I hadn't been out to Roosevelt in a good while, generally electing for 18-hole courses, but grabbed a last-minute single time for 4:40 on Friday afternoon joining another single and a pair of brothers. The conditions are generally good here although, on the day, the blue and black tees were combined forward in the teeing grounds with the white and red further up. This left most of the teeing area reserved. I'm assuming it is for some kind of maintenance but only the first tee had any areas actually roped off with some indications of reseeding. But this is not the kind of course you go to to quibble about where exactly you tee from and any legitimacy it conveys. The place is hilly, pastoral and chill with an abundance of LA landmarks adjacent or within view. The tee boxes in use were a little worse for wear but serviceable enough. The fairways are in good shape, well grown in and a good length. Rough, where grass, varies with some thick areas but most playable for recovery. There are some wild areas you can get into not far off some of the fairways. I missed the bunkers and wasn't paying attention, but I noticed the one on the fourth fairway seemed to have good sand in it, albeit it not particularly groomed. Shots into the greens readily produced pitch marks and I repaired a bunch, but the greens were in decent shape overall and played well enough at a medium pace.

The $11 bucks I payed was less than a bucket a most places these days and I'd much rather be working things out on the course. The others in the group were pleasant enough companions and we finished after sunset with enough light to track the balls from tee to green on the downhill final par 3. It definitely has some challenges to go along with some nice views, but it seems to come with a relaxed vibe — in a way, a scene as much as scenic. Very enjoyable as a change-of-pace casual round.

Found a time online the previous day and went out Friday 9/15 as single joined by a single @1:15. Overall conditions were pretty good. Teeing grounds here are generally pretty level and had enough or good coverage with some of the par 3's less so. My test for tees is when the round is over little comes to mind because I didn't have any issues, and that was the case. Fairways were in nice shape, offering good lies with nary a bare or brown spot in sight. Where green, the rough cut to a playable height. Green surrounds were similarly good with some areas longer and thicker but still gettable. Bunker sand did not seem too firm and I wouldn't describe them as hard, but I was in a few and the ball consistently perched on the surface so there is a definite firmness. Certainly not fluffy but consistent with few footprints. The greens looked a little less than pristine, but they putted fine at a medium speed that tracked well. Bring your divot tool. We started out with space but when we caught up around the fifth hole the pace became much more measured so the total time was a touch over 4.75 hours.

As an aside, I checked the reviews before booking and 24hourgolf had written the most recent, and particularly negative review. There was nothing wrong with his review (he writes good ones) and I'm sure it was accurate. But I noticed the problems all centered around overwatering. I guessed that if things had dried out since, it was worth a shot. I guessed right and it turned out to be very nice, dry and green. Note that he played AM I played PM but I hope his experience was an anomaly. Recommended.

Out Friday 9/8 around 12:30 with a buddy as a twosome. 24hourgolf reviews this place very regularly and accurately so this is more obligatory than adding anything new. It's in good shape. Tee boxes have no issues. Some patchy areas on the first and sixth fairways come to mind but otherwise fairways are in nice shape with good lies. Rough is mostly mowed, green and well grown in with some variance in length and certain areas prone to hardpan — like just about any place. The bunkers I experienced were clean but pretty firm with a lighter top layer of sand. The ball tends to perch on top and they were consistent, so I think that was fair. No issues pitching around the greens and the greens themselves are pretty clean and a quick medium — soft enough to leave pronounced pitch marks. Not bad, but I made a point of repairing a lot of extra marks throughout the round.

Pace was under four hours and while the course was reasonably busy, we had at least one open hole front and back through more of the round than not. After about 5:00 on Friday they open up a bar at the end of the bottom level driving range stations. With this lower level having been TopGolf-ified there are additional couches set back from the bays where you can hang out, have a drink and watch the range activity unfolding before you without actually being in (or paying for) one of the bays. It was a nice time of day to hang and have some beers, which we did. A short but well kept course with two very different nines, it reflects an engaged management. I always find it enjoyable. Got out this 8/31 afternoon as a single, teeing off around 3:00 from the whites. Playing a two-club wind, the conditions were very nice overall. Fairways were in good shape and rolling out nicely, while the greens were mostly clean, playing the quick end of medium. The weak point here is usually the bunkers and I played out of two: front green-side on the seventh hole and right fairway on the 14th. The first was pretty nice and the second was like a parking lot. The foursome ahead finally let me through on the 10th and I finished a bit under 3.75 hrs. Pro shop gave the heads up that there was no beverage cart or halfway service, nor was there water except for the bathroom faucets. Not optimal, but at least I knew, so I was prepared (know before you go?). Beautiful day and I always enjoy getting a chance to play here. Still recommended.

