I had a chance to play a couple of rounds over the Christmas break between the rain storms. Even though conditions were a bit wet, the course drains quite well. I did not experience any standing water or unplayable lies. Given the cart path only conditions I chose to walk one of the rounds.
Summary:
Wonderfully enjoyable, old San Diego golf layout, with tree lined fairways, lots of interesting topography, and great conditions. The shortish layout (6,500+ from the black) plays harder than the yardage. It's had some similarities to Rancho Bernardo Inn and Oaks North, but it's superior green complexes and excellent conditions set it apart from the other private courses in the area--Stonebridge and Bernardo Heights.

Details:
CCRB, features 100% poa annua greens of mostly consistent single-strain poa, without any blochy or patchy spots found on many courses that have mixed poa or bent like Maderas Golf Course. The greens were found to be generally uniform in color, very good density and rolling consistency similar to San Diego CC or Torrey Pines. The speeds varied from 9 ft. to 10.5 feet depending on if they were cut, or cut and rolled. I was told in the winter the mowers are generally set at 0.095 blade height. The greenskeeper Mike is fairly new to the organization, and I was told he is gradually firming up the surfaces. My playing partner is a high -spin player and zipped a few short irons off the front with too much spin and grab. My medium spin approaches held nicely, with a foot or two backspin. The greens, and the ability to hold less than ideal shots, made for a fun day.
Fairways--
Fairways are a blend of kikuyu overtaking bermuda, with no overseeding during the winter (at least when I played). The fairways were very nice and lush, healthy and well rooted, with smooth surfaces only broken up by the sanded divots. Given the time of the season, the divot damage to the fairways were not extreme. The kikuyu did not effect the playablity of the fairways at all, and in fact the ball sits up great. I was only slightly disappointed by the lack of a semi-rough cut at the edges. The fairway to rough transition was traditional. ( I was a spectator last summer during the Junior World Tourney, and the fairways had a nice 2 yard "first cut".) For a dormant grass fairway, they were as green and smooth as could be expected.
Rough--
The rough is almost 100% kikuyu, cut to a low to moderate height, with some mixed in patches of either fescue or rye. This course protects par with the numerous collection of trees on both sides of the fairways. Mixed species of Pines, Eucalyptus and other assorted trees find a way to grab an errant shot. The trees were mostly overgrown, poorly trimmed, or otherwise lacked maintenance. For a private club, I was surprised how poorly the trees were managed.
Layout:
The layout winds through the homes, with occasionally homes and OB on both sides, but not overly tight. There is room to miss, but the trees will get you if the Kikuyu doesn't.
Hole 9 returns to the clubhouse. Bathrooms on holes 5 and 16 are available--don't want to get kicked off for peeing on the course ( #Micheal.Jordan!)
The course has a unique 35-37 par 72 layout, with (1) par 5 on the front (no. 1) and (3) par 5's on the back, including hole 10 and 18. The par 5's give good scoring opportunities. I like starting on an easy par 5 and finishing with a scoreable par 5. The mix of dog-legs is a good variation in both directions. The majority of the par 4's are fairly straight. The topography can be a real challenge on some of the holes especially the 9th. Driver shot hit mid-fairway to a 220 yard carry will fall off to the left rough (on a dogleg right). It would take a 270 yard carry to hit the down-slope and roll straight. Hole 10 is a weak par 5 IMO, although it has some character. No driver here. A 190 yd. shot to a landing area is required due to the hard right turn. From there is a straight two-shots to the green. The severe sloped fairway to the right and OB right, and big tree in front, protect par and add some redeeming qualities. Hole 14 is a long uphill par 5, and hole 15 is a big downhill par 4. Hilly, but not extreme.
Other:
Good guest rate: 80.00 regular, 40.00 twilight, and half of those rates for extended family. 40.00 twilight is fantastic. I will pay that all day long.
Nice newer clubhouse, decent putting green.
Driving range is shared with the neighboring Rancho Bernardo Inn, and is below average.

Bottom Line: This is the best of the second tier private clubs, more fun than Morgan Run, Stoneridge, Shadowridge, Bernardo Heights, or El Camino CC.
