Played here 8/25 as a part of a 3 course tour of the greater Portland area with GK member Kassper7 on a warm and humid Oregon day, with a 1pm tee time. First time playing here after hearing good things (pre-LIV) and some recommendations from locals. I must say even with somewhat tempered expectations, this place somehow fell short. It may have been their lack of attention to detail, the fact they didn't seem too focused on the customer, or the fact it didn't have the wow factor expected with professional players choosing to stop here this year, but I felt there are far better options in Norther OR.

Tees: Good shape (whites played today). Odds are the blues weren't in better shape since most males chose to play here, but nothing terrible about the whites.

Fairways: Good to great shape. No bad lies. Visually they are browning in many places, but roll and turf was still good.

Rough: Penal in many areas. Wayward shots are indeed punished in many areas.

Sand: Good shape. Sand here is more brown dirt-like sand, but there was enough in the bunkers for shot-shaping requirements.

Greens: Highlight of the round; felt they were in great shape, with speeds and breaks that were quite tricky at times. Also noticed the size of the green complexes varied from Pebble-like small (#10) to Aviara-type large.

ETC: As mentioned, the staff was very uninterested, with the younger staff seeming either too busy to help or too indifferent to care. Property is quite isolated. Plenty of parking. Nice clubhouse for the public. Range was rather uninspired. Course layout, while fun, left something to be desired. Pace was a great 4.25 hours with very little waiting. Recommend at a good price.

Played late morning on 6/4 getting paired with two locals and one member. The course had just opened up from cart path only the previous week (a foot and a half of rain over average will cause those two month delays) talking with the starter. Some fairways had been given a sand topdressing so a few lies were on the beachy side. Other than that maintenance, the course was in very good and lush shape. Greens were pure and FAST. Above the hole lead to some very defensive putting. Tee boxes were in good shape although some back boxes were unplayable due to high grass (2-3 feet) in front of them. Rough was thick though somewhat patchy in spots. A bit of a gamble once you strayed from the short stuff. Bunkers had good coverage and plenty of sand. Very happy with the experience for the first leg of my vacation rounds.

I want to personally thank Nickesquire for some detailed insight and reviews on all the courses in the Portland area. Using his reviews as a guide plus a personalized run down of the 4 courses we chose was valuable! This was course #3.

We played Pumpkin Ridge the morning of 7/14. The course is majestic and expansive. Obviously, it is one of the more famous courses in Portland because of what Tiger did here as an amateur. Layout is very expansive. It's a super grand course with acres of trees and golf holes. Reminded me of playing Plantation course in Maui without the crappy blind tee shots. Greens were in good, but not great shape. Lots of unrepaired ball marks. Fairways and traps were good, but not great. They decided to tuck all the pins today including #9 on the left side right by the water. Maintenance was pestering us all day. This was a prime 9 am tee time on a Tuesday, which was kinda annoying because we paid $111 to play this place. Pace of play was 5 hours behind 4 walking locals. Course is super challenging even from white tees and a few holes are definitely memorable. Customer service was great and the guys in our group thought the cart girl was Top Ten Best Ever!

2nd time here, played on a Golf Now Hot Deal for $50 including cart/range balls. Played the blues (6357/72.0/139) in 3.5 hours. Started off very overcast and drizzly but was partly cloudy and nice by the end of the round on a very calm, 65 degree afternoon. The course played long after rains several days earlier in the week. Both holes #9 & #18 are signature type holes, well over 400 yard par 4's with hazards to avoid off the tee, then lakes guarding the front and one side of the green. Beautiful course, very challenging layout, Not overly tight but if you get crooked more than a few yards in many places your ball is just gone. I felt comfortable with driver on the par 4's and par 5's, although on one I should have used an iron. I attribute the 139 slope from the blues to the thick rough, specifically the lost ball type native rough, the severity of the greens and especially the sight lines. Numerous holes have diagonal yellow hazards that run across the fairways, making accurate yardage measurements very important on club selection. Having diagonal yellow hazards running @ 60 or 70 degrees through numerous fairways is something most golfers rarely encounter, and here it is about every 3rd or 4th hole. The greens were still showing remnants of the aeration 3 weeks ago. They were medium speed and a little bumpy @ times, but generally putted well. They are big for the most part, undulating and you need to get the ball on the right tier of several greens, or it's a likely 3 putt. The sand traps were very well maintained with thick, fluffy sand and well trimmed around the lips. I rarely rate anything a 10, but these were a 10. The fairways were generally lush, you hardly got any roll today. The rough is thick and usually lush. It is punitive, you cannot hit longer clubs out of this stuff. The native areas are calf to knee deep, an almost sure lost ball or unplayable lie. The rough around the greens is very punitive. The tees were well maintained. The par 3 tee's were very well maintained, almost all divots fixed, very good to excellent overall. To me, great course, love the layout. However, this course still isn't worth the $90 - $125 they charge @ full rack rate to walk, but it is VERY well worth playing if you can get a deal.

