Played Saturday late morning. What a slow round! Overall the course is in good condition though. First off, course should not allow maintance people on the first tee while people of are teeing off. Kind of sets the tone when you're on your backswing and you hear them talking to eachother a couple of feet away! Second, we were the 3rd group out after a slow tourney. On the second, the group ahead of us was stopped by maintenance, to water the green or to give a little more room to for the tourney. Anyway, that's what kind of day it was. Teeboxes were nice, some bare spots. Fairways were in good condition. Roughs were pretty thick. Traps were soft. Greens were okay. They were slow in the beginning (from all the watering they did) but it got better on the back 9. Overall, course is good. Wish the pace was better, but what can you expect from a muni.

Played today 9/13/08 Followed a tournament.. Really slow, on the front 9.. 5 1/2 round.. Marshalls were actually slowing us down during the 1st two holes because the tournament was sooo slow!!

The course was in decent shape, for some reason they were hosing the front 9 greens down.. Good condition, they speed up on the back 9. Traps were nice, soft sand. Overall you still can't beat the deal for being a resident, will always come back to play Hansen..

Played today with miguelgolf2007. Fear, and billclark2594. 12:00 tee time, but they got us out 20 minutes early. No one in front of us until we got to hole #9. Finished in 4 hours - my fastest afternoon round ever at an L.A. City course. I figure the fast pace was due to the upcoming holiday and the ridiculous rate they now charge non-residents on Fridays.

Course was in nice shape, but the greens are very slow and a little bumpy. Looks like a golf course again after all the construction. Unfortunately no cart girl, so it is important in this heat to load up with liquids at the turn. Congrats to billclark2594 for shooting an even par 72 - watch out at the upcoming Simi Hills outing - he's playing!

Course is comming together nicely with the new irrigation and cart paths.I forgot they cut the greens longer in the summertime, thus was short on my first couple rolls. What fun it is to putt on the "dam" holes(#5,6,10 &11) when you forget to figure in the "dam" break!Good times!

Played 6/29 at 9:30 am. Finished at 3:10 pm....'nuff said. They simply pack too many players on the course. Otherwise, more interesting & challenging than the Sepulveda complex. Several elevation changes make it a tough walk. Course is in good shape. Some hard pan on the fairways, but mostly green. Greens are slow & spongy...give it a wack if you're putting uphill. Traps have poor sand and not fluffy. Still fun...enjoy!

played here 6/28. Easy course, that has some difficult holes if you're not long off the tee. Pace of play was excruciating. 5.5 hour round and I was the 9:08am group. the greens were soft and slow, but the fairways, bunkers, and rough were nice and consistent. the walk from the 11th green to the 12th tee is brutal, esp. in the summer heat. the walk from the 18th green back to the clubhouse is no joke either. Apply and reapply sunscreen often, or else you will get burned.

Marshall was no where in sight, except when I finished my round and was catching a ride back to the club house on the back of a cart....thanks marshall for just doing nothing except yelling at me to get off the cart....how about you make yourself useful and go regulate on the course to make it more enjoyable.

Played Friday afternoon. Overall course is in great condition. We got stuck behind a slow group. Luckily we were able to jump in front of them. Smooth sailing from there. Back to the course.... Teeboxes were okay, pretty level. Fairways were nice, some bare/dry spots but overall green. Roughs were okay... again forgiving. Traps were not fluffy. Greens were nice. Rolled pretty true. Overall, course is great and hope it keeps improving.

Went out today @10:30 as a twosome+one and finished under 4.5 hrs. Course is back to it's regular configuration with no temporary holes or rerouting. As munis go, I'd say this course is in nice shape right now. With a couple of exceptions (e.g. 10th whites and reds are sloped) most of the tee boxes are level with good coverage. Fairways are in good shape. Some do have strips of resodded areas crossing them where pipes were recently laid in underneath, but not a big problem. I ended up on a strip on one occasion and played it as ground under repair. The greens are much better than the last time I was here when is was lumpy and slow. They are smoothed out and rolled true with medium pace while still being soft/receptive to incoming shots. Bunkers were not fluffy (muni) but I thought they were generally well groomed, in good shape with firm but fair sand and no hard packed areas. It was warm, but not oppressively hot like last week. Good price, generally not tough to get on, and a decent pace. Good times.

Played Saturday early morning. Overall course is looking great and glad all the construction was completed. Teeboxes are nice. Fairways are in good condition. There are areas that are bare (from the construction and natural). Traps were good. Rough was forgiving. Greens were nice but slow. Nice upgrade!

Played today Saturday 6/14.. One of my favorite City courses.. got out at 6:36 am and finished in just under 4 1/2 hours.. The construction is complete and the fairways are as lush as of have seen them.. Tee boxes godd and the traps (at least on the front 9, since I spent so much time in them) were in good shape.. Soft sand.. The greens were on the slow side, really soft so they were holding shots.. Overall a good round..

Played on Friday 5/30/08, noon tee time w/TheBigDog, miguelgolf2007, & yoondaman316. First time playing with these GreensKeeper.org members. The course had every hole open and no major construction visible. Tee boxes were in average shape. Fairways in poor to average condition. There were lots of bare dirt areas on the fairways, especially where the new sprinker piping was installed. Off the fairway in the rough can be inconsistent, from bare dirt to patchy grass to 2"-3" high. Greens have a very spongy feeling when walking on them, approach shots land softly with deep pitch marks, but they are fairly smooth. Slow on the uphill, but very fast on the downhill putts. Pace of play was excellent as we completed our round in a little over 4 hours.

