Played Monday in the Guru outing, planned on light rain but only drizzled a couple times, didn’t affect play at all.

First, conditions: Most were very good to excellent, only exceptions were a couple par 3 tee boxes were a little chewed and some muddy/soggy areas but that would be expected with the weather. Greens looked thin but putted great, fairly firm so you had to allow for bounce/roll-out, especially on chips/pitches. Fairways had excellent coverage, some run on drives; rough was thick enough to lose a LOT of distance compared to staying in the fairway.

I have to mention the “waste areas/bunkers”. These waste areas are in better condition and raked/maintained better than most courses actual bunkers!

Loved the layout, it’s solid 1-18 and will require every club and shot in your bag.

Customer service was top-notch, very friendly and engaging.

Definitely recommended.

Overview: The La Quinta Resort and Club has two courses (the Mountain Course and the Dunes Course) and both are designed by Pete Dye. John set up #gkreviewguru tee times on both courses and I played the Mountain Course in the morning on Mon 1/8/18 with Brian, Ron and George. The four of us had a great time, and I would definitely would be interested in playing in the same foursome again in the future. Thanks guys ... each of you made it a great day for me!
John, enough can't be said about your ability to foster relationships with these resorts and golf courses. We appreciate your efforts in getting us to play some of the best courses in Arizona, California and Nevada ... thank you.

Clubhouse: We were the first group off at 7:03 am and the clubhouse/pro shop was promptly open at 6:00 am. The staff in the pro shop were friendly and told me that there was a sale going on. All full price shirts were 15% off and all full price hats were 20% off. Surprised that they would be having a sale during their high season, but it was nice to get the discount ... I purchased a Puma shirt that was $55 after the discount. Fair enough price.

Practice Facility: Beautiful view of the Santa Rosa Mountains, but I thought it was interesting that you could only use irons on the range. It seems that the range ended at 200 yards from the practice tees. Ok, not a big deal for me, but how about the group that comes from the East Coast and has not hit a driver in about 2 months?

Course: A classic Pete Dye course with big waste areas (which were perfectly raked), elevated greens, lush green fairways with about 5-10 yards of overseeded rough on each side of the fairway. The rough was not that deep, but you had to think about the possibility of a flyer. Lastly, the dormant bermuda that was in sharp contrast to the overseeded fairway and rough. Just the classic look that you see on tv when you watch the Hope or as it is now called the "Career Builder Challenge". The bunkers on the course were small and the sand was a little heavy/wet. Might have been because we were the first group out that morning ... not a big deal. Both Brian and I made a "sandy" on the par 4 8th hole.
The mountain views are spectacular and I really enjoyed the course. Hole #2 is a great par 3 with water down the entire left hand side, Hole #4 is a tough little par 5 with a blind second and/or 3rd shot to a green tucked back next to the mountain. The meat of the course though is on the back nine between hole #13 - #16 ... #13 is a par 3, #14 is an uphill par 4, #15 is a downhill dogleg right par 5 that plays to an elevated green. Finally, the signature par 3 16th is basically hit the green or the bunker left of the green. If you hit neither, you will be in the rocks.

Final Thoughts: Was not able to play the Dunes Course in the afternoon, but had lunch with John, Ron and Nickesquire before they went out and played the Dunes ... food and service were good. John, once again, thank you for setting up a great couple of days.

Played 1-8-18 early morning with John and Nick in a little under 4 hours with no waiting. Tee boxes were in good shape, mostly level and semi lush. Fairways were in great shape very lush and real nice to hit from. Rough was in good shape, not to long and fairly easy to hit from. Was in a few greenside bunkers that were very nice to play from. Greens were still filling in from being overseeded, but they rolled very nice and smooth at medium/fast speed. Costumer service was very nice and friendly from arrival to departure.

Welcoming staff in the morning went beyond to make my visit more enjoyable with Cart barn attendees at the end of our round ready to assist you in everyway possible. Had a great deal with the Guru Group, again Johnny thanks for the invite. Sorry I couldn't stay for the Dunes round.

