Here we go---first off, great trip. Second, I know "Central Coast" is a reach description for Rancho San Marcos (RSM) and LaPurisima (LP) but for me personally SB to Hunter is Central Coast.

So we left Monday morning 11/6 for RSM-- wary of the weather forecasts we had been following carefully. Not to worry, weather for all 3 days xlnt. Rolled up to RSM about 10 ish (wary of a few dire descriptions of the place--was expecting baked out dirt fairways) and the place looked great. Nirvana--home, good guys working there--very friendly and cool. They offer the Cal. Resident discount with free replay policy. Greens were unreal and the rest of the place was very playable--thin in spots but not bad at all. Sand really good. Wild Turkey and large ass geese galore. Pace of play was sublime. We loved the place and left happy and smiling.

Stayed at Chumash Indian Casino for two nights -- great rates and high quality digs. Those people kill it with their slot machines, busing in gamblers from all over the place. Kinda depressing watching folks feed those machines. Very serious folks -- saw 0 smiling faces (as compared to the Morongo commercials featuring all those merry winners and dancing girls--far from it at Chumash).

Dinner at The Hitching Post in Buellton (of "Sideways" fame) --- a must stop.

Next morning out at LP to face it's fangs. The course brought us to our heels. Great challenge, altho the greens had been recently sanded (GK showed green for maintenance alerts and I did not ask LP about sanding--so mia culpa). Tho sanded, greens not bad but a come down from RSM. They should be back to great soon.

BTW, played LP with the Golf Moose special -- xlnt effing deal. The LP guy on the phone said replay rate would be $30 for 18 and $15 for 9 -- but the gal at the desk sed the guy was wrong and that it was a flat 30--- she relented when I explained what her colleague told me. But, we decided instead to go check out Mission Club where we had a time for the next day. We were on the fence between going back to RSM or playing MC the last day.

Had lunch at MC and they graciously offered us carts to tour the course---very nice people there and an immaculately groomed course with it's own country club, house-lined character (with minimal green bunkering). So, we decided to cancel out MC and replay RSM for the last leg since RSM was on the way back home, muy bueno and closer to what we were looking for in a "get-away."

Rolled into RSM yesterday (Wednesday morning) about 8 a.m., only to see the club house front door/window smashed to smitherines and employees waiting to greet golfers outside. Thieves had broken in the early morn (when thieves are at "work") and snatched 48 Scotty Cameron putters valued at $300 each --- all they took were the putters. They used bolt cutters to break the chain blocking the entry way to the course and then threw a rock to break the glass door = pros.

Feel d%mn sorry for those people cuz it's just a really great spot -- they've had to deal with fires, drought and now this -- plus I like the friendly people there. They'll recover.

Back to golf on the second go around at RSM---greens just a hair slower but still terrific. Picked up a bit of wind later on but still fine. Played 27 holes and headed home. We were unanimous that playing RSM again was the right move (but, at some point, we'll give MC a try -- especially if there's deals to be had).

Pretty cool recap--I get the $59.00 all day play e-mails for RSM--I have been hesitant to give it a go thinking the fairways might be too dry--sounds like they are playable based on your review and worth that pricetag.
