Spent the day mopping up a couple of smaller courses on my never played list. One was Lake Forest - 9 holes - two par 4's. The first par 4 was only around 200 yards to the pin kind of over water but I couldn't help but notice the green was wider than the fairway - so the choice was easy. Hit a good shot to 7 feet and made the putt for a 2. Technically an Eagle but is it really? I'm not sure it would have been the longest or hardest par 3 I played that day if it had been labeled as much.

Thoughts?

Nice birdie. ;-)

Interesting topic, and the subject of 'effective playing length' is of note.

Why not? The PGA had one of the par 4's on Saturday, I believe set up at 270 at the players and that is an iron for most.

Good article on the guidelines for par ratings. Whereas 250 yards is a long par 3 in my book, I have to say 200 for a par 4 is awful short. For me if I can get there in less than driver, it's a Par 3.

The Balboa Park 9-hole course in San Diego has back to back par 4's that measure less than 250 yards and are usually golden eagle opportunities. I don't count them, but if they are on the scorecard as par 4 holes, by all means do!

Executive courses are NOT designed for the PGA Tour. Executive courses are perfect for juniors, seniors, novices, players coming off an injury/layoff or just for a change of pace. Quick, short alternatives to regulation courses, confidence builders.

I was recently invited to play at a nice, private executive course. The course was packed, almost exclusively by players age 65+. Many were golfers who had played for years, some of whom used to be single digit handicappers back in their day. But when you can now only hit a driver 150 yards, there is a place for par 4's that most golfers would consider too short. A certain percentage of recreational golfers do not want to play courses with 420+ yard par 4's because it would routinely take them 3-4 GOOD shots to get there. Shorter courses are perfect for them.

If the layout/course conditions are decent, executive courses can be a fun round for almost any golfer.

If that course plays it as a par 4, it's a par 4. But whatever it is, still a nice 2 Perry!

The goal is long and straight! But on the many times I cannot seem to hit them straight, I at least want to hit them long!

When you enter the score, it's officially an eagle. The Scoretracker here or your scorecard at the course does not discriminate based on the length of the hole. If they want it to be a par 3, they'll make it a par 3. But they didn't. They say it's a par 4. You were in the cup in two. It's an eagle. I wouldn't save the ball or anything or post a picture of the moment on Facebook, but an eagle's an eagle! Nice work!

Eagle is an eagle. Par 4 on the card make 2 = smile you just made Eagle!

Would you say it's not an ace because the hole was only playing 99 yards?

Congrats and continued success.

Well, since I have PLEANTY of room in my 15 slot golf ball display case (where I keep all my Eagles) I did save the ball. I will be super happy if one day I can kick it out of a slot but that's probably not going to happen.

But I didn't post it on Facebook - I'm not an animal.....