Well, I don't want to plagiarize, so I'll quote from my fellow GKer Nick about the greens, " Their greens had been aereated recently but were still VERY spungy and VERY SLOW! Bumpy would be an understatement."

I'm not quite sure if I saw any evidence of the greens being aerated, but the greens just felt so "spongy", felt like I was walking and putting on SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS. I'm not kidding....it seemed like I was just whacking the ball to get close to the hole. I couldn't find my easy tempo that I usually have when I'm putting because the lines would not hold. I had 4 to 6 footers where they would hold the line and others that would completely deviate from my intended target line. Overall, the course is in still undergoing some construction which is expected. The fairways seemed to be rolling fine with very minimal bare spots. Most of my lies I had were nice and lush, almost seemed like the ball was teed up for me. Bunkers which I happened to be in twice, seemed pretty consistent. I would rate the course at a 6.00, maybe once the construction is overwith they'll start rolling the greens to make them run smoother and faster.

Still alot of construction going on. 8th hole is closed. Greens still recovering from Ariation. Huge chipping pratice area. Should be a good play once the construction is done. As always with Muni's, no one repairs the tee boxes or greens, so they are spotty at best.

First time playing here. Their greens had been aereated recently but were still VERY spungy and VERY SLOW! Bumpy would be an understatement. You could putt the same 5 footer multiple times and depending on which bump it hit, you could miss 2 inches left or 2 inches right of the hole with the same stroke/speed/line.

This might be a silly question, but does anyone fix a ball mark or rake a trap on a city course?

That was the bad.....

The good was that this could be a great little course with proper care and maintanence. Hole #8 is currently closed, so you have a front 8 and a back 10.........They have a temporary hole to make up for #8 being closed later in your round that is excellent by temp hole standards. While the fairways are generally some of the widest you will find anywhere, there are plenty of mature trees that will keep you in trouble if you stray too far. The overly soft greens held a pitch or full shot as well as you will see anywhere if you came in high, but you could still bump and run OK if you chose to come in low.

Wow. Hansen Dam is looking VERY nice lately. Construction is just about finished. All new cart paths & all new irrigation system. You can already see the difference on the course. It's not as crowded and plays much smoother & quicker than other City courses such as Griffith Park or Rancho Park. And they are usually on time! Imagine that for a City course. And the best burger & fries around. Friendly staff. Check this course out if you haven't played it yet.

Played today, Wednesday @2:15. Not too busy -- got right on with a lot of room to spare. Tee boxes generally in nice shape. Fairways good, not lush, with a lot of roll. Greens were recently punched and sanded and are in the recovery phase -- slow, bumpy and waffled. Hence, the lack of foot traffic. If you are out for a practice round and discount the putting, it's worth a go. Got around in 3:45 hours. For the total experience, the greens are going to need a week to be decent and a couple or more to be good. They are still doing a fair amount of work, but it doesn't really get in the way. The par-3 7th hole is closed and offset by a temporary par -3 finishing hole.

Played today, April 12, 2008. The course was in good shape expect for the fairway on the 11th hole. Once they are done with construction it should be in great shape. The greens were in good shape and were rolling well. It was a little slow even for an 8:00am tee time. That's pretty much how it is there. Overall, it was a great day!

Played on Friday, February 22, 2008. The course [as others have already noted] is undergoing irrigation upgrades. Hole 2 was under the most severe distress. It was raining, so any disturbed ground was really a mud hole. Fortunately, this was the only really bad area. Greens were in great condition.

Played today.. Thank you Presidents day (for the day off), Had to pay the holiday rate.. it was only $31.. Construction zone, beware, if you don't mind all the workers and heavy equipment on the first 5 holes its not that bad.. For a muni the course (other than the construction) was not that bad, the tee boxes were in decent shape and the greens were surprisingly quick.. The fairways have always been suspect, but the course makes it up in the distance/rate.. We were behind a quick 3some so me and my buddy finished in just under 4 hours..

Wow, BIGDOGS review pretty much sums up my review. I also was finally able to play with BigDog and Rtewfik...I enjoyed playing with FEAR at "BigDog's Knollwood tournament" so it was fun playing with him again. We both seem to try to outdrive each other, if you've played with him his a very long ball hitter.

Well, there really isn't much to say about the course, the review below (BigDog's) was described exactly as to what the course conditions are at this time. It was my first time playing there and was pleasantly surprise at how nice of a track it is even with all the construction going on....the pace of play was great!

Played here on 2/15 with rtewfik, Fear, and h8bogeys. The course is still undergoing renovation to the cartpaths and irrigation system, but I knew that going in. The course was not overly crowded and we teed off right on time (if not a few minutes early).

