Played yesterday in very windy conditions. Made for a fun and long round. Course was in great condition. Tee boxes perfect. Fairways lush and good lies and roll. Bunkers deep but nice sand and well conditioned. Very little rough but it's Bermuda so can be tough. Large undulating greens. Thank goodness they had good pin placements. Terrific customer service from everyone. Highly recommended when in Maui.

Played 12/04/2018. I think the blue might have been in better shape, but not by much. we had a great time and the staff was great. Maybe a little harder and pricey course then to blue, but fun.

Epic trip to Hawaii for my buddy's wedding and we played Wailea Gold on 10/30 at 12:15pm. Check-in was easy and we teed off on #10 after a short warm up. Every tee box was perfect, the rough was consistent and lush, and the two traps I hit were in great shape. Even before it started sprinkling on #16, the greens were quite slow. They looked great, and appeared to be in great shape....just slow. This course is more of a shotmakers course, allowing for more freedom off the tee compared to the Emerald Course. Great views of the ocean on many holes.

A few words come to mind when you get the chance to play the Wailea Gold (and Emerald) course. Spectacular. Breathtaking. Exhilarating. Awe-inspiring. The views and and 'How the heck did I get so lucky to be here?' moments in between swings come fast and hard.

I can honestly say that I've played courses with faster, cleaner greens, or fluffier sand, but none to match the jaw-dropping sights and sounds that accompany any round here. It's a unique experience that must be experienced to be believed.

I purchased a 3-day package at around $465 that allowed for unlimited golf between the Gold and Emerald courses. There is also Wailea Blue, which is considered the lesser of the three courses, but it was not a part of the package, and according to those I played with who had played there this week, I didn't miss anything as they had recently aerated anyway.

I'll limit this review to the Gold course and do another for the Emerald later - but don't be fooled - they're both equally gorgeous - the Gold is a bit longer and more wide open, while the Emerald is shorter and tighter, and I found it to be a lot easier to get into trouble.

As for the Gold course conditions, pretty darn wonderful, but not without its slight imperfections. Not sure what the timing was but the greens were certainly on the slow and thick side, but they held shots very well and were well taken care of across the board. They also feature a bent grass which apparently always breaks towards the ocean, but I never got that far with my understanding of them and putted well despite that fact.

The fairways were very beautiful with the occasional strange track running across them, but honestly can't complain about that gorgeous carpet. The ground underneath though is incredibly soft so if you're used to a little SoCal bounce, you won't get that here. It was so common to chunk shots and get a bit frustrated, but my fault, not the fairways.

The rough was pretty thick and penal, but of course very well covered and there wasn't a dry spot on the course. The tee boxes? Utter perfection. Each of the 4-5 tee boxes for each hole was perfectly level and exquisitely lush.

Sand traps one would expect to be superb, but in truth there was a lot of variation to them. Some were very nice, but of course with so much humidity and moisture in the air, they can often get heavy quite quickly and randomly. And there were even a few that had some type of gravel bits in them, so that was bizarre. Stay out of them, then it's no problem!

Layout is terrific and very challenging - bunkers to punish any inaccuracies, lava rocks to swallow anything wayward, and elevations and undulations to test every skill in your set. I honestly feel that the #7 hole par 5 at Wailea Gold is the most beautiful par 5 I've ever played in my life.

Service excellent from start to finish. Cart girl came around at least 3-4 times per round, but they really should get her a Square or some type of credit card machine as it's pretty archaic to still be using carbon paper copies! But the guys take excellent care of your gear, provide a wonderfully cold towel at the end of the round, and are helpful in every way possible.

Great GPS system in the carts as well - touch screen to determine layups and aerial overviews of each hole - comes in handy the first time around for sure with some of those crazy doglegs and hills.

There were not enough pictures on GK to do both the courses justice, so I made sure to take an extra battery pack and get the whole course covered. Enjoy! It was a truly epic experience and I hope to one day get out there again to feel the majesty. I'm a lucky guy.

Check in was easy and staff was phenomenal. Pro shop was well stocked (got an awesome bucket hat and a nice footjoy logo shirt).

Starter and crew were super helpful. Got me on a range cart quickly and loaded up my stuff in regular cart while i hit the range.

Range was mats, unfortunately, but was good enough to warm up on. Also, unfortunately, i learned at the range that the callaway xr set does not agree with me. Not a huge issue though.

As for course, it was one of the very best i have ever played. Everything was immaculate. The views were amazing and i got some great pictures.

Tee boxes were all perfect. Not many divots and were perfectly level.

Fairways were great. Rough was cut decently well; not too long and not too short.

Sand was pretty much the same as i had on the beach this morning (in Makena).

Greens were fast and true, despite somewhat recent sanding.

When the dropped off my cart, i was met with a cold towel to cool down with.

Cart girl was around a few times. Seemed to be there just when i was finishing up my beer!

All in all, i feel lucky to have played the gold. It was an amazing experience. Pricy, yes, but absolutely worth it for a vacation round.

Played 12/24/13 at 10AM. We started on the back 9 which played much longer than the front 9. Warmed up at the range which holds about 25 stations and putted from 2 levels of practice green. Main challenge was wet grass not rolling out so long par 4's played like par 5 for me. Back 9 design was little bland. Front 9 was little more interesting with more elevation changes and distinct designs. There were few holes with ocean view which I enjoyed and it was nice course so I'm glad I got to play it but I would much rather play the better conditioned and better designed Emerald course any given day. BTW, this course is longer than the Emerald course by 200 yds for same colored tee to Emerald.
Tee boxes were lush with very little usage so it was almost near perfect. Fairways were nice but not as nice as Emerald Course. Roughs were in good shape. Putting greens were mostly smooth with little bumps from spike marks. Overall, this is very nice course and I would recommend it but if you only have 1 round to play here, then I would choose the Emerald course.

Good practice range and chipping area, and large putting green. Starters are very clear about when you should head to the tee and always another marshall at the first tee to get you going.

Fairways are firm and fast, very playable. Still a nice bermuda grass cushion under the ball when in the fairway. Very interesting layout througout the front nine, with lava rocks cutting through fairways and around greens.

Greens were good, but not great. I noticed a little damage on a few holes, and a few others had sand repairs, sometimes very near the pin placement. Very helpful to know how to read the grain as I think it's the most influential element of these greens. Find the rough spot around the cup to judge which way the grain is going.

Bunkers I visited were excellent, and there are many on this course.

I much prefer the front nine to the back. Better views and more interesting holes on the front, although a gorgeous finishing hole. Dogleg right to left, downhill that opens up to a magnificent view of the Pacific.

Good, solid, professional service, excellent restuarant and bar (Gannon's) and always one of my favorites in Maui. Enjoy!

Wailea Gold is the crown Jewel of the Wailea complex. To start customer service is exactly what you would expect from a top notch facility. Add in Hawaiian hospitality and you couldn't ask for more. Course is very fair and if you play the wrong tee boxes you can be in for a long day. Remember this is a resort course. Not everyone out there is on tour. That said they were aerating the Emerald course on August 7th so everyone was on The Gold. It was a slow day. There is not one bad thing to say about the course or facilty with the exception of the bunkers they just weren't up to the same quality as the rest of the course. Not that they were bad just not as good as the rest. They had a great parent junior rate of $199 for both so it worked for me. Come out enjoy the course.
