Met up with ABBACAT yesterday and played the Stonehouse/Oaks combo at Temecula Creek on a picture-perfect day. Mid-to-low 70s temperature-wise but the steady 15-20 MPH wind…which, for the majority of the round, was against us…made for quite a challenge.

Overall, conditions were good although I felt there were a few rough spots along the edges on Stonehouse. Random bare spots here and there, some damp, muddy areas that needed attention, and a general appearance that made things look as if they were in some sort of transitionary stage.

Tee boxes could use some leveling, a few greens still showed aeration holes (#3 in particular), and the greenside trap on #4 was crusty and looked like it hadn’t been attended to in quite some time. I felt I was walking onto a sheet of ice when I entered to play my shot. Was able to navigate the 50-footer successfully…stuck it to four feet to save par…but there was a lot of guesswork involved. Although the bunker on #8 Oaks was better…firm but more playable…I feel the entire collection is in need of some work.

Greens throughout the course were soft…you immediately felt it under your feet…which led to approach shots holding nicely. Speed was definitely on the slow side, similar to the practice green, and putts took some sharp turns once they began to lose pace. Would like to see things firmed up a bit, which would lead to truer rolls.

With that being said, the ball mark damage was fairly minimal yet we still fixed quite a few fresh unattended marks during the round. Fringe areas were in good shape and the rough was healthy and thick. Took a bit of speed when it came to hitting short pitch shots but the receptive greens made it possible to get the ball to settle without a ridiculous amount of rollout.

Pace of play was very satisfying, although as a twosome sandwiched between a couple of fours, we did have a few delays to contend with. Nothing of consequence, however: teed off @ 2:00PM, played at a relaxed pace, and wrapped it up 4 hours and 15 minutes later.

Followed up the round with dinner at the course, which put a proper finishing touch on what turned out to be an enjoyable day.

Considering the steep fees many courses now charge on weekends, Temecula Creek’s late rate of $78.00…with a cart…cannot be overlooked. As far as I’m concerned, you definitely get your money’s worth here.

Despite the minor ‘imperfections’, the course is highly recommended. Hopefully things will get tidied up as the summer approaches but they’re really not far off. The personable staff also deserves mention as they provide a warm and welcoming vibe.

Mid morning Oaks/Creek nines 4.5 hour round on a very windy day. The staff and pro shop are really nice. The practice facilities are adequate and well maintained. The tee boxes were all in good level shape with the exception of the par three holes. The second hole on the Creek was almost solid unfilled divots. The rough was cut down to a nice length but advancing from it was difficult and penal. The fairways are in excellent condition with total green grass coverage from side to side and great lies. The roll on some of the fairways was limited by the amount of watering. The bunkers were all full of decent sand but many needed a good raking and some were damp. The greens were all great with hardly any ball marks. They held shots well and consistently rolled true but were a little slower than usual. The course allows walkers and these two nines are great for that. Nice access to the freeway is also a plus.

I 80 and large driving range and practice areas. Restaurant is bigger as well. Also course is pretty much flat (easy to walk) and w/o the elevation changes at RS that might bother many golfers.

I found all tee boxes to be clean, level and playable.

Fairways good coverage, good lies, rollout
on all of them.

Rough was manageable. But there is a creek running through the course and lots of OB areas. Houses along some holes but set back sufficiently.

Traps were all raked and cleaned ready for play.

Greens are large but not as large as RS but they have undulations and hitting the right spot for were the pin is is crucial. They chipped and putted great the whole round. With decent speed maybe 9/10.

Great customer service from all employees I encountered.

I love the variety of courses available within about a 30 mile radius here in N CA. And no traffic jams to deal with getting to them. Go further out and even more courses become available.

Going to head N this summer and play as many Sierra courses as possible as the traveling distances are really within range.

Late afternoon tee time this past Friday at Rio Hondo and just can't talk about anything else up front over the POP disaster. I was shocked to look at my phone and see a 3+ hour front nine before grabbing a dog at the turn.

Fortunately the layout on the back nine works a little better in that regard so we finished at right under six hours. Awful. Painful. Aggravating. Is it time to consider some kind of layout change to avoid these messes? Stagger tee times more? I'm not sure, but it's not sustainable.

Okay, rant over. Course conditions are pretty good and the greens are fully recovered from the latest punch. They were rolling nicely and with consistent speeds, but too many people still not fixing their ball marks. How is this still an issue in 2026? Surely all the new Covid golfers have now gotten to the point where they understand this, right?

Fairways were a little thin and dried out but playable, while the rough was in good shape. Bunkers had enough sand in them to be functional, not enough to be enjoyable. Tee boxes were a hodge-podge of good and bad coverage, but they were all level and workable.

But for the love of God - please fix the POP issue.

Course is in very nice shoulder season condition. Played many rounds on Mountain recently with the Canyon greens the last to be punched. Greens back to medium fast and smooth. Firm again. Almost borderline unreasonably fast going downhill. So course management is a must. You just can not get above certain pins or 3, even 4 putts is likely. Had my first one of the season recently, gotta love those 5's on par 3's where you had a long birdie putt to start with. Bermuda lush on the tee's/fairways. Rough patchy hit/mniss, mowed low. Mowed low around the greens, you can definitely use putter from well off many greenw currently. Which when going over large mounds to a firm, quick green is frequently a safer play IMO. Nice range, carts, GPS. Good restaurant onsite. Highly recommended.