Played the Blacks (6666/72.9/135) with GK Guru's John & Ron in 3H, 50M. The weather was overcast and calm around 70. Typical Pete Dye design with some raised greens, numerous mounds and massive waste bunkers. The over seeded tees were a mixed bag. Most were lush and near immaculate. However, a few were in mediocre condition. Only some par 3's had a decent amount of divot damage. The over seeded fairways were lush, near immaculate and nice to play from. The over seeded rough around the greens was very lush. The dormant Bermuda primary rough was the weakest part of the course. Good coverage and usually mowed down, you could easily find your ball. The native rough is an almost sure lost ball. The sand traps were very well maintained. Other than large waste bunkers, most of the sand traps here are relatively small but there are a lot of them. The small over seeded greens looked thin. However, they putted much better than they looked. Medium fast speed, firm and smooth with few ball marks. Overall, this is a challenging layout and the conditions were very good except for the rough, which was mediocre. Enjoy holes 13-17, which are about as good a consecutive 5 hole stretch as you will find anywhere. The customer service was excellent from all encountered. Cart gal around numerous times. Recommended.

Played here on 12/29. The course is typical Pete Dye with long sand trap waste areas running alongside fairways, and lots of elevated greens. Miss the green short.....roll down a ravine with a long uphill recovery,and lucky to see top of flag from 30yds out. So, you see where I was, starting with hole 1. The Bermuda grass is brown all around making this course look much less attractive than many others. But it plays fairly. The routing is interesting with many holes playing alongside the mountain where your target shots need to follow the contours. A couple so-so holes that route through homes to get back to the mountain. I'm never much of a Pete Dye fan and this falls in that category. I played fine in the end, but the course, despite being highly rated is really not among the best in the valley. The facility is just ok, driving range just ok, everything just ok. I probably won't be back but did enjoy it for what it was. I can only imagine that conditions do get better. No real complaints except the visual appeal lacks right now compared to others.

Played on Saturday 9/30/17. Had a groupon to use and it was supposed to be fairly cool (93F) so sounded good. Well, sounding good was all there was. It was 105F! HOT. This is normally a great course. Played it at the end of May and it was fine. I knew they'd punched a month ago but it should have healed. Nope. The fairways were decent, dead patches here and there but nothing bad. The rough was decent depth- 4-5 inches. Unfortunately most of it was a crab grass like turf- interwoven strands that would just stop your club dead! Ouch. Most of the traps were surprisingly hardpacked. Usually this course takes care of their sand pretty well. Not sure what was up with that. There was construction on two holes-MAJOR construction, earth moving machines kind of stuff. Looks like they are putting in drainage. They did not tell us this when we called to book but were upfront about it and the current relief rules when we checked in. It really wasn't a big deal. Just hit the ball and move on, right? :-) Forward tee boxes were hit or miss- level and nice, or egg cartons. Then there were the greens. ACK. I was really looking forward to these greens- in May they were emerald felt! They broke true and rolled fairly fast. Saturday those greens were but a distant memory. These greens were still recovering and the dimples made sure breaks were not true IF they broke at all and they were slow slow slow. They didn't hold a thing- didn't fix a ball mark all day because they were so hard! Oh well. This course has some great challenges and some outstanding views. It's a good course in general and certainly worth playing when it has it's party clothes on. The couple playing with us were there for the first time and I felt bad because their impression could NOT have been very good. Oh, and the beverage cart came around ALL the time- almost every 4 holes!

Played 9-30-17. I would have to say this course is in do not play here range. Greens were terrible. Had been punched some time ago but far from playable. Many had dirt areas on them. Traps were hard packed and fairways were barely playable. I am not usually so harsh but at the price they charge its definitely not worth playing now. Normally enjoy this course but again, give it some time before playing.

Golfed this course in late September, course condition good greens very slow too long. construction on several holes changed the tee boxes for the worse. As always the staff has to balance resort guest golfers with regulars so expect a 4+ round even when the course isn't too busy. Very few burned out spots for this time of year.
