I played the Mountain course today for the first time. Just about a year ago, I played the Dunes course and was less than impressed. I’ve heard from many that the Mountain course is more appealing so I decided to give it a try. Check in was easy but I was disappointed that they didn’t have logo balls for the Mountain course. Hopefully they will in the future so I can fill the space in my display. The range had complimentary balls and the carts were nice with GPS and water bottles in the coolers. The fairways were beautifully green with no bare or wet spots. The turf was still too thin for me to call it lush but it was in great condition. The tee boxes were also in good shape. I was in a few bunkers. The sand was only a thin layer but clean and raked. All the rough was dormant and cut very short. There were not too many bare spots, but of course I did find those few. The greens were firm and somewhat slow but smooth and free of ball marks. The Mountain’s front 9 is intertwined with the Dune’s back nine all in view of the clubhouse. Holes 10-13 run in between homes and weren’t very memorable (except for 13 which I birdied!). The scenery changes dramatically on 14-17. These holes run through the rocky mountains. I think #14 is one of the most beautiful golf holes I’ve played. POP was good at 4 hrs. This is a fun course and definitely worth playing if you haven’t already.

It was a warm 100 degree afternoon and the place was empty. Dropped off our bags at the bagdrop and was promptly picked up. Proceeded to the proshop to checkin. We were told there was hardly anyone on the course and it is pretty open. Given this was our 2nd round for the day, we opted for just playing 9 and we were given the option of playing the back instead. As most people know, the back 9 is where the gravy is.

We didn't use the driving range but that is available to warm up for all patrons. Off we go to 10. Carts have gps, ice cooler with ice but no water. No bev carts either as there wasn't enough customers to warrant one i guess.

Course conditions were good. Tee to green lush with some areas browning but still decent to hit from. Greens were firm but hold shots. Some have a few ball marks left by previous players.

Finished in under 90 mins for 9 holes and that included several photo ops. Enjoyable round and kudos to all staff at the facility.

Rode the Blacks (6666/72.9/135) with Shane, Mike and Greg in 4H, 15M using Forelinx. The weather was sunny, clear, windy and around 90. The tees were mostly lush and nice to play from. Only the Black tee on #7 needed work. The fairways were lush and nice to play from. The over seeded rough around the greens was very lush. The primary rough was mostly lush, good coverage and usually mowed down, you could easily find your ball. The native rough is an almost sure lost ball. The sand traps were very well maintained with good quality sand. Other than large waste bunkers, most of the sand traps here are relatively small but there are a lot of them. The greens putted medium fast and they were smooth/firm. Few ball marks due to the firmness. The customer service was exceptional from everyone encountered. As usual for this course. Cart gal around numerous times and the Marshall was out patrolling. Nice GPS on the carts that come with complementary bottled water. All grass range included with your fee, Definitely Recommended.

Day Two of our annual desert trip landed us out at La Quinta Resort's Mountain course - a first for me. I've always heard a lot of fun things about this course, and while I wasn't super impressed on the front nine, the back nine was absolutely stunning.

We were advised before the round that the course had only recently come out of re-seeding and was taking a bit longer to green up, thus leading to the dreaded Cart Path Only situation. And while the front nine looked a little more yellow than green in many parts of the course, the back nine was very lush and just visually spectacular crammed up next to the mountains and their jutting rock walls. Super cool.

Despite the lack of verdant color on the fairways, the lies were still very good throughout the day so there's no reason to complain there. Some of the rough areas had a super thick hay that made ball finding nigh impossible - avoid at all costs! But the gentler rough next to the fairways was not too penal at all. Sand traps were good all around but not super fluffy greenside, while the tee boxes were all in very good shape (we played the black tees).

Greens were very nice. Well conditioned, rolling about the same as Shadow Ridge the day before, meaning not overly fast (maybe 10 to 10.5) but very true roll and some fun green complexes to navigate, but nothing super tricked out or wacky. As for the layout, lots of big carries and precise, narrow tee shots on certain holes - very few wide open 'grip it and rip it' here. The first few holes on the back nine are narrow due to the housing alongside them, but it opens up beautifully later and the course becomes one with the nature surrounding it.

We had frequent cart service which was nice and the POP was excellent up until around the 15th or 16th hole when we caught the group in front of us who had slowed down for some reason, but overall a pretty great and fun round. They say the Dunes course is inferior to the Mountain course here and of course I will like to find out for myself, but so far would seem to be a tough ask for the Dunes course to beat this one. Don't let the more 'pedestrian' front nine lull you into a false sense of normality before you hit the last 4-5 holes that will really blow you away. Fun.

Rode the Blacks (6666/72.9/135) with Gary for 9 holes and played 9 as a single in 3H, 45M. The weather was sunny, clear, breezy and around 110. The Bermuda tees were a mixed bag. Most were lush and nice to play from. However, a few were in mediocre to poor condition. Only some par 3's had a decent amount of divot damage. The Bermuda fairways were lush and nice to play from. The Bermuda rough around the greens was very lush. The Bermuda primary rough was mostly lush, good coverage and usually mowed down, you could easily find your ball. The native rough is an almost sure lost ball. The sand traps were very well maintained. Other than large waste bunkers, most of the sand traps here are relatively small but there are a lot of them. The Bermuda greens putted medium fast and they are firm. Almost no ball marks due to the firmness. Hole 5 had a large temporary lake that had one trap and much of the fairway underwater, probably from a broken water line? The customer service was exceptional from everyone encountered. Cart gal around numerous times and the Marshall was out patrolling. Nice GPS on the carts that come with complementary bottled water. All grass range included with your fee, Definitely Recommended.

Played in a GK Plays here 5/20. Course was in pretty good condition coming out of their high season. It's a great course to play- challenging but not penalizing. Rough was brutal in some places and fine in others. Same with the sand- some places hard packed and wetter and in others fluffy and dry. The greens were a blast! They looked like they'd be awful but they were fast and breaking true! Forward tees were all mostly level and in good shape. The views from this course are superb. If you get the chance definitely play here, totally worth it.

Late to the party with this review. Played the GK event on Sunday May 20 and this was my first time playing the mountain course. Even though my scoring was horrible, I will not let that influence my review. This is a tough course, and nobody should expect to score well here until you played it a few times to pick up on all it's nuances, like the elevated greens makes club selection a chore. Like others have said before me, the conditions were good to very good. I found the green side bunkers firm, but playable and the fairways gave great lies. The greens were firm and holding shots took a good amount of spin. Reading the greens is another whole can of worms. they were fast one way and slow coming back, which means the breaks would change on comebacks.
The staff and facilities are top notch. I do want to come back soon for a rematch, and next time I will prepare better for this course.

I really enjoy the course and feel like you can really score here. Most tee boxes were in great shape. The fairways nice and green. Rough was easy to hit out of. Bunkers were good to me. Had a sandy on the 11th! Pace of play was around 4 hours. Greens were hard but rolled great. Perfect weather! It was great to meet new people and see everyone else again!
