. Knowing the distance of potential trouble, and thinking through the shot more than I would with just the range to the pin from my GPS was not only helpful, but really enjoyable.

I was hoping adding a rangefinder to my toolkit would make a difference, and it already has. I looked at the course so much differently than I would have in the past, because I wasn't guessing, I felt I knew what I could do with my clubs, and could plan my shots, pick my target so much more effectively.

Laser rangefinders are useful. Last weekend in a tournament, one of the guys in the group in front of us heaved a club off the green and into the water hazard. Next par three, while we were waiting, I scoped it. The others in the group looked at me expectantly and I was able to confirm that yes, the guy in the group in front of us was using a wedge to putt. His putter was sleeping with the fishes. And the flag was 127 yards away.

LOL! I just saw The Godfather last week on the big screen in Valencia. It was the first time I watched it from start to finish.

Sorry. Yeah, I got a range finder for Christmas last year and while it doesn't have all those bells and whistles I do get a lot of use from it. It is very nice to have as a course management tool. My old GPS (Voice Caddy) gave me distance to center of the green. Now I can get some carry distances and shoot target areas as well as the flag. I haven't brought my scores down though. I guess I'm not that good yet.

Hi. I recently picked up a Precision Pro Golf NX7 rangefinder for $250 and it works fine for me. Pretty simple, 6x magnification; more accurate than I am .
The adaptive slope technology can be turned on and off though, meaning this unit is still competition legal.
There are other similar brands in the same price range.

I still employ both the Swing by Swing GPS on every round, and my laser for the pins. Layups, obstacles - all those things I get a much better sense of accuracy from my GPS, but on the rare occasion I'll use the laser to get the distance to a tree or something. But mostly it stays in the bag or the cart until I can see the pin. If you got it, use it ...

I certainly still like using both. If I play a par 3 course I use the laser almost exclusively. Love the laser at the driving range. On longer courses I use it to distance hazards if I think they may be in range, otherwise the GPS is fine, and much faster since mine is on my wrist. The laser is fun however to hit a shot, go to my ball and lase back to the place I played the ball from. (Usually the tee).

The key to using your rangefinder is knowing what you can do with a club.

For me, I know what club will go 60 yards, 70 yards, 80 and 90 yards. Using the rangefinder just gives me added comfort.
