On a trip up through No. Calif, we stopped at Links of Rolling Hills. Was checking weather.com as it had been raining but was supposed to stop around 10:30 so we got a tee time at 11:20. Well they were a bit off on the weather as we ended up teeing off in light rain and cold wind. It finally cleared up around the 6th hole and was beautiful on the back 9. Paid the rack rate of $50 and as a 2 some, we finished in just under 4.5 hours. Really slowed down on #8 as we came to a complete halt. We waited over 15 minutes on the tee. The group behind us got very impatient and encouraged us to join the 2 some ahead of us. I said no as that wasn’t the reason why it got slow so I guess that ticked them off and they decided to call the clubhouse to complain. Hey chill out! Their complaint resonated throughout the course as many of the course staff became aware. Course staff came out to move things along and talked to us on the course. Great staff work but was unnecessary. The back 9 moved just fine and the group behind us fell way back. Great playing back there guys!! Ok enough

The course is in good shape. Fairways are recovering from the winter but still great lies in the fairways. The rough was thick but playable as I don’t think they were able to cut it with the rain that has come through. You cannot be wide here with your drive. Very thick native areas border all of the fairways and balls that go in there are lost. Bunkers were in good shape. Despite the rain, they played well.

The greens were in great condition and rolled very true despite the rain.

I really like playing here. It’s a beast and easy to lose balls but is still fun to play. Not a typical course with numerous trees. To the contrary, no trees but rolling fairways. I played well on this day but only because I didn’t go in the native areas. FYI, they also have a nice casino and we stopped in to have a few beers and drop a few at the tables. Look forward to coming back. Definitely recommend!!

Up in No. Calif. to play in a tournament but stopped to play a couple of courses on the way. First stop is the Links at Rolling Hills. I see I was the last one to review this course almost 2 years ago? Had a 11:00 tee time with an old friend and was joined by a very nice guy from Seattle. Pace of play was about 4.5 hours but seemed much slower. We waited on many holes and come to find out, three groups ahead of us was a family playing pretty slow but they also had their dogs out there. Really??

The last time I played here, we were told it can get very windy but at that time it was not windy and just very warm. This day however it was a very different story. Very comfortable weather but at least 20-25 mph winds. Really made a difference. Despite it all, this course is in very nice condition. I saw a previous review from sixpez who described it as a beast. Well described! It is!!

Fairways are in nice condition. Lots of roll out. Tee boxes in good condition as well. Bunkers were hard, mainly damp. The rough was thick but playable . The greens were in great shape. Hard but still holding good shots. Tricky though with many breaks/undulations.

This is a links course. No trees and totally exposed to the elements. Fairways are generous but missing a fairway, could mean you end up in native areas which is thick so bring some extra balls. Not a lot of flat lies out there because of the hilly terrain but I think it is a fun course. I enjoyed playing here and want to give it a go again next time up. Nice folks in the clubhouse and there is a casino next door with a nice lodge. Definitely recommend.

Got out on a Saturday 9/9 for a 10:00 tee time and it was not crowded at all which was a bit surprising. We got there early, was greeted by a very friendly starter and we went right to the tee. Pace of play was just over 3 1/2 hours and we never caught up with anyone out there. A twosome finally caught up with us on hole 15 so it seemed we had the course to ourselves. We paid $45 with cart and with a nice GPS.

The course is definitely a links course. Many blind shots and it’s a bit scary to hit the shot not knowing the course. Native areas line the course and if you go in there, your ball is lost. Hard to find in the tall, dry grass and bushes. It is in very good condition however. Fairways are very nice. Some thin areas but not bad. The rough is thick. Don’t want to go in there. I am thinking it is thick so as to catch the ball to keep it from rolling into the native areas. The greens rolled well and were holding. Tee boxes were uneven. It felt like you were standing on a pitcher’s mound.

The course is challenging. You can play it from about 6,200 up to 7,800 yards. 18 is a tough finishing hole playing nearly 600 yards up hill and into the wind if its blowing. We caught the course on a day with no wind and am told the wind can really blow out there as it is pretty much unprotected by trees. In fact, there are no trees out there at all. The heat can get you though. It was over 90 degrees when we played and when we finished, we were tired.

I had fun though and am definitely coming back. A couple of friends of mine who live up near here say they’ve heard rumors about it closing. Don’t know anything about this or their sources but I hope it isn’t true.

