I spoke to someone in the pro shop yesterday at RR. He told me the golf course is closed until September 15. They are remodeling the course. He said it will become more of a desert type course. Many of the dead/burned out grass sections in the fairways will become waste areas, like you see at many desert courses. Obviously, they're trying to get the most out of this course given the severe water shortage they have. It will be interesting to see what it looks and plays like once the renovation is done.

They did a similar thing at Rancho Vista in Palmdale (also originally designed by Ted Robinson I believe) and that course is very playable as a desert course. I look forward to playing Robinson Ranch again.

Hopefully the waste will keep balls in play as opposed to the runoffs into the crap that they had for the past three years. Unless you hit it on a string down the dead center, the odds of your ball bounding into the crap was 80/20.

September 15? Of this year? That doesn't seem like a lot of time to revamp two 18s in this fashion, or am I totally off base?

QUOTED  Hopefully the waste will keep balls in play as opposed to the runoffs into the crap that they had for the past three years. Unless you hit it on a string down the dead center, the odds of your ball bounding into the crap was 80/20.

Vito is absolutely correct, there has to be something to stop good shots from rolling into red hazards. The course was marginally unplayable, especially in the wind some of my winter and early spring rounds there when both the fairways and rough were thin/hardpan.

If all they are doing is digging up what used to be turf that has been hardpan for the last few golf seasons and designating it as "waste area", then this will not assist the courses play ability.

QUOTED  September 15? Of this year? That doesn't seem like a lot of time to revamp two 18s in this fashion, or am I totally off base?

Perhaps the 9/15 date applies to just the Valley Course reopening?

Sounds like the Mountain Course is going to remain closed indefinitely? If that is the case, it is probably the best use of their water and maintenance budget. Because as it was last golf season, they had 36 holes that were both below to well below average maintenance wise and probably only enough rounds played between the 2 courses to adequately support one busy 18 hole layout. May as well try and save the Valley since it was the better of the 2 18's...

The goal is long and straight! But on the many times I cannot seem to hit them straight, I at least want to hit them long!

There is only one functioning course at RR, the Valley course. The Mountain course has been closed for a few months. It is not re-opening.

Rancho Vista had wall-to-wall turf to start with. After cutting in the waste areas, they still had 50 yard wide landing areas of fairway and rough. You will not get that much room at RR.

That is not surprising. 9/15 was VERY ambitious. Hopefully, it WILL re-open.
