Played today (4/22/24) only a few days after it finally REOPENED after years of being closed for renovations. As you'd hope and expect, it's in pretty good shape, as good of shape as I've ever seen it. Tee boxes were fair, with good coverage. My only complaint would be that they were a bit firm in spots, i.e., difficult to stick your tee in the ground at the desired height. Fairways were great, very lush, with few unfilled divots and even fewer bare spots. Rough was a little rough (pun intended). It wasn't bad, per se, but it wasn't great. It was short, which is nice, but the coverage/lushness was spotty. I feel like that is in part due to the type of grass they use (which I don't know what that is). Of all the areas on the course, this was the weakest. On the other hand, the greens were the best part of the course. They were a little on the slow side--despite also being fairly firm--but I reckon that's because of how new they are. They did appear like they'd been punched in the recent past--which I'm not sure why that'd be necessary, if they're brand new--so perhaps that was part of it, too. But they rolled fairly true, and the surfaces looked new, which is a cool sight to see. Lastly, the bunkers. All things considered, they were good. I say it that way because they were difficult to hit out of with the type and/or consistency of the sand. Usually, you think hard pack/dirt/concrete when you hear about difficult bunkers. This was the opposite. The sand was heavy, yet very soft and light. Kinda like beach sand. It was also super white. If you ask me, this is all because it's brand new, and over time, it'll settle and compact. But for now, you need to hit close enough to the ball and with enough speed, if you hope to get it out, let alone hit a good shot (though I'm also a very weak bunker player, so maybe that shouldn't mean much coming from me, haha).

Spent Sunday afternoon at Diamond Bar GC with three friends despite recent reports of renovation issues (nothing that affected play) and poor conditions (sadly far too true). Check-in staff was not good in terms of their attitude, the cart one of my friends used kept stalling on every hole and needing restart, and there is no water/ice machine anywhere which is pretty rough on a super hot summer day.

But alas, the game goes on. After hitting some balls on the range, we took off for our 11:40 tee time - three walkers, one riding, and all playing from the blue tees. As previously mentioned, the highway construction only impacted the third hole, but it's actually much better now than it used to be. It's a fine par 3. In fact, the layout and mix of holes at Diamond Bar is actually quite fun, including that wild, uphill par 3 9th hole. The problem is the conditions.

Right now you're going to find burned out fairways on almost every hole, but also a few with some nice lush areas. But far too often I would hit a perfect drive in the middle of the fairway and be rewarded with dirt or the thinnest of lies. That's frustrating, but it's August in SoCal so I'm fairly understanding. I'm less willing to accept the amount of horrible tee boxes that were either a shaggy, unkempt mess as if hitting from the rough, or else just plain dirt. Some of course were just fine, but far too many were a shambles. Bunkers I avoided all day so I can't really speak to their quality.

Greens were actually pretty good, as evidenced by only 28 putts on the afternoon. I found them to move pretty well at medium-fast speeds with little to worry about in terms of tiers or 'tricked out' areas. There are a few small greens and ones that have a decent amount of slope to them, but nothing that will get the blood pressure racing. They held shots well and were generally the best part of the course. Props for that.

POP was also very good as we only waited on a few holes on the back nine after the group ahead of us got a little behind at the turn. Other than that it was smooth sailing on the front nine and much of the back so that was a good thing. We saw a marshall/ambassador on the 9th hole green, but he didn't seem to have all that much to do, which I guess is a good thing.

I do like the bones of this course and it suits my eye pretty well in terms of scoring, but conditions right now are not optimal and I hope they return to a better state in the near future. I'll definitely be back again but will wait to hear more favorable tales of the course's condition before that happens.

The new layout has potential to improve pace of play too.

Will continue to play here until they close the course around July...some say September.

Had not played Diamond Bar for a while and wanted to return before they closed it. Lots of construction, but nothing that really affected play too much. I must admit that the shorter #3 did not really upset me all that much because I traditionally struggle with that hole.

Not a bunch to add to the prior review. I found the course to be in better condition that I expected. Particularly the greens, which I felt rolled better and quicker than I remember them being. Most fairways had good coverage. Rough was a bit inconsistent.

While never my favorite County course, it will be sad to have any course closed, even if only temporarily. We need affordable courses right now, that have not spiked their prices because of Covid.