The starter had temporary scorecards which actually showed the holes we would be playing. Hole #3 was closed, Hole #11 used the green to the left and a par 3 was added to the end, utilizing Hole #11's normal green. On hole #2, the tees were pushed pretty far forward so this par 5 played more like a par 4. The construction didn't really affect play much, though we did occasionally have to wait for construction vehicles to move. I actually enjoyed the temporary changes to the course. Normally I don't like ending on a par 3, but I made a 30 footer for a "routine" birdie, so no complaints this time. Plus, this added par 3 at the end has you finish right next to the parking lot instead of a quarter mile away. The alternate green for #11 made the hole a tad short for a par 4 (265 yards) as my drive ended up on the back fringe - definitely wait (as we did) for the green to clear before teeing off on this hole.

Of the 4 L.A. City courses in the San Fernando Valley, this course has the most elevation changes. Got a good workout pushing my Clicgear cart up some of the hills. The greens were okay, though I did experience some mystery breaks right at the cup. The fairways were in better condition than Woodley or Balboa/Encino. I was always hitting off of grass (on those rare occasions when I found myself in the fairway). I only visited one sand trap (hole #4) and there was plenty of dry sand, so I was able to hit a soft shot pretty close to the pin.

Had a fun time, it was great to finally play a round with h8bogeys. I shot my best score at this course and was able lower my handicap by a whopping 0.1 points.

Played out there on 1/23. Forcast was for rain but the sky was pretty clear.....until I got to the 15th hole. Started raining on the 16th hole and I ended up playing the last 3 holes in the rain. I should do that more often cause I ended up Par, Par, Birdie in the rain. The greens were in awsome condition and they made putting a dream. Finished with only 25 putts thanks to the greens.

Played course on 12/17 at around mid morning. Started at 11:45 and finished at around 3:45. Hole 14 was closed again and we had an extra hole after #18. I played with 2 absolutly hilarious Japanese guys that had me laughing the whole 18 holes. On #11 there is an alternate green to the left and the old green is now the new green for the extra hole after #18. I told both guys that they need to play the green to the left. They both said ok then proceeded to hit it straight for the old green. On their 2nd shot they both took aim and hit at the same time to the old #11 green right into the middle of a foursome that was just walking up to the green to put. After I picked myself off the ground and stopped laughing I told them again that they needed to play the green I was standing in the middle of. They both looked mortified at what they did, left their cart 50 yards out and SPRINTED for their balls shouting out I'M SO SORRY, I'M SO SORRY, I'M SO SORRY!!! Picked up their balls, sprinted back to where they hit from then took aim at me for laughing at them. Despite all of that I found that the course is getting into better shape. BUT............... "Man it still needs a lot of work". God bless us for being able to have opinions!!

I got to the course late to try and get 9 holes in before dark at the Super Twilight rate. I ended up getting there at 3:45 but got to the starter and got on at 3:55. The course was under major construction. It looked like they were cutting lanes for new concrete cart paths so make sure you hit well off the tee. The fairways were just okay. The greens were nice, at least as nice as I've seen since I'm new to this golf thing. They were really fast and putted pretty true. Had to get used to the speed since I'm not used to them (a couple of 3 putts and even a 4 putt). The fairways are wide which lets you swing pretty easy (although I only hit maybe 2 fairways that day). But I did get in 7 holes in that one hour of daylight that I did have. On my last hole (7), I hit a shot that I prayed was either near the green or in a bunker or else it was lost. Luckily it was a foot away from the green and I was able to chip and 2 putt for a bogey 4. After construction is complete, this should be a pretty good place to play although the fairways need a little work.

To comment on the previous review from "Fear"......you stated that "man does this course need some work".....What do you think all that construction is for? We are getting a new irrigation system put in to replace the severely outdated one we have. Many of you don't realize what a major improvement this will be for the course. Yes of course it is a bit of a pain for the golfers at times, but in response to you saying the trek from #11 to #13 is a "three day camel ride" What are you complaining about? You would still have to make that "camel ride" through #12 if it were open anyway. Considering the amount of work that is happening on that course right now, I think the accommodation to the golfers is great. There are still 18 holes open on any given day and for the people that complain about when that last par 3 is used as #18.....that was the original #18 anyway.

Played here on Tuesday and man does it need some work. They are doing some major construction over here and it is hectic. #11 has a temp green because #12 is closed so they have an extra hole after #18 that uses #11's old green. All I know is that it was a three day camel ride to go from #11 to #13. Tee boxes and fairways were is decent shape. Greens were alright for the most part. Except for the construction and losing a nice par 5 #12 and getting a small par 3 #19?? I had a great time there except for a overzelous marshall. He didn't like me for some reason that I have yet to determin. Hopefully the construction will be over soon and beware the old cranky marshall. Move your cart in the wrong direction and he will be all over you like you are an SSI check.

played today because most courses are being aerated, and have to say that the course was not that appealing. #11 has a temp. green and #13 is not being played. it's replaced with a extra hole after #18. greens and tee boxes weren't bad, but the fairways are for the most part thin. knollwood and simi hills much better options for the valley region and for the price.

As previously stated, greens were good, but everything else was just okay. When I played on 8/22/07, pace of play was very slow. My group ended up waiting 10+ minutes at each tee box waiting for the group in front of us to clear the area. It's not their fault either as they are waiting for the group on front of them to clear also. Overall, an okay course to put into play between the valley rotations.

