Played the Blacks (6578/72.4/134) with GK Guru's Ron, John & Bob in 4H, 20M. Overcast on the front, we played much of the back in sprinkles. The over seeded tees were mostly lush with many near immaculate. Only the par 3's had a decent amount of divot damage. The over seeded fairways were lush and good to play from. The dormant primary Bermuda rough had good coverage and was generally mowed down, usually easy to find your ball. The over seeded rough around the greens was very lush. The numerous areas of native rough was unplayable, calf deep where the ball just disappeared, almost a sure lost ball. The plentiful sand traps were well maintained. Almost every green is severely raised. They are over seeded but look thin and were visually unappealing. However, they putted MUCH better than they looked. Firm, smooth & medium fast speed. Chipping was a challenge, even nice high lobs would roll out. Many greens had places where there could be almost unplayable pin positions. This is a challenging layout in good to excellent condition overall. Typical Pete Dye design. There are numerous mounds and bunkers with visually intimidating sight lines on almost every hole. Many holes with forced carries over huge bunkers, waste areas or lakes. Even though the course is basically flat, you almost never have a level lie after your tee shot because of all the mounds/moguls. Overall, I enjoyed the layout and the conditions were very good to excellent. The customer service was top notch from the Pro Shop to the Starter to the cart attendants. Had lunch between rounds, the Turkey Burger (Very good) and the service was excellent. Recommended.

Played the Dunes Course Sat. 10/28 at 1:12pm fresh from overseeding with a couple from Edmonton, complaining how hot the balmy 95 degree weather was. The Dunes course is considered the weakest of the 5 public PGA West/La Quinta resort courses, and is the least played probably because holes 4-9 play through a wash and homes, and is not as scenic as the others. The positive is that you usually can find a good deal (Cost was $59 from Teeoff.com) This is a classic Pete Dye course, if you love his designs, you will love the course, if you don't, you will walk away hating it. Make no mistake this course is as tough if not tougher than the others. #17 is as tough as a par 4 you will find anywhere. Service was top notch from bag drop to check in,to the starter. Saw the cart girl 3 times. Sight negative is that once you start your round you do not pass the clubhouse until you are done. The course was in great shape, tee boxes level, not a bad lie in the fairway. Rough was moderate length, and sticky, flyer lies were the norm if your ball ended up off the fairway. This is what makes this course so difficult, as although the yardage of 6100 yards from the whites (slope 128), the greens for the most part are the size of your thumbnail. You could be 15 feet from the hole and be in the long rough. Anything but a short iron approach from the fairway will run through the green. The greens itself are on the soft/spongy side (again probably if they were fast no shot would hold). Mostly the greens play slower than other desert courses, but they roll true. Although you have within a 10 mile radius at least 15 great courses to choose from, the Dunes is a great test of your golf game, and although not on the must have to play list, if you are looking for a solid test of golf, I would definitely recommend.

Played the Dunes course Sunday 4/23 as a twosome with a buddy, 8:30 AM tee time. We played the silver/whites in warm (mid 90's) sunny light winds. We played in 3:50 (could of been less with a threesome in front of us who was nice to ask if we wanted to play through, but it was great weather so we decided to take our time.

The Dunes is a Pete dye course that doesn't get much respect, as parts of the course plays through a wash before finishing with the final 4 holes close to the Santa Rosa Mountain. This is a typical Pete Dye course though, small raised greens, with drop offs and mounding around. Accuracy is key here, and les than driver is the play off of many holes. They have "softened" the course somewhat in taking out quite a bit of elephant grass, that used to eat your ball just off some fairways, but now is primary rough.

The course is in nice shape. The tees were lush, and level. The fairways were fairly lush. The rough is lush, and is fair but penalizing as the ball tends to sit down in it.

At one time the 17th hole was rated the hardest par 4 in Southern California. If it still isn't it still ranks right up there.

The small greens definitely are undulated, but the speed is a tad slower than say Silverrock, and although some seem a little thin, they roll true. are almost completely recovered from their spring aeration. Shots from the fairway hold, but approaches from the rough have a tendency to roll off the greens., but they held full shots well and putted fairly smooth and medium fast. The traps were decently maintained, and the ones I was in (expecially greenside), had plenty of sand.

The customer service was excellent from both the Pro Shop & the Starter. Drink cart gal was very pleasant and around numerous times. Free range balls included with your round, and a great practice area, with grass tees, bunker and chipping practice area. There is a putting green near the first hole, in addition the carts, have a GPS.. Of all the La Quinta/PGA west courses, the Dunes is considered a step child (especially to the stadium). I think that is due more to the layout of the course through a wash and some housing close to some of the fairways. The course is just as challenging as any of the other more advertised courses in the Palm Springs area, and do recommend you consider it when in the La Quinta/ Coachella Valley area.

Played Sunday 1/15, sorry for the late review. I really like this course. paid $59 through their website, felt it was fairly priced for peak season on a MLK weekend Sunday. Overall, course is in good to very good condition. Teeboxes were in pretty good shape, always level and fairly lush. some divot damage, but overall can't complain. Fairways were very nice, always had a great lie. Rough wasn't too penal, but there were a few thick spots, if you were way off the fairway, you were in dormant bermuda. Bunkers were in pretty good shape, especially due to a lot of recent rain. Greens were a little on the firm side and they had a "grainy" look to them, like they were a bald guy with thinning hair, but they putted pretty well and held their line, just didn't look perfect.

Overall, I like this course. Lots of cool water features and some tough holes. Good value for this time of year, as well.

Played here Wednesday morning for our last round in the desert. (our bud lives on the 9th hole) Course in great shape, they were doing some over seeding but nothing to bother you. Had an early morning tee time and the course was mostly empty, wind came up and it made you shot making a little more difficult. All in all, a great time. Just love to play on courses that actually have sand in the bunkers.

Played on Nov 1. Course was in good shape considering they just came off overseeding on Oct 20. Rough was reasonable and the greens were in pretty good shape. Cart path golf so play was a little slow but I finished in about 4 1/2 hours. We had to wait on just about every tee but not long. First time that I have played this course but I've played the Mountain course several times and enjoyed it so I thought I'd try it out. This one more straight forward. Not much shade around the course so playing on "cooler" days is advised. Typical Pete Dye layout with raised greens and valleys off of the fairways. More water than I expected for a "Dunes" course. Overall an enjoyable round.

Played on Sun. 10/24. The course just reopened after the change over to winter conditions. Cart path only due to the aforementioned. Unfortunately this lent to a slow round (about 4:45). I will say the marshall was doing all he could to speed up play, but cart path only just slows things down. Fairways had great coverage, but were still shaggy. Greens were smooth but were definitely on the slow side. the above conditions should correct itself within the next couple of weeks, and the course will be in immaculate shape. Rough was penal but fair, depending on the luck of the draw could have a lie where getting it out into the fairway might be a challenge, or have the ball sitting up quite nicely.

As for the course itself, it is a typical Pete Dye design, with raised greens, steep falloff areas around the greens, and pot bunkers in just the right places. the course is not long but you must be very accurate here as wayward shots are definitely penalized in long rough/unplayable lies.

Service was excellent from the bag drop /check in to the starter. A nice option for a challenging round in the La Quinta area

Played the morning of 6/11/16. The course is in excellent condition, very little to point out as any issues. The tees were excellent and the fairways were great as well as the rough. The greens were spotted in color as the bermuda grows in but they rolled excellently and were pretty quick. The service is excellent at this facility as well as offering a full locker room including showers if needed.