Took 89 year old father out on olive tees early to beat the heat Wednesday. Everyone friendly, conditions very nice with only light breeze and unrushed 3&1/2 hour round. Greens smooth just a bit slower than anticipated but no complaints. $35 at 8:00 start a steal for water bottles, immaculate conditioning, new gps cart and excellent warmup facilities. Dad enjoyed the round shooting one under his age! One of the best courses in the northerly state highly recommend.

Played 11/5/14 10 am POP 3.5 hrs. $40 Course is in very good shape. Faiways were cut tight but played great with good roll Greens were in very good shape. Very receptive and rolled well at medium speed. Traps and Tees in fine to great shape. Very challenging layout without knowing the layout and where NOT to hit!!! Personal opinion. Not a fan of the super heavy rough right along the edges of very narrow, sloping fairways. By the end of the day we were very frustrated getting penalized for good to great shots that would run from one side of the faiway all the way across and into the heavy rough. It didn't matter if you were 10" off or 10' off. We lost a few balls in the rough that barely missed the short grass because we simply couldn't find them in the thick rough.

We played on 4/5/2014 and played 36 holes. there was no one on the course during the second round which we played in 2 and a half hours! the weather was perfect as was the course the rate was $59.00 but is usually $69.00 which is a steal. awesome practice facility and friendly staff except for the starter who is a little too serious but that's his job i guess. this course is a serious test with demanding greens and accurate shotmaking is a must. do not play if it's windy (20+ mph) or you will get crushed. it will become one of your favorite courses.

Back again for a rematch. Can't believe I'm the last one to review the course on my visit a year ago. This really is a must-play if you are ever in the north part of the state along the I-5. Just bring some extra balls and plenty of humility. It's a beast. My brother and I had a 9:00 tee time, but they had a frost delay and didn't start play until 9:10. $40 with cart was a great deal, though. Our group ended up going off at 9:40. The pace was slow (4:40), but we were never pushed by anyone behind us. This course is not conducive to quick play because of the tricky design and lots of native grass areas that swallow up balls. Still, I had a blast getting my butt kicked yet again! The course was in better shape this year with less rain. Last year it was actually impressively playable after a massive rainstorm, but it was still really soggy. This year's dry winter presented Sevillano in its traditional winter look. It's very unusual because they don't overseed here. They keep bermuda fairways all year, so they are green in the summer and brown/dormant in the winter. However, the rough is a lush, beautiful rye/bluegrass. So it's the opposite of desert courses. Here, the golden fairways are framed by green grass, which is then framed again by the golden native grasses. It's a very unusual look, but kind of cool in its own way. Unfortunately, I found the rough much better to hit from than the thinner fairways. It partly depended on grain with the bermuda. With the grain, it's great to hit from. Against the grain and it really snags your club. The rough was cut shorter this year than last, so the ball sat up nicely. The tee boxes were excellent and so were the sand traps. Last but not least, the greens were excellent. Very fast, firm and slick like a links course should be. This layout is not for the faint of heart with a lot of semi-blind shots, natural undulation and weird angles. I think you have to play it many times to really know all the nuances. One of the guys we played with was a regular and he also said it changes a lot depending on wind and other weather factors, too, so it's one you can never really tame. This is really a unique experience. It may not be Bandon as far as throwback links courses go, but it's definitely worth a visit while in the area. I look forward to another rematch with it in the future.

Lucked out with a one-day break in the weather. Played out here this morning with a shotgun start for Christmas Eve. $45 a player, hard to beat for this caliber of course!

It was sunny out, with little wind, but it's been raining a lot here so the course was very soggy today. The fairways had recently been aerated and were very squishy and soggy, which makes this very long and challenging course even tougher. We played from the forward Challenge tees at 6215 yards, but it played more like 7000 in today's conditions. I can't imagine playing the John Daly tees, which are 7823 yards (rating/slope 78.0/140!!!). The first cut of rough is immaculate. Almost looks like fake grass in some areas it's so green, lush and perfectly manicured. Then you have the long native grass areas, which are hit and miss. Some areas weren't too bad with open places, then there were others with big patches of fescue that just swallow up your ball. The greens were excellent. Very smooth and medium/quick speeds. The rain made them more receptive today than I would guess they normally are. Lots of subtle breaks and undulations. Sand traps were a bit damp, but the sand was very nice quality.

This is a very neat links style course set amongst the farmland and right behind the Rolling Hills Casino. A lot of blind shots and awkward angles. Very few flat lies with undulating terrain. With the poor weather this winter, I'm impressed at how well kept up the course is, especially the rough and greens. I really look forward to coming back here in the summer when I can play the course as it's supposed to be played with a lot of tight lies and extra roll-out to help on some of the super long holes.