"Great" ???? 7.51 rating ???? I fully admit, it's been quite a long time since I've played any muni golf - but "Great" ??? That is HARDLY an adjective I'd choose for Hansen Dam G.C. The fairways were "just O.K." (at best) - the greens are "recovering" from a recent punching (the putted balls were jumpin' and jivin' - and those in our group were wailin'!!) and were uncomfortably lumpy. The golf cart we were given was the equivalent of a 1973 AMC Gremlin - on it's last legs and pulled badly to the right - the "suspension" was shot and it died on us several times. There were bare-spots both in the fairway and in the rough. The rough itself was uneven. It was like groundskeepers would just haphazardly be mowing along...and then stop. Very spotty work. I have always tried to be fair when rating courses on Greenskeeper.org . If something deserves praise - I'll be the first one to post. If something needs to be fixed, I'll certainly mention it in a review. Most of the problems I had with the place are beyond anything the staff at Hansen Dam can take care of. The problem seems to be the players. Although there are ample trash cans throughout the course...I must have picked up 20 pieces of trach from various bunkers, fairways, tee-boxes, etc. I was in two bunkers all day...and while the quality of the sand was just fine (better than Goose Creek's!) - both times I had to hit out of a deep footprint. I don't think I've ever seen so many un-raked bunkers on one course in my 35-years of playing golf in Southern California!! Honestly, I fixed a minimum of FIVE deep ball marks on every one of the greens. A person could fix FIFTY if he wanted to...there'd be no problem finding that many.

You know, I guess it is what it is. Muni golf. I don't mean to sound snobbish...but "Great" is not a word I'd ever use to describe this track.

Good things?? Hmmm. Well...I guess the price for greens-fees was about right. And the bar has Stella Artois beer on tap...and it was cold.

I'd have to be awfully desperate to go back to Hansen Dam any time soon

Was heading over to Knollwood to meet a buddy to play, but got stuck in Los Tunas Canyon fire freeway stoppage and couldn't make the 3:20 tee time. When the traffic started filtering through about 1.25 hours later, I headed over to Hansen Dam and walked right on as a single, paired with a couple of guys who were self-admittedly a little drunk, bad golfers, but not the worst company. They needed tees, and I offered/gave them some of mine, and they gave me a new sleeve of balls as a thank you.
Pace was a little slow, but even. I putted out the 18th with the moon up and just enough light to read an 8-foot putt for par (left it short). Fairways were thicker than the last time I played here. Last time they were firmer with a lot of roll, this time less roll but better lies. The greens looked like they may have been punched in the not-to-distant past. They were a touch slower and not as smooth as I recall, but they generally seemed to roll pretty true and the missed putts were mostly pilot errror. It's a good solid muni with a decent amount of variety to the holes at a good price. Generally easier than a lot of courses to get out on.

Great course. One of the most underated courses around! You can pretty much get out here & Woodley Lakes without a tee time. Even on weekends the wait isn't bad compared to many other local courses. Used to be a member of the Men's Club here. Don't bother joining here! Switched to Woodley's club. Much, much. much better. Far more organized. No constant b$tch ing & complaining in this club. Great lunch buffet at Hansen Dam though! Clubhouse/bar much better at Hansen Dam. Woodley's clubhouse/bar is a major RIP OFF!

Interesting course. Got some up & downs, both wide and narrow fairways. Played for about 4.5 hours on a weekday morning, which is alright. The only complain that I would have is that they water the fairway during our playing time. Almost every hole has some sprinklers on, and some of them just happen to be in the middle of the fairway so that it is really inconvenient if the ball landed in the sprinkled area. Not even mentioning some spots are really muddy because of the water. But over all the course is not bad for $22 walking price. Would certainly go there again.

Played sunday 5/20/07. Started at 7:47 a.m. and finished 4.5 hours later. Course in great condition tees to greens.
This is a fun course to play. Each hole has its own identity.

Played on Sunday 5/20 at 7:40 a.m. Course is in excellent condition. Kudos to the superintendint and maintenance crew!!

Greens are in fantastic shape. Best Muni greens in LA County. Rolled true, fast, minimal ball mark damage. It was a very damo morning, but the greens showed no signs of running slow or bumpy.

Fairways are in remarkably good shape. You would hardly notice that the course is located next to a DAM, and in a flood basin. A tad soggy in the morning, but hardly any bare areas, consistant coverage with consistant grass.

Rough was good. It could have been more challanging, but otherwise in good condition.

Traps played very true. Sand was consistant throughout the course. Drained very well.

Tee Boxes in great condition. Lush, level, even.

Truly an enjoyable round. I played well, shot 1 under my index, but I can't remember having a more enjoyable round. Fun layout, not too long, but not too short, lots of elevation changes, especially on the back 9. Staff is very friendly, from the starter, to the guy in the proshop, to the waitress and cook in the resteraunt, to the women running the snack shack.

Hansen gets overlooked because Rancho and the Griffifth park courses get more play, and its not in the greatest neighborhood. But the conditions were outstanding for a municipal course. Well worth the value at $28.50 Greens fee, and $5 for a "Bag Boy" hand cart. Very nice course to walk.