Out with a buddy today, 8/24, playing the whites as twosome with a 12:30 start. I'll keep it brief and say the overall conditions are green and solid tee to green I especially liked the consistency of the coverage on the teeing grounds. One could quibble that the bunkers had soft layer over a harder base, but the ball tended to sit up and I actually had a decent day playing out of more bunkers than I usually visit. The greens ran the fast end of medium, were in good shape, and a fun challenge as to contours.

The day was not cool, but there was a nice breeze that worked with your sweat to keep things comfortable. The course was busy overall, but we started in a pocket of our own with space ahead and behind, and had minor delays only into the back nine. We were not exactly keeping a torrid pace, so I was surprised at the end that we got around in about 3.75 hrs. Nice. It's an interesting, fun layout with some quirks in a beautiful canyon setting. Our only previous experience at MM having been playing just the front nine once, my buddy and I got out for the full 18 on Friday 8/4 around 2:00 paired with another twosome who blew doobies the size of small cigars for much of the round. Intermittent smoke clouds not withstanding, the playing conditions overall were pretty good. Playing from the white tees, the grounds were consistently level with good coverage. The grass was mown but frequently thick, so it took a little more tee to reach the dirt underneath in places. The fairways had some occasional thin or brown spots but those were isolated exceptions to the generally nice hitting surface that the coverage provided. As an aside, the course had an overall healthy, green look to it. Rough was green and fair in that it was playable but would usually cost you something in the recovery process, especially when the need was for distance. Bunkers were mixed. My buddy was in one in which he complained about how hard the sand was. I was in a few and found the basic sand quality mostly pretty good, the negative being a lack of grooming to varying degrees. Despite that, I mostly got fair lies in them. The green-side areas are well grown in and suitable for short game and the greens were in nice shape — I'd say the fast end of medium. They didn't seem super quick but we discovered on the practice green that balls rolled out further than seemed commensurate with the speed. Aware of that adjustment, they were pretty clean and fun to putt on. So, with some minor reservations about the bunkers, overall playing conditions are very solid.

Having only seen/played the front nine previously, getting to play the full 18 kind of blew me away. The course is built on and around what can be described as a small mountain. There is a lot of visual interest with the altitude changes providing some amazing views of both the surrounding area and the course itself. I got that when I played nine here the first time, but I'd say it applies to the back nine even more. The topography and layout make it tougher than my average course and there are definitely a few holes I would politely describe as "eccentric" — the tenth probably the best example with a tree in the middle of a fairway that also sloped left to right. But even though I came away with a well-soiled scorecard and frustration at some blown opportunities, I was exhilarated by the unexpected aesthetics and mostly welcomed the more challenging aspects. Perhaps this is just me, but I'm surprised I'd not heard a bit more about this place. Having experienced the full 18, my buddy and I agreed it was a find we would put on our list for future rounds.

Not having been here in a good while, I was surprised that the most recent review was back in October '22, and even though I very rarely get out to LR, it did not disappoint. My buddy and I were paired with another two-some, teeing off around midday. Playing the whites, the teeing rounds were pretty consistently level with good coverage. The fairways were in good shape. A few lush to the point of spongey while most were a little firmer with reasonable rollout. A lot of rough has been removed, edged and replaced with wood chips and dry-scaping. It saves a lot of watering and makes the course look well defined. Where there is still green rough it could get thick in patches. A rework of the bunkers was the other major part of the remodel done some years back and they are formidable — deep with very vertical green-side walls. In some cases, playing sideways or backwards to get out is the percentage move. There seemed a shortage of rakes so they weren't always as groomed as they could be, but the sand quality is nice. Green surrounds were good for the short shots and the greens themselves were good, if a little diabolical. On the fast end of medium, it seemed like the pins were frequently on enough slope that anything above and from the side was extra tricky. We speculated that the greenskeeper woke up a little cranky. Definitely some challenge to them but clean and fun.

It was pretty warm but enough breeze to wick off the sweat and keep it reasonable. Heat was not the issue I feared it might be, but I was mostly riding in lieu of my usual walk and carry mode. Pace was a little over five hours but because it was pretty steady, didn't seem that long. This is an interesting layout with good variety of holes and challenge. I thought was well worth the senior rate of $53 with cart. It was my buddies first exposure to the course. He liked it and is definitely interested in a return visit. I won't get back here too often but it definitely won't be as long an interval as this last one. Recommended.

This is very late as I played Friday, 6/30 at 1:50, but since the previous post is from back in late April, it makes this pretty current. I played from the whites, joining another single and a twosome with me being the sole walker. The short story is it played well and I enjoyed it. Teeing is fine, fairways are a less than aesthetically pleasing psychedelic mix of grasses, but they are mown evenly, give reasonably good lies and are starting to dry up and give more rollout. In many cases, the rough is not significantly longer than the fairways. Bunkers were in decent shape and mostly clean. The surrounding areas provided generally good but variable short game opportunities and the greens themselves were in good shape — consistantly medium quick, a little spongey and mostly clean with few marks.

