I played this course for the second year in a row on the way to Sunriver. I really like this course. Conditions were well above average both times I played, and it's very scenic. It seems to have a lot of long uphill and downhill holes, which places a premium on club selection. POP not a problem midweek. Priced a little on the high side,. But I'd say generally that it's priced fairly. Has a grass driving range a huge putting green.

It's very slow here, but makes for a good warm up round. Not sure what to make of the course and resort. It was recently purchased by holiday inn chain, and I've never known them to be in the golf or resort business. It's a curious pairing. The course has some regulars and a few guest players like myself. The carts have no gps and there are no yardage guides available. The front desk guy said the course is well marked and said "basically what you see is what it is". I think he's right. They promote this as the only Arnold Palmer signature course in Oregon. I don't know what arnies deal is beyond the design, but he's not helping his branding here. Overall, course conditions ok. It's April, so I don't expect any better. Green fees with cart overpriced but holiday inn must be looking for a return on capital.

Good stop on the way to Bend. Small problem was that some of the bunkers were super wet but other than that it is a good course in a nice quiet location.

I've been wanting to play this course for the longest time and finally had my chance today on the way up to Bend. Worth the wait! Exceptional course on all levels. Got a GN time for $46 at 3:10 and that's a steal for this course. Played with another single coming down from Washington. Not too busy on a hot afternoon, but we were stuck behind a threesome and a slow foursome for awhile, but they both ultimately let us play through on the back nine and we finished in about 3.5 hours. These may be the best greens I've ever putted on. Deceptively hard to read the breaks. We had so many lip-outs and near-misses it was comical after awhile. These greens were pretty receptive on approaches, and so amazingly smooth on top. True as true can be. I was blown away how the ball just kind of glided across the surface effortlessly. The fairways were immaculate, as well. Bunkers great. Only a couple negatives. One is the rough. Mostly great with consistent lush grass coverage. Not deep, but so thick and sticky it really makes you work. However, they are having a serious ground squirrel epidemic it seems so there were all sorts of holes and patchy areas because of that. Nothing you notice until you get up close, but definitely an issue they can hopefully solve before it gets bad. Also, some of the fringe collars around the greens looked a little burnt out, but otherwise the course is in gorgeous condition!!! Definitely an Arnie kind of layout. Aesthetically pleasing with half of the holes running along some wetlands areas and the other half through the woods. This trend switches a few times back and forth throughout the course, so it's a nice mix overall of both styles during your round. The greens can be tricky, but most of the layout is not overly difficult. Like a lot of Palmer designs, it is as tough as you want to make it. The more aggressive you want to be, the more trouble comes into play (water, trees, bunkers, mounds). Safer players can play conservatively, though, and it's not hard to avoid the trouble if that's your top priority. Still, a lot of good risk/reward options for the more aggressive types. We ended up playing the whites, which were a tad too short for us at just over 5,900 yards. The next tees back (green) are over 6,500, so it's a large gap. Would be ideal if they had a combo set around 6,300. There's also back tees over 7,000 for the super studs. I have no doubt the tee selection here makes a big difference in the overall challenge factor, as well. In all, a fantastic course that's worth a stop. The biggest thing working against it is geography because it's just enough out of the way (2.5 hours south of Bend, 1 hour east of Medford) and there aren't a ton of other reasons to come through Klamath Falls. But if you are in the area, make it a top priority to play Running Y. You won't regret it.

For the last couple years I have wanted to play Running Y on one of my trips to/from Portland, but it just has never worked out because it is so far off of Interstate 5. I left the Bay Area early on a Saturday morning headed for Portland and decided that I would finally make the stop here. I found a time on golfnow for $52 around noon, got there a little early to unwind and then got out a bit early. The course's claim to fame is that it is the only Arnold Palmer design in Oregon and numerous golf magazines rate Running Y as one of the top public Oregon courses. After playing it that would be my opinion too. It should be noted that ended up playing here on 08/25/12 from the Palmer tees at 73.2/132/7138. The course has a bit of a high desert feel to it and it is at some elevation so the ball traveled a bit farther than normal for me. Running Y has everything about Oregon golf that I love: scenery, trees, cool summer weather, and elevation changes. The first 5 holes play alongside a wetlands area and are relatively flat before the rest of the back 9 climbs through the tree covered hills. The back is similar with a mixture of flat holes and hilly holes but the hilly holes are pleasant to play. The downhill holes (9th, 12th, and 16th) were my favorites as there was something quite fun about driver and wedge on the 9th and 16th which are long par 4s. The 17th, a mid length par 5, is one of the best designed holes that I have ever played. It features a split fairway off the tee with the right fairway being the shortest route but then I felt I almost had to go for the green in two because of the good angle. An out of position drive to the right fairway almost forced me to play an awkward layup to the left fairway which looked like an odd shot. The 18th hole is a strong finishing hole which played 469 back into a little wind and had water all down the left. Some homes are visible from a few holes but they did not detract from the play. The course maintenance from the tees to the greens was great with only a couple dry spots which did not affect play. The greens rolled very smooth and were sneaky fast and I thought tough to read. I had a few putts break the opposite way of my read. I would not call the course tricky but some local knowledge would help with some tee shots and around the greens. The course was fairly open off the tee with large fairways and the difficulty came on the approaches to firm greens with knobs which influenced chips and long putts and many bunkers. The pace of play was slow at just over 5 hours which I do not think is common here so I think I just caught it on a busy day. I would highly recommend Running Y and it would a perfect stop on the way to Bend from the Bay Area.