This is my home course and I can be fussy.
The tees are generally level and in good shape. The 4th tee is smallish and therefore has much divot damage as does the 15th, both par threes.
Overall, fairways are good but due to a poor irrigation system (promised to be replaced for many years and finally may happen this year) there are wet spots and severly dry and barren areas. If you are accurate, though, you can work this to your advantage.
Greens have recently been punched and are in second- third week of growth. Due to overwatering they are soft and bumpy and slowly or poorly struck putts will wander.
I must give the maintainance crew and super, a high 5 for the effort they have put into the course making it playable even though they have had the worst conditions of any city course to work under (irrigation).
My hope is that the crew will continue to work hard and return the greens to the firm, fast and smooth condition they were in before the airation.
The part of the course that really gets my goat is the bunkers. The crew doesn't rake them in the morning and when they finally do they don't smooth them, they just rough up the surface (by hand rake) leaving all of the previous days unraked footprints and divots to be traversed by the next poor sap who happens to find that part of the moon.
All in all, even with the airation of the greens Hansen Dam is a fun and challanging muny at a easy price.

Played on 4/1/07, and course was in good shape. Smooth greens and lush fairways. Hansen Dam is a fair test of golf, especially for a City course. Good mix of short, long holes. Not terribly difficult - there is enough room off the tee and the bunkers are shallow. However, when the greens are smooth as they were today, it can be tricky to read the subtle breaks and judge the effect of the nearby dam. Good value!

Played Hansen Dam for the first time as a two-some today, Wednesday, 2/14, with a 12:00 start. Wide open for the first holes until we caught up to the group in front at the 4th hole. Long back up at the 5th tee and crept along through 9th. Sped up to a good even pace after that so it was a 5-hr round. Generally breezy, gusty conditions that factored into some of the shots and clubs selection. The dry fairways with decent coverage and a lot of roll are generally on the wide side, so the course has an open feel to it. Usually a reasonable shot at minimizing damage if you get off line. Most of the course is on the flat side, but there are a few holes with some altitude changes and the second shot on the par-4 10th is straight uphill. Overall, I thought the greens were in very good shape for a public course and I was generally impressed with the condition of the tee boxes as well -- mostly very level and good coverage. I definitely recommend it among the public/lower cost tracks as worth a look.

Played here on Friday, January 26. Tees and greens in great condition. Fairways and rough were dormant kikuyu and bermuda grass. I saw several areas of rough where maintenance crews were watering, but fairways were nice and dry allowing shots to seemingly run forever. Greens were soft, smooth and generally free of ball marks. It took the usual five hours to complete the round.

Play 11/25/06. First time playing this course. Long and wide fairways. You won't have much problems with your driver even you have slice or hock shots. Very forgiving golf course. 10th hole is short 300 yds par 4 hole but green is on a up-hill. Even you hit a nice drive, your ball might roll down back to 10 yds mark. Careful how you hit it and take up an extra club to reach the green. Fairways are good and greens are above average. Pretty long course - 6717 yds. For $40.50 with carts, this is good course to visit once a while. Not much challenging holes... kind of plain course.

Played here on Oct. 6th. Pace of play was typically slow, but not as bad as I have seen it; the round lasted about 5 to 5 1/2 hours. We were called to the tee about 10 minutes earlier than our 10:00 tee time. Greens were in nice shape, rolled true and were virtually free of excessive ball marks. Fairways had some wet spots (roped off, for the most part), probably due to irrigation not being dialed back enough for the recent cooler weather. Having visited a couple of sand traps it was nice to note newer, lighter sand (12 and 13 greenside). Rough was green, lush and mowed with most of my drives sitting up nicely in that bermuda/kikuyu mix.

This was the first time I played Hansen Dam. Good overall course. My foursome & I will definately be back. The middle of some of the fairways were alittle brown. This summer was pretty bad heat wise so it may go with the territory. Two things bothered me: 1) The credit card machine was down & they didn't bother to tell anyone until they got to the window (no signs posted) & 2) The gree fees are paid at the starters window & then you have to go around to the back to pay for the cart seperately. So we had to scramble for cash 2 times for 1 round. Good course all in all.

Played here today and that story of two golf courses holds true.

While I wasnt impressed with the front 9 I loved the back 9. Great views and I live a course with elevation changes.

Greens were in great shape, these guys really do a good job fixing them up.

Snack shack is pricey but its a short walk from the 4th tee to the 7-11 on the corner :).

Played at 11am, finished at 5:30. No backups, the place was empty, no one in front, no one behind me so I took extra shots and spent lots of time practicing my putting on each green.

Definetly going here for a quick 9 holes on my short play days.

This is the tail of two golf courses! Front side is a nice 9 holes, some elevation changes but rather ho hum! The back 9 holes has character, better views and some water. This course is 1 mile from my work, so 9-12 holes before heading back on the 405 is a great way to spend a few hours! Great workers, greens need some rolling and less water! The usual unfixed ball marks and unreplaced divots, but hey I have had these at 4 star courses? Remember folks this is a gentlemans/ladies game, leave the course in better shape that you had it!

i usually like the greens here, but today, it felt like i was putting on fairway. Greens are slow, slow, and slow. The ball doesnt even break because the grass is so long. The city is probably keeping it long due to the hot weather. Since its so hot, where is the cart girl? No one out there! Not even any coolers! How is someone going to survive in the heat? I ran out of water on the 12 hole. I was about to faint after 18. My bad for walking.

