It's been about a year since I last played here, shortly after the course was re-opened. For the most part, conditions were worse today than they were last year. On the plus side, the tee boxes were in good to great shape and the greens were in good to great shape although they were rolling slow. The fairways on over half the holes were thin and in some cases virtually nonexistent. According to the staff, they are trying to fix the fairways but instead of putting down new sod they seem to be trying to seed them. With daily play I don't think this has much chance of success even though half the course was cart path only. The absolute worst part of the whole round was the condition of the bunkers - both fairway and greenside. May of them were more inch-sized rock than they were dirt or sand. It looks as though someone took dirt/sand from the rough and waste areas and just dumped it into the bunkers without even attempting to screed out the rocks. I don't think I'll be returning this time. Too many other courses in much better overall condition to play.

I have played both the Palms and Lakes courses quite a bit over the past year. The course is in decent shape taking into account that it is winter time and they did not overseed the fairways this year. Pace of play usually isn't a problem and with two courses they can have their members' groups on one course and the general public on the other. I normally walk, even during the hot summer months, and one of the things I liked about Menifee Lakes is that they offered an unpublished walking rate that saved $10 per round. Well, apparently the few "walkers" that they do have cut into the revenue enough that they have now done away with their walking rate. I realize this won't impact many, but I wanted to put that out there for those that do walk and had previously taken advantage of the walking rate.

Played the course on 4/26. I've played here a few times and the course has never been in what I'd call in great shape. Yesterday was no exception. The tee boxes were in good shape and the greens were decent but slow. The sand traps were mediocre and the fairways were horrible. One of the issues seems to be over-watering of the fairways which in turn effects the traps. Many of the sand traps were obvious collection points for run-off; while there was no standing water the bottom of the traps were damp and in some cases crusted over from the water. There were many places in the fairways that were soggy to the point where you could hear the water slosh as you drove over the area in the cart. There are quite a few bare spots in the fairways that aren't small but are quite large. The worst hole, however is the 17th. It seemed like nearly half the fairway was "ground under repair". There were very large areas in the middle of the fairway that had been dug up and replaced with sand several inches deep. From the tee box it looked like the fairway was more sand trap than fairway. Both my partner's and my drives ended up in one of these repair area and it was a bit of a challenge to even find a place remotely close to the original landing spot to hit the next shot from. It seems like the head groundskeeper really wasn't thinking about playing the course when he decided this was the way to deal with the fairway issues.
