Played Sat 6/16 @ 10:30am. Starter warned us that the course was full of 4somes and my 2some will have a long day. He was right. It took about 5 hrs to finish. Waited on every shot from the 1st tee. After playing both courses at Indian Wells the day before, LQ Mountain was a major disappointment. There were so many dried out areas in the fairway that it's visually unappealing and makes for much tougher playing conditions. Also the greens were about equal to or a little worse than IW Players course so overall playing condition leaves much to be desired. We thought we had a good EZ links deal at $50/pp but with current playing conditions, would not recommend it at all.

Out in the desert this weekend for my annual tournament and got out on Thursday about mid day. Picked the hottest day of the year to play, but had a great time. I have to preface this by saying I love this course and have a bias towards it, but out of the 5 courses I played this weekend, this one showed the most heat damage of them all. Fairways starting to burn out, greens not particularly great, but rolled true. Sand traps were inconsistent, but not horrible. Tee boxes were good, but a few not level, but we played the tips, so maybe the ones a little farther up were better. This course is great and other than a couple of blah holes-10-13-one of the best tracks in the desert. Definitely worth the 49 bucks to play. People playing in the heat of the desert- PLAY FASTER-

After my great round at the PGA West Nicklaus course, I headed over to the La Quinta clubhouse for my second round. I ate at the restaurant there to use my meal voucher and they were kind enough to make me a turkey sandwich, even though it was only 9:30 (I was ready for "lunch" after playing a round already). I was very much looking forward to my first round on the Mountain course. This has been one of the top courses on my SoCal "wish list" for a long time, but timing never quite worked out to play there until today.

My time was for 10:30 and we teed off right on time. Finished right at 4 hours, so the pacing was great even though it was relatively busy out there with a large tournament group in front of us. The layout here is great and the setting is spectacular right up against and into the mountains on a stunning back nine stretch (culminating in the signature 16th hole).

However, I have to say I was a bit disappointed because the course was not in great shape. Greens were fine, tee boxes good and sand seemed good (a little crusty looking, but played fine in the couple of bunkers I found). The fairways, though, were quite ugly. Patchy with a lot of brown/dead spots, some hardpan areas and just visually uninspiring. Rough was a little better, but not too great either.

I know this course is awesome when it's in great shape (I'm jealous looking at the spectacular pics here on GK), but it just wasn't in the kind of shape I would have hoped for (especially after my morning round on a course that was in excellent condition). I look forward to playing here again someday and hopefully catching it in peak conditions.

I love this Pete Dye layout and consider it a masterpiece. I played Wednesday March 7 and had a great time. I do however have one significant complaint - The waste bunkers - especially on the back nine were like hitting concrete. I do not expect these bunkers to have fluffy sand but they should at least have some. The green-side bunkers had adequate sand.

Played La Quinta Resort Mountain Course for the first time Wednesday with Shebylo and Shazza. We teed it up at 2:55pm and got 16 holes in just under 3 hours. Pace of Play was excellent. Being this was my first time playing the course, I could not help but be awestruck by how imbedded some of the golf holes were into the rocky steep lopes of the adjacent mountains. Words do not do justice to what I’m describing. Please take a look at the photos I snapped. As far as the conditions of the course, I found the greens to have a consistent medium speed roll, smooth, pleasing to the eye (with exception to only a few thin sections on some greens on the front that were tucked close to the mountains) and firm. Being this is a Pete Dye design I knew what to expect in that the greens were very undulated at times with false fronts and optical illusions. The fairways were lush, cut tight and not as firm as most of the desert courses I’ve played recently (which is good). The primary rough was lush, 2 inches long and very green. The secondary rough that bordered the sand traps and separated some adjacent holes was dormant bermuda grass giving a beautiful contrasting look throughout the round. The sand traps contained high quality sand, not perfect, but well raked and easy to play from. The tee boxes, that is the white tees, due to heavy play from and being Pete Dye courses typically have small teeing grounds making it difficult to rotate positions for superintendents, contained a lot of divot damage and were occasionally not level. Again, I state the white tees because if you look at the black tees or silver tees, as well as forward women’s tees they seemed perfect. Problem is there is a large disparity between the black, white and silver tees so the majority of men will likely play the white tees anyway. Overall the course is in great shape and I only see it getting in better condition as we move into warmer spring temps.

As far as the clubhouse, large and beautiful. The dining room is magnificent with a large open floor plan and surrounded by huge glass windows to view the course. I’ve eaten there a few times and can attest to the high quality of food and dining experience. Make some time to grab a bite before playing or after.

Overall I was blown away by this course and want to get back on it soon.

Such a treat on a postcard day with Pete Dye providing the entertainment. Very nice staff throughout the facility, made the welcome, and trek on a lush presentation worth a return visit. Nice clubhouse, bar and grill area, well stocked pro shop, and adequate prac/fac set us up for the round. The range is IRONS ONLY due space, but is all grass.
The course is extremely lush now, with rough around 2 inches, fairways mown tightly but soft and not yet running long. Sand is good throughout beside the greens. The white tees do need attention as some were ridged from so much play and thinning. The greens were medium speed, and smooth enough with some areas of pitting visible in the grass, where the ball would bounce on the way to the hole. Green design was very engaging with serious contouring and false edges, making the effective surface much smaller than what is visible. The layout was a good challenge with fantastic aesthetics on the front nine, which is a different course to the back nine.
The drinks cart did have a problem, and was parked on the 4th tee. A busy course still allowed our play to complete 16 holes in 3 hours, as we finished at dark. Thanks to Johnny GK and Shazza for the great company and good golf.

this course was going to be seeded on the 24th and I played on the 16th. I played a course in the area the day before that was on the same schedule and it was in much better shape. Two greens were reseeded and had tons of bare spots. 5 and 6. the fairways were in average shape and they had both muddy area's and bare spots but not too many. It is an ok course and has some fun finishing holes.

I played Sunday with an 11:15 tee time and went out right on time as a twosome. Customer service was great all around. Pace of play was fantastic. We played through one foursome, then didn't wait to hit a shot the rest of the day. The layout is fun and the setting is beautiful. It is a Pete Dye course, so you will have some challenging bunker and pitch shots surrounding the greens. Course condition was less than perfect, but that was due to the fact that they will soon be closing for over seeding. When they re-open, the conditions should be near perfect.

3 or 4 of the most picturesque holes you will play anywhere on the back nine. Otherwise a fun, varied, challenging but fair test throughout.

The rough is quite penal so watch your ball. Consider the hack-out and take your medicine. Low percentage hero stuff not advised.

Greens were the only downside. Most were crusty and firm (yet quite slow) - but there were 2 or 3 greens on the front nine near the mountain that were just almost completely gone. Dead to the point that one was about 85 percent baked earth.

Nice place and experience overall.