Played Diamond Bar with Stickboy as a twosome on a beautiful afternoon in a little over 4 hours. There is a lot street widening on front of the course and only hole 3 is affected. 3 went from 180-190 yards to 125-150 yards. Besides the construction on the course is in really nice shape, best I have seen it in sometime.
The greens really are firm and roll very smooth, just point and aim. Didn’t see very many ball marks on green. Tee boxes were mostly level and very little divot damage on the par 3’s. Still no sand on the carts but there are rakes in the sand traps, and traps were fine to play from. Overall the course was very playable and our pace moved along quite well playing behind 2 foursomes. Enjoyed the day, recommended…

Had a 7:10 tee time today and got out right on time. I played as a single until #9 when I caught a twosome.
Tee boxes are just ok with many having a lot of divot damage. Overall the course is a bit on the dry side so some fairways had decent coverage but some were thin-hard and had bare spots.
The rough is not much different than the fairways just with more bare areas.
I was in a couple of bunkers and they had ample dark brown sand but are still without rakes.
The greens were the best part of the course with good surfaces to put from but on the slow side.
The third hole is still a par three but it has been moved a little to the west and is shorter. The whole east side of that area has had the trees cut down and is being cut away to make room for the road work.
The pro shop said that per Cal Trans the course will close in july for about a year and a half and be completely redesigned. The time frame could change depending on how well the work goes. They did not know who was doing the redesign work. Maybe Johnny can find out???
The course looks like it is not being maintained very well and I expect it will continue to go downhill until the closure.

I actually had no intention of playing golf today, but received a call last evening asking if I would fill in for one of the players. I thought, why not, my LA County senior discount card is about to expire and decided that for about $20, go for it.

I have never been a huge fan of Diamond Bar. It's a decent course, just not very exciting. Conditions were consistent with the prior review. Fairways/rough very sparse. Greens were far and away the highlight of the course. I guess I expected them to be faster, but maybe because I found myself below the cup, didn't seem all that quick.

I have to admit that the freeway noise seems worse than I remember. Still it was nice to get out unexpectedly.

Played a GK Cup team match at Diamond Bar and was looking forward to checking it out for the first time ever. The layout is pretty straightforward with a few quirky holes to add some spice, but it's a decent test of golf, made more challenging by the less than ideal conditions. Each player who paid for a cart had to take their own as there are no shared carts at this time, but they are quite dated and certainly no frills. The driving range was closed at the time we played but looked pretty non-maintained, and the putting green practice area was also sealed off. Snack bar closed and only a few snacks to purchase at the starter's booth. Fairways and rough both very thin and in need of maintenance, or watering, or something. Lies were thin all day and required very solid ball striking to get just rewards. Visually the course is not great, and it's quite loud when you're either at greens or tee boxes very close to the 60 freeway. Not sure I've ever played a course so loud before. I was only in one bunker and it was just okay, while the tee boxes were a mixed bag but mostly flat and level, however nothing to write home about in terms of coverage. What about the greens? Sneaky fast. Like really fast. And there are some severe slopes on these greens so staying below the hole is quite vital. Greens really were the saving grace though as they had good coverage, didn't necessarily look fantastic, but played fast and straight. Even held shots well, too. Needless to say I was a little underwhelmed by Diamond Bar but would go back in a pinch if I heard that conditions had improved. The layout is interesting enough to come back again, although I didn't care much for the par 3 9th hole - pretty much a small green atop a volcano while hitting over a lake. But the rest was fine and 18 is a very strong closing hole.

A little late with this review as I played DB on 10/14 with a 7:50 tee time for 4 of us. We checked in a little early with the young man behind the counter who was not exactly the most customer friendly guy in the world. Get this kid in a customer service class soon please. He could use it. We kept asking him when we will go off and would he call us to the tee. He said only when all have checked in. Well, we all checked in but we kept having to come in and find out when we could go to the tee. Hate that and fortunately it wasn’t too crowded. Anyway, we got off about 20 minutes late. Oh well.

Fairways were in pretty good shape even though it is cut down kikuyu. Still pretty lush and in the fairway, we got good lies for the most part. The rough wasn’t as nice. Pretty bad lies on hard pan and weeds. Bunkers were not as bad as they looked. Damp but playable even though many were not raked. Tee boxes are under repair or something as they have been raked over.

The greens were in pretty good condition. Not real fast unless you’re putting downhill.

I really enjoy the lay out here. Pretty challenging playing to around 6,800 yards from the blues but the freeway noise is brutal. Can’t even carry a conversation with anyone. I knew that already but it was particularly loud on this day with the heavy traffic. Noticed that they are opening a new hole. #3, a par 3 is being replaced with a different par 3 just off to the side of the original one. Not open just yet but it looks real nice. I’m not rushing back to play here anytime soon. A nice change of pace but playing it every couple of years or so is just about right.