Played 5/21, off at 6am and already the 12th group off. Play was surprisingly reasonable at about 4.5 hours. Greens were very slow at first and became faster towards the end, needs to be mowed shorter I think. Tee box grass was "mushy", not watered down, just the grass was spongy. I've played 3 of the 4 SFV city courses and they've all been similar....definitely worth the price.

PLayed 3-4 times in the past week. Firstly not to stereotype or to be rude, but what is with most of these groups of "asian" golfers??? I know this is already bad. As most that I have played with were great fun, but this past week the knuckleheads were out. 3 seperate rants..... First rant- This is after my last round there Saturday. I was waiting in line to ask the starter if anyone had turned in my wool cap. So I'm next. The lady in front of me pays, finishes up after about 5 minutes of who knows what.... and I take a step and drop my cell phone about a foot in front of me. I take a step up and grab it and this asian guy jumped in front of me in the line, money in hand and handed to the starter. I loudly said "are you kidding me, you're just going to jump in front of me that way? ". Noone noticed. Well fine whatever, he's in a hurry to pay for his supertwilight and get first on the list or whatever. But here come 7 of his buddies, all jumping in front of me. Now I love the starters at Hansen but cmon. I even tried to ask a question by saying to him- Hey I just want to know if anyone... he said "hold on hold on." WTF??? Okay so that was rude- Rant 2 entails me playing as a single behind a 4 some of very bad asian golfers. I was off the greens before the first was teed off on the next hole. I purposely would go to make eye contact to ask if I could play through since there were only 5 holes open in front of them. Not once did they aknowledge me. So at number 4, they were on their way to the green, I decided to skip and play number 5. I finished number 5 and went back to number 4 where they were still putting. I flew by them on the next tee box. I just can't believe they didn't aknowledge me. This was Saturday also. Crazy. Well rant 3 is the worst of all. During the week both wednesday and thursday the group in front of me were asians. Now these dudes smoked liked crazy and though nothing of throwing their butts on the green. Whereever they were were butts all around. I watched them throw them in front of me. On the par 3s where I could see in front of them same exact thing. At least 1 smoker throwing a butt on the green. Some were left right by the hole!!!! Now like I said didn't mean to single out the Asian golfers at Hansen, but last week that's what it was. They have really invaded the course, and aren't repecting it, and that's the problem I have. Course is in decent enough shape. The greens are fast for a muni, and fairly firm. They are replacing the sand in most of the bunkers so lots of plugged lies for now, but the end result will be worth it. Definitely feels like beach sand. Greens stay pretty true in the mornings, but in the afternoons get fairly bumpy. Overall its in pretty good shape, with good pace. Not one of my rounds was over 5 hours, with 2 on Saturday in the rain being played in under 4 hours each round. This is my favorite LA city course.

I also hate their cart policy. You get penalized if you golf as a single. Basically they do a per cart fee. If you are by yoruself you pay the full 24 and get 5 bucks back. If you play not at twilight. Thats BS. Also they juice the carts only long enough to play 1 round. I didn't know this till my cart ran out of juice on the 3rd hole of the 2nd round. The guy was nice enough to charge me the twilight rate in the pouring rain, but still that's ridiculous! No wonder I normally walk. Total cost breakdown for playing 2 rounds on Saturday- 28.50 for each round so $57 there, 12 for the cart the first round (I split with the guys I played with), and 16 for the second. Thats 85 dollars at a muni!

Played Friday 2/17/06. Walked on and got out in 5 min. Course in OK condition. Greens muni fast, fairways OK, ruff needs work. Played behind k women, who were behind 3 men that were two and half holes behind!!! Only saw the marshal at the turn and at 18, what a joke. What ever happend to "keep up with the group in front of you?" These guys held the hole course and could care less. It must be nice to go up to your ball and not have to stand around for 5 minutes. Shame on you three and the course.

Played on 11/25 the Friday after Turkey Day and actually walked on and only had to wait $15 min. for a twosome. So the day started out excellent. Some spots on the fairways were overwatered though. It was only my third time on the course, but according to one of the guys playing it who plays it regularly it was in the best condition he has ever seen. I will be playing again here, and it was a overall a good time had.

played nearly 5 1/2 hr round today. too many people think too highly of themselves on this course - thinking they can drive a green, hold everyone up, then hit 175 yds. At least I know I can't- you can still play fast and be a high handicap. Tee boxes still suck - divoted, uneven. Greens need heavy duty rolling and cutting. Course super needs to go out and check his crew's handiwork. Pretty ridiculous and bumpy even for a muni. Fairways deserve credit though. Greens were so bad that I would think twice about playing here next week

Played Thursday. Arrived at 12:21 was teed off by 12:24. Played in under 4.5 hours. Still had a bit of waiting, especially towards the back half, but still reasonable pace of play.

Course was in normal condition. Still don't get why every time I play the course the holes feel small, but at least one of the teaching pros I played with today felt the same way when he plays the course. I watched him shoot 5 or 6 under for the round, with 4 birds and an eagle on the back. Guess the hole isn't as small as it seems.

Played 9/9. Easy to get out as a single at 9 am on a Friday morning. Always a nice track to work on the stray driver but I was very dissapointed with the marshmallow greens. Put away the ProV's because you could hit low top flites into these things and they'll still hold. Also makes putting a chore when you have to make knee high pendulum swings just to hit a 25 footer. PLEASE CUT YOUR GREENS AND STOP OVERWATERING THEM!