Played last Wednesday afternoon with Nickesquire. Nick found us a Golfnow tee time for $59 walking. This was my first time golfing in Oregon and it was excellent! There were a few hot spots on many fairways, but it was not bad and, overall, I would rate them as excellent despite the occasional stressed turf. I loved the layout of the course and the many creeks that give this course its name were pristine. I think there were trout in the lakes here. The rough was cut nicely in most areas to about 1" to 1 1/2". The sand was in great shape. The greens were in great shape. No bumps, no bare areas, no poorly repaired ball marks. I meant to rate this course higher than the 7.7 because it was really nice. Great staff and facilities here. I wish Oregon was closer to me. I will try to make it back to this course next time I visit.

First time playing here. Picked up Kviser from the airport fresh out of So Cal. We had lunch halfway to the course, then drove over and walked the blues (6386/72.0/139) in 4.5 hours on a prepaid GolfNow deal for $59. Beautiful course, very challenging layout, not as tight as I expected. I hit one 3 iron and one 3 wood off the tee, otherwise I felt comfortable with driver on the par 4's and par 5's. #9 & #18 are both signature type holes. However, many had "hot spots" where the grass was discolored and obviously needed watering. You usually had good lies, not fluffy lies, but not tight either. 7/10. The rough is thick and usually lush. It is punitive, you cannot hit longer clubs out of this stuff. The native areas are calf to knee deep, an almost sure lost ball or unplayable lie. The rough around the greens is very punitive. I rolled through 18 green 3 inches into the rough green side and could barely advance the ball onto the green for fear of getting too much ball out of the deep stuff and going into the lake just on the other side of the pin. 8/10. The tees were well maintained, I liked the way the grass was cut close. Several had hot spots and a decent amount of divot damage, but were very good to excellent overall. 8/10. To me, great course, loved the layout overall. However, this course still isn't worth the $90 - $125 they charge @ full rack rate to walk, but it is well worth playing if you can get a deal.

I played in a scramble tourney here in just under 5 hours from the whites which are only 5921 but 69.8/136. Tips are 6839 and 74.5/147. This 36 hole layout has hosted national amateur and LPGA events using some holes from this public Ghost Creek side and the private Witch Hollow side also.

The course was in good to great condition and the only negatives were many soft fairway conditions making stance adjustments necessary and unpredictable bump and run shots and a high number of divots on some tee boxes. This has never been a great wet weather track and several days of rain prior brought out this weakness.

I enjoy the challenge of the course but the price (up to $125/18 WR) makes other options nearby much more palatable.

I played here on 04/27/12 from the blue tees at 72.0/138/6451 (par 71) and before that about 3 years ago. Pumpkin Ridge is one of the top plays in the Portland area. The Ghost Creek course is consistently rated as one of the 100 courses that you can play and is currently ranked as the 47th best public course by Golf Magazine. It should be said up front that this course is expensive and overpriced, I played it in the shoulder season and the only reason I played it is because a friend had a 2 for 1 coupon. The course is priced at $90 to walk and $106 to ride, but the price jumps up to $150 and $166 in the summer months. I walked the course for $45 (which felt like a walk in the park) and had a great day as the course is at the edge of some hills and a scenic meadow outside of Portland. I have read reviews of locals who say that the course does not drain well and that is the truth. Carts were not allowed off the cart paths and so much of the layout was muddy, soft, and wet, so much that someone paying full price would have been upset and for good reason. It was a little early in the season when I played and the greens rolled nice, a little bumpy but not unreasonable for a course on the West Coast when damp. About half the holes are tree lined giving the Pacific Northwest feel while the other half are in the open featuring numerous creeks and water hazards. The par 3’s here are awesome with #3 and #5 framed by trees in the background and #14 is maybe the signature hole, a downhill par 3 with great views of the mountains. Finally #16 is a very short par 3 with a tiny sloping green. The poor drainage aside, the course has a top 100 feel to it with multiple holes that could be signature holes at any other course and it is located in a scenic setting with views of the coastal mountains. When I played it the rough was long and thick and so penal that I could not get more than an 8 iron on the ball. I had a good day, but the price certainly would keep me away if I lived in the area.

Second round of day two's Road Trip was at Pumpkin Ridge, took advantage of afternoon rates to save some bucks, as this place is not cheap. I thought the facility was run very professional and in excellent shape on this sunny Oregon day ... everyone there was extremely friendly from the pretty college age waitress who served me a fantastic lunch (in the market for a BF, guys), to the fellows in the Pro Shop, and then the fun group of locals I Hooked up with.
The layout has some beautiful and challenging holes that run through the hilly Oregon woods ... Water comes into play on many holes and the rough was deep and tough to get out, so keeping it in the fairway is crucial if you want a decent score ... greens and bunkers were excellent. It's all straightforward but it helps to have some course knowledge. Another must play if you are in the Portland area.
