Had the rare opportunity to be invited to play Wilshire Country Club. I grew up in Southern California always wanting to play this course from my high school golf days. As it turns out it was a light rainy day on freshly aerated greens but none the less a great time. Thank you Jeremy and Scott of Golfmoose for inviting myself and Ringworld out to play. The first thing we did was load up our carts to go hit range balls. It’s a limited flight range, irons only, but it got the job done as far as getting loose. Back at the clubhouse before teeing off we were surprised to find out that golf carts are only allowed for seniors or those with issues that prevent walking. At Wilshire Country Club you are required to walk and take a caddie (one per twosome). As far as the course, fantastic track. They completed a turf reduction/fairways and bunker renovation approximately one year ago according to our caddie. Course was very beautiful and I was amazed that despite being in the heart of Hollywood, it felt quiet and mostly secluded. It’s a pretty open course from the tee but bunkers are looming on all holes in strategic positions. Especially greenside. I found my fair share and also found my fair share of large trees because despite ample room to hit the fairway, I had a case of the pull hooks. With the turf reduction, the rough has essentially been eliminated and from what I understand it was pretty long. Instead was replaced by desert landscape but I have to say it frames the holes nicely. On the greens, they are pretty tough with some severe undulations but given they were probably half their speed due to the recent aeration I can only imagine how tormenting they can be. With the recent aeration my course playing condition rating is going to be lower than its norm but had the greens been in their typical immaculate self, the course would be getting a rating somewhere in the low 9’s. Overall it was still in great shape, with firm bermunda fairways not quite as lush as they are still coming out of dormancy but excellent to hit off, tee boxes and bunkers all perfect. Just a great golf experience and even a celebrity sighting of Aaron Rogers of the Green Bay Packers teeing it up. Being an exclusive country club in Hollywood bet not a day goes by without a high profile celebrity rolling in for a round.
