Played the Blues in the 5/7 GK event. The weather was weirdly cool, overcast, and sprinkled on a couple of holes. POP was about 5 hours - pretty standard for a Sunday afternoon tournament I suppose.
Layout:
Aside from the two island green holes (par 3 8th, and the really fun rrisk reward par 5 15th), this is not my favorite layout. Most holes are pretty straightforward, with either bunkers, or water to avoid. Another trait of this course that Im not a big fan of is that virtually every hole is raised/elevated/perched. Its not always visible either, or even reflected on the gps, so if you miss the fairway or green by a tiny bit, you will be down in a swail/hollow/bunker hitting back up to the perched green (or fairway). This is a feature that adds challenge, and is useful/acceptable for a couple holes, but it seemed like every single hole had this character, and good shots from the entire group were rolling off edges, which became a bit annoying after a while. However, the split fairways were appreciated, and the challenging finishing holes 9/18 both with long approach shots over water into a double green were cool, intimidating and beautiful holes. Overall, I enjoyed the water holes and split fairway/risk, reward holes, but I would have liked more variety and less of the plateau feel on every hole.

Condition:
The tees were in good shape. The fairways were lush and nice to play from. The rough was also lush and just challenging enough without being too penal. The sand traps are frequent, thick, and mostly in good shape. The greens were mostly firm and slow to medium speed. Not a ton of break on most greens here, and the breakers were clear/not mysterious. The cart girl was out making the rounds numerous times. Excellent customer service from everyone involved with the golf.

Restaurant:
The restaurant food after the round was very good, but service was slow, unorganized, and handled our check very poorly. Unbeknowst to me, they refused to write separate checks, leaving a massive group at the end to figure it out for ourselves, like a group of high school kids? I get that a server doesnt want to deal with 30 checks, but we also dont want to deal with one massive check, and at least let us know thats what we are in for if you are going to hit people with that mess at the end (I wasnt even given notice of that). On top of that, they added on the a mandatory 18% gratuity for large parties (again, a surprise to me, as I thought I was just ordering a burger for a party of 1). Aside from that, its great course in excellent to immaculate condition. Hopefully the restaurant can improve on the large party policies.

Played in the 11/22 GK Plays outing, and had a lot of fun chasing my balls around this fun track and putting some faces to all the helpful reviews Ive read on here for a while. We were in the last group out at 1231 and finished in just over 4 hours, which was a perfect POP to get it done just before the sun set on the day.

The course is in solid shape - really no complaints. Tee boxes were good and I never had a fairway lie I wasnt perfectly content with. Rough a bit inconsistent, wet/muddy in a couple spots and fluffier in others, but that shouldnt be much of a factor for those that opt not to frequent the rough as much as I did haha. The greens were very very very fast. Maybe Im just used to softer greens, but I was knocking everything by the hole and my short game was a disaster as a result. Bunkers were pretty inconsistent - I was in two on the day; one was a little too firm and made what couldve been a good shot roll all the way from one end of the green to off the other side (but the green sloped that way also) and the other was much softer.

I really like the layout and mix of holes here, as there are a good handful of risk/reward par 4s that give you options off the tee, which I think is a characteristic many courses would be wise to model. I also appreciate that the fairways are narrow and winding enough to challenge and reward good shot control, but not too narrow to be excessively punishing to those of us sprayers decorating the course with our inconsistency haha. In other words, it strikes the right balance between challenging and fair, but man, beware of the speed of these greens!

Thanks to Johnny, the sponsors, and the Goose for contributing to a great time playing a great game. Im looking forward to the next one, and highly recommend to all the others out there on this site that havent been yet.

Its aaaalmost there. Not quite, as there are still 3 hole under repair as par 3s, and a handful of the par 4s have fairway sections under repair. My rating was tough on the course accordingly, as Im rating it on a par 72 scale. Greens are the one thing thats good to go on all 18, which is a good sign. Fairways need the most work of all parts of the course, and teeboxes are adequate (except the 3 under repair par 3 holes - there are literally turf mats - c'mon Victoria! you can do better than that, even if its temporary).

This course has potential under its current management with its fun little layout once its back in shape. The problem is, I dont think the course itself knows when it will be back to full health as one pro shop guy told me it'd be ready end of March, and another guy said end of April. Until then, if you dont mind a par 68 thats almost there and has a slightly discounted price, give it a shot.

Played 1/12/14. Guy at pro shop had some insightful advice about what tees to play and course tips, etc. which was a good start to the day. Very fun and interesting layout for a desert course. Course was in nice shape tee to green, and it was challenging without being too penal for errant shots. I played a bunch of nearby courses during this same trip and this one and Tubac were by far my favorites. As far as local courses go, anybody who plays haven instead of Torres Blancas is crazy. This course is miles more fun and in better shape.

Booked tee time for 1/18/14 at 11:20. Arrived at course at 10:30, asked pro shop guy how it was looking, and he replied: busy. I then asked, "are you backed up at all?" and he responded "no, were not behind." I then hit balls, and pull up to starter at 11, and he says, "come back in 30-40 minutes, we are way behind." We dont end up teeing off until 12:10 (50 minutes late!!). I told the starter that one in our group had a time constraint and wouldnt be able to finish 18 because of the delay and politely asked if there was a 9-hole rate or a credit that could be considered and he rejected it almost laughingly (Gerry).

We ended up slogging it out and the guy in my group had to leave early (with his ride) leaving me on my own to (barely) finish in the dark at 5:15ish.

Thats a 6-hour round! (counting booked time). Ridiculous. We waited..on....every...shot!!! The course will probably say there were "course marshals" driving around, but they werent doing anything, except driving up to us and asking if "we were okay", which made us believe they were just off duty cartgirls, because thats what cart girls say! We didnt even know how to respond to that. Are we okay? not really, we're getting a sunburn standing out here waiting for this group. That leads me to the group ahead: a 7-year old kid, and 3 tattooed Corona thugs hacking up the course hitting MULTIPLE balls each. I followed the instructions on the gps screen and pressed the "player assistance" button to speak with a marshall, but low and behold, nothing happened, probably because they were busy driving around doing nothing. BRUTAL.

The course layout and design was a nice change, but the fairways were just dead and hard, but painted of course, to attempt to fool people into thinking it was in good shape (with no disclaimer of the painting). The greens were in pretty good shape, but the teeboxes were decent at best. All in all, a brutal round. What could be a decent course in the right conditions (not now) was totally ruined by the overbooking, greed, and lack of customer service (and deception by the pro shop).

Played 11/27/13 in a group of 3. Cannot complain at all about course condition. No real noticeable issues with teeboxes, greens or fairways. I really like the layout of the course as well. Its interesting, has some unique holes, uses the bodies of water well, and is fair. It encourages smart plays, doesnt punish bad shots too much, and gives you reasonable risk/reward options. Prices are fair as well.

The only slight complaint was pace of play, for those of you who hate slow play. We teed off at 11:45 and barely finished before sunset @4:45, so it was a 5 hour round. I dont really mind that too much because I like to relax and not be rushed, but I know its a big deal to a lot of players. It might have just been because there was a group of 4 women ahead of us walking, or maybe a slower group ahead of them, so not necessarily the fault of the course.

One more small complaint was that we did not see a cart girl once the whole day. The snack shack at 10 is fine, but a refreshment cart on course wouldve been nice. It might've been because it was the day before thanksgiving though...