A great value for a super twilight rate of just 7 bucks. Clearly not in as good of condition as Brookside or San Dimas Canyon whose ratings show this course as comparable with them.
Starter remains in a good mood as long as you are very nice to him, but be prepared to try to igmnore him if he was not treated just right by players a half hour ago!

Played twilight on May 6th. Course was good. Greens were being aerated and made it impossible to putt. Holes 10 and11 had really patchy fairways. Although, the longer holes were in very good condition. Overall, it was worth the money to play the course. One tip - don't get into the trees (trees are very lush and will knock your ball down if you're not accurate with your shots).

Played on 04/22/05. Greens were in their usual great shape for a muni; a little bumpy but soft and lush. Only no. 18 had any significant ball marks, but they were fresh and were easily repaired. Fairways were green and smooth, with only a couple areas that were under or needed repair. The sand was soft and free of footprints. Problems: wet area in middle of #6 fairway, low-hanging dead branches on right side of #8 fairway, sparse turf along left side of #s 12 and 13. Great value if you can walk.

I played HD today for the first time. I was able to get on immediately as a single. Good driving range. No putting green open. The fairways are at best fair. The greens are beautiful for a muni, and are really soft so the ball sticks where it hits for the most part. The front nine is straightforward, and the back nine has 2 mickey-mouse holes with huge straight uphill shots. The clubhouse staff was great. All-in-all it's worth it, except for one thing: The greenskeeping staff are incredibly disrespectful. Not by saying things, but on several occasions all through the day the crew would be in the way. Hole 1, we're on the tee and 2 if them drive out into the middle of the landing are and start working without even paying attention to the fact that we were getting ready to hit. Hole 2, a guy is up there fixing pitch marks on the green and we can't even get his attention to let him know we're hitting. Hole 4, we get ready to play to our approach shots, and a guy hooks up a hose and starts watering the green as if no one is even on the course. They would drive right by you while you're putting and basically had no sense of courtesy. It was a huge distraction. Otherwise it is a fun little course.

Played on 4/8. Greens are rolling very nice, and holding the ball well. This was the first time I had played Hansen. The course set up was mediocre. The front was straight forward. The back was much better, though the goofy uphill shots on 10 and 16 detracted from the course.

Hit it up till the aerated courses heal. Otherwise sort of a let down.

I agree it is a very good course for the money. Played 12/24, went out around 12:30. The starter gave us the twilight rate of $17.00, even though it didn't start until 1:00. Took 2 1/2 hrs to play the front. Freed up on the back and got in 17.
Fairways are in fair shape, not bad. Greens are in very good shape for a muni. (Not close to Robinson Ranch or Lost Canyons). Not real fast and they are all pretty flat. Most putts are just straight and firm.
Nice layout, not real hard, pretty wide open.
Definitely worth the $$.

Very strange course. Lots of fun to play because of the views and some good long par 4's. The greens here are as good if not better than some of the best courses, including Robinson and Los Canyons, but the fairways are brittle and bare. If they put some money into this course, which rumor has it they may, it could be a gem for a muni.

Decent pace of play for sat am-under 4:45min. Course is in good shape. Greens are consistent, however everytime I play here the holes look small. Almost every hole has a bit of cave into the hole. Maybe its just me though.

Rough and fairways and sand are all normal for this course. The tee boxes are beat up, but working on them. Overall a very consistent effort throughout.

Played course on 8/30 was in good shape, but had your usual muni ball marks on the green with some thin spots on the fairways, but it has some fun holes with a good layout.

My favorite course. When the wind howls the back becomes really challenging. It does make up for the short 10th and 11th holes. Good Staff and decent breakfast.

Calld last night and got a 9:18 tee time for today (Saturday). Round took over 5 hours, waited on every hole. Greens were in good condition but fairways had many large dead blotches. Tenth and eleventh holes are less than 300 yards and look like they are part of the driving range.

Played here on Saturday 5/15/04. Called at 7am to see how it looked for a single and the starter actually gave me a time!! 8:18am!! I arrived at 8am and he actually bumped me up and got me out right away. That's unheard of in LA county at a public course at this price. As a bonus, the course played great! The greens held wonderfully with few ballmarks and the fairways were fine. Had a great round...i'll be back.

The best L.A. City course to play by far. It's in great shape right now. The greens haven't been this nice in a long time. I walked up on a Friday morning with a twosome. We had to wait a while but the Starter was great and actually walked into the clubhouse to find us because we couldn't hear our names being called. The girl in the clubhouse was awesome too. The workers from other L.A. City courses should go to Hansen Dam and learn how to treat customers. Tee boxes & sand bunkers need a little help but overall this a a great public course.

