Johnny made this comment in his review of the La Costa GK Plays: "they are moving quick to purchase some specialized ball mark fixing machines "

I know nothing about this type of thing and would be interested to know more. "ball mark fixing machines" - is this basically a mower-type vehicle doing a shallow punch and roll-type repair? Or how does it work?

Obviously one way to address ballmarks is to get staff out on the course greens on a regular basis with divot tools, but this is definitely labor-intensive.

And is there any good data on the effectiveness of information campaigns to golfers to fix their own marks?

Wow, a great topic for an actual greenskeeper to chime in on!

I'd definitely love to see how that machine would work. Seems like you'd definitely need to have some really pock-marked greens to make it worth the investment. On the other hand, paying people to do that would cost WAY more over time.

I can't recall if I've ever played a round of golf where the Starter (or anyone) asked us to fix ball marks or even asked if we'd like to know what they are and how to fix them (I think a lot of golfers don't know this ettiquette).

Anyway, seems like a little education and a two-cent plastic divot tool would work wonders...

It has been awhile but I went to Oak Quarry one time and they asked you at the desk when you were checking in, if you needed a ball mark repair tool to fix ball marks and would give you a nice plastic one if not and asked you to be so kind to fix yours and one more during your round.

Just a guess on my part, but I have a feeling the apparatus in question is a hand-held device that isn't as labor-intensive as a plain old divot tool. Probably similar in operation to a gopher pellet dispenser that one might use on their lawn, you simply place the device over the ball mark, pull the trigger, and it restores the divot depression caused by the ball mark to its' original turf-level state.

As an aside, when I was a member of the Men's Club at Steele Canyon in the early 90s, everyone was assigned a particular hole where they were asked to repair as many ball marks as possible when playing the course. This program went a long way towards preserving and maintaining the condition and playability of the greens without having to rely solely on the head greenskeeper and his staff. Sure would be nice if more courses adopted this approach but it still doesn't excuse those ignorant souls who continue to contribute to an ever-growing issue.

I'd put a sign on the first tee that says, in multiple languages, PLEASE FIX BALL MARKS, and have a divot repair dispenser next to the sign with free plastic tools.

At least it's NAFTA approved with a few more thrown in for good measure.

maybe we should treat these golfers like puppies. When we see them not fix a mark, drag them over stick their nose in the mark and give them a good slap.

In Mars: "%&!$. So that sounds like: "meh kloopt kdaekh mukkj em." to humanoids.

Include that in with your list and it's a complete list of useful reminder to fix their divots.

A few times at Westridge I've seen a worker going 'round with a hand held device fixing ball marks. It's spring loaded and on a long stick so no bending over is required. He just puts it on the ball mark, presses down a few times, and voila! No more mark.