Being one of the first days when the temps were due to bump up 10º or more, I was a little leery about walking but it is a good walking course. It didn't get oppressively hot and there was a nice breeze to take some of the edge off. The twosome was nice, the single a bit touchy, but he loosened up by the end. The price was right, pace varied but came in at about 4.25 hrs. Straight forward muni golf, and with the appropriate expectations, nothing to complain about. As stated above, I enjoyed it.

Out Wednesday 6/14, @1:30 as a twosome paired with a twosome, and playing the gold tees. Conditions overall at this course are usually solid and such was the case. Tees had good coverage and none significantly less than level. Fairways had good coverage and lies, leaning a tad more tight than lush with decent rollout. There could be some variance in the rough — mostly lush, could frequently cost you a shot, but rarely can't-find-my-ball deep. However, far enough off line you can get into natural areas that are a whole 'nother story. I was in at least three bunkers and they were in good shape as far as grooming and sand quality. Closely mown areas leading up to the greens could be a little tight, but otherwise the surrounds offered good opportunities to get up and down. The greens were clean and on the quick side. There can be nuanced breaks to consider for a little extra challenge.

It was busy, check-in was easy and the pace was about five hours but mostly steady. Started out grey and cool, got sunny and warm, then sunny and breezy, and finished grey, cool and zero wind. Interesting day weather-wise. Got out with a cart for a senior rate of $45 which I thought a good deal for an interesting course in good shape. Recommended.

Got a 1:30 slot on Friday 5/27 for our twosome and were joined by a sociable single. Overall conditions are pretty good but with some exceptions. Generous swaths of the first and 18th fairways have been roped off where the turf seems to have been damaged and is undergoing some kind of replacement. On the first fairway it begins around 220 yards out from the tee and continues for about 40 yards so it definitely has to be factored in to your tee shot and how you play the hole. On the 18th where the disruption crosses over, it is less of a factor because it starts closer to the tee and any reasonable tee shot will land well past it. As far as the rest, teeing grounds are in good shape and level, fairways are green and on the lush side, the rough is consistently grown in and will cost you a shot or more. The one bunker i visited had good sand but a bit heavy from dampness. Short game areas were in good shape for execution and the greens were clean, running the quick side of medium.

The course was busy as usual and the pace was sluggish and not promising until things picked up around the ninth hole. As a result, it felt slower but we ended up getting around in 4.25 hours, which is pretty good. The range is undersized for two courses and frequently has a line waiting to hit, so give yourself extra time if you plan on warming up. For my own reasons, Brookside is not one of my favorites so I get there about once a year even though I am local, but I thought it was in good shape and played well.

Out Friday 5/19, 12:30 as a twosome joining a twosome. Overall conditions there are typically solid and the greens in good shape with brisk medium pace. Faster to list the few exceptions. Portions for the sixth and seventh greens have strips gouged in them at one end while the balance of those greens is in good shape. I was in three bunkers, two were firm and damp while the third was firm and a bit less damp — not fun to hit from. That's it. The rest is in pretty good shape and worth the cost of admission. The course was busy but mostly open directly in front of us and we got around in a touch over 4.25 hrs.

Friday 5/12, myself and another single were sent out at 2:50 as twosome in a sea of foursomes, but we were happy to get out and played the whites. Overall conditions are OK. I found these to be some of the better teeing grounds around as to being consistently level with coverage and room to move around. The fairways, a kaleidoscope of mixed grasses cut to a consistent height, generally offered 95% good lies and runout, with 5% or less exceptions where there might be small areas of thin or slightly depress lies that you might settle into — rare but possible. I was a little spoiled by the lush fairways I recently played at San Dimas and these paled in comparison, but they are OK — green, serviceable and not yet the baked out runways that they could become as the season heats up. Rough varied from minimal to thicker areas of clover that could swallow a ball. I'd say it impacted my recovery about 50% of the time. I was in a couple of fairway bunkers that had decent sand and grooming but missed any green-side to tell about. Short game areas around the green were in pretty good shape and I had a lot of success there. The greens still have the telltale markings from aeration but they performed fine. A touch on the quick side of medium they putt a little quicker than they looked, ran pretty true and I never saw bobble. I jarred a thirty footer for birdie at the last that was pleasure to watch track to the hole. I'd say the conditions alert can be upgrade from yellow to green. They were good and they will get even better.

It was a mildly warm afternoon with an intermittent breeze and, being a flat course, I walked as per my usual preference. The course was full, pace sluggish but mostly steady for a round something under 4.5 hrs. A straight forward, open course with nothing tricked up about it, I come here seldom but I enjoyed the directness of it today.
