Underpar just advertised a $120 unlimited golf for two for Shadowridge through May. I would be surprised I& Classic Club was not in that range then.

If you're going to stay in a hotel and play golf, and the la quinta summer golf package is available when you're planning to go, that's a tough one to beat. It allows you to play any four of their courses (Mountain, Nicklaus, Norman or Dunes) for around $150, starting the afternoon of the day you arrive. The golf is unlimited, or has been in the past. Usually for $50 more you can play PGA West Stadium. The rooms are very nice with plenty of places to eat in the area. Early May might be a little early for the package to kick in, but give it a look.

Not sure when each course lowers their rates. However, early May will be the period when some of the currently expensive courses will begin to become more affordable.

I would start with these public courses, in this order and see what is the best deal you can get at that time. All of these would wow the average out of towner:

Classic Club
PGA West Stadium
SilverRock
PGA West Nicklaus
DW Firecliff
Marriott Shadow Ridge
IW Celebrity
IW Players
La Quinta (Mountain)

Really good courses but not as good as the top tier:

Eagle Falls
DW Mountain View
PGA West Norman
La Quinta (Dunes)
Westin Player
Westin Dye

Some of these may still be higher than the $60-$80 range in early May, but you should easily be able to find enough that are in that range to point your buddies in the right direction.

This group is the more affordable public options that should definitely be in your price range. Not as well known, a step below the top tier, but above average courses. More bang for the $$$ spent courses IMO:

Escena
Desert Falls
Indian Canyons South
Shadow Hills South
Mountain Vista Santa Rosa
Mountain Vista San Gorgonio
Indian Springs

There are several excellent deals on Underpar that you can purchase well in advance that include replay if you are interested in playing more than 18 in a day. The price per round is very worthwhile.

The goal is long and straight! But on the many times I cannot seem to hit them straight, I at least want to hit them long!

Underpar just came out with a few Palm Springs/ Palm Desert courses and I'm sure there will be more.

Available right now decent courses that is within the budget :

Westin Mission hills (Dye and Player)
Shadow Ridge
Mountain Vista

As mentioned by 140, the La quinta deal would be excellent if it does come out.

Good luck and have fun!