I REALLY ENJOYED PLAYING THIS COURSE. THE PERSONNEL THERE ARE VERY ACCOMADATING. I WALKED UP WITH NO RESERVATIONS (7:30 AM) AS A SINGLE AND WAS IMMEDIATELY PLACED IN A GROUP. THE COURSE LOOKS WELL MAINTAINED FOR AN LA CITY COURSE. THE FAIRWAYS AND ROUGHS ARE GROOMED NICELY. THE GREENS WHERE IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION, IT REALLY SURPRISED ME BECAUSE I HAVE READY DIFFERENT COMMENTS ABOUT OTHER CITY COURSES. THE ONLY IMPROVEMENT I SEE IS BETTER SAND FOR THE SAND TRAPS. SINCE IT MAY HAVE BEEN SHIPPED IN FROM ONE OF THE LA BEACHES, I FULLY UNDERSTAND WHY THE QUALITY OF SAND WAS SO POOR AND THIN. THE PACE PLAYED GOOD FOR A WEEK DAY SINCE THERE WHERE QUIT A NUMBER OF WALKERS ON THE COURSE. I WOULD PLAY THIS COURSE AGAIN.

I played last Thursday early in about 4:15. The course was in typical winter condition with lots of tight lies on the fairways. The greens were generally in good shape. A couple of weeks of 80 degree weather would make everything fine.

Had an 8:12 time Sunday morning. Showed up around 7:45 and noticed no one was on the course and lot's of cars heading out. Outside temp reading from the car was showing a balmy 47 degrees. Got to the starters window and there was a sign that said the course was closed because of "Frozen Greens" and would stay that way until at least 9:30am. Not a sign of frost any where and the practice greens were just fine. I understand the need to protect the integrity of the course and not to allow play when a signiifcant amount of damage can occur, BUT......it was close to 50 degrees!! Thumbs down to the crew at Hansen.

Wednesday afternoon round took over 5 1/2 hours. I will say that it was a consistent 5 1/2 hours. Not rush then wait.

The course itself is in decent shape. The greens are in the best shape I've seen them. They are faster than normal for here. The greens are quirky though, there were a couple of putts that broke one way for some of us, and the opposite for someone else. Even with the greens in good shape, I hate putting at this place.

The rest was average. Fairways were acceptable, tee boxes were flat, but some thin areas. The sand was not very consistent. Hard as a rock in one area of a bunker, soft in another.

Played 10/23. Greens are in very good shape after aerification about 6 weeks ago. A couple of the greens are a little soft so you get some footrprint problems, but overall, they are the best I've seen in a while. The fairways are spotty. Some are green with some decent grass on them. Others have some bare or thin spots. Overall, a good value.

VERY DISAPOINTED , THEY RECENTLY RAISED THE PRICES ON CITY COURSES, AND THEY ARE IN THE WORST SHAPE I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS , WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING ?

I don't know what those last two guys are talking about. 6 hour rounds at Hansen Dam? Did you play on a Sunday at 2:00 when it's busy everywhere? And how can you say Griffith Park & Rancho are better? They are 3 times as busy. And they are not in any better shape. Especially Rancho. Plus those two courses have very rude starters (except the early morning guy at Griffith). If you ever need a marshal at Griffith Park you need to call the snack bar. Hansen Dam may not be in tip top shape but it is one of the best city courses for the money.

This is just one of LA's muni's, but there are many others that are much better. For instance Rancho and the Griffith Park courses blow this away. I played here because I'd heard a lot of hype, but I was definately dissapointed. Bottom line, if your're gong to play the 5-6 hour round at a LA muni, you might as well play on a good course.

I played Hansen Dam two weekends ago and it was the worst golf experience that I have had in a long time. The starter was rude and threatened to "sell" my tee time to another group and once we got on the course it was backed up from the second tee on. The round took over 6 hours. This may be a decent course, but the overall experience is horrible.

I played this course for the first time, Fri. afternoon,4/24/03. Play was alittle slow initially but then even out by the 11th hole. The fairways were a bit thin but the putting green were running moderately fast with some inconsistencies. Nice elevation changes and a few challenges that are not noted on the card.

Got out to Hansen Dam this morning by 7:45 AM this morning as a single. Teed off by 8 AM. The fairways were running pretty well and the greens were in great shape. They were rolling true and medium fast. They made the wide open layout more appealing by having to play closer attention to my short game. I shot an 86 that should have been an 82 without the 3 holes where I 3 putted. Yes, believe it or not this is how good the greens were rolling. I hear they'll be punched near the end of the month so enjoy soon.

Played Hansen Dam this am, and the greens have just been punched, with lots of plugs lying on the apron. I'd give it a week or two to smooth out.

An interesting municipal course with elevation changes, elevated tees and greens.
In fairly good condition when I played and the pace was great (4 hours for a foursome)
for a weekend morning. Fairly open, so you can't get into too much trouble here. The golf shop (John Wells) is excellent.

Played 2/2. Agree with comments by eholmquist. Would add that the greens had just been cut very short. They were mostly smooth and the fastest I'd ever seen at Hansen. Fairways are very thin in spots, but overall a good value.

This course is heavily played (therefore, can be slow) and is always in just fair condition. Let's face it, it's an LA City course. But the great thing about this course is that it's fairly long and wide open, so if you're working on your long game it's a really safe place to air the ball out without too much trouble. It also has a few really interesting holes. Played yesterday and fairways were a little dry in spots and the greens were a little bumpy, but for the price it's still a bargain.

This is a good municipal course that usually plays pretty quick. When I played in early December, there was a temporary tee on #1. They also had the fairway torn up on #4 which is a par 3 so it doesn't matter too much. The greens were in good shape.
