Played July 20, 2008, at 0630. I am very critical of courses and customer service. I always play Angeles National and was getting bored with it. Two guys playing with me a few weeks ago recommended Lost Canyons. Wow, what a great facility. Great courses, great club house and restaurant and very good prices. This place blows Angeles away. Very professional service and easy to get on. No GPS but beautiful fairways and greens. Sand traps were amazing and intimidating. Great experience, you wont be disappointed. Lost Canyons gets an "A" grade.

Played Sat 5/17. Sky course is in good condition overall right now. The greens especially are in excellent condition. The fairways are spotty and some areas need more grass. Lots of tight lies. Tough greens, but they roll very true. In my opinion, this is a very tough, but great course to test your game. The gold tees play to 6740 yd, but as a previous post noted, holes 8, 9, and 11 play very long. This very well might be the last year for this course and that will be a real shame.

Course is in great shape. Greens are fast and roll true. I enjoy this course more than the Shadow and it is in much better shape.

Played the Sky on Feb. 18. Scenery is fabulous. Greens were firm, fast and the breaks were not easy to read. Tremendous amount of long forced carries on shots needed. Played from the gold tees which play alot longer yardage wise than listed. The uphill holes play 25% longer than the yardage listed. They did not have the black tees open and only a true sadist would try to attempt them and post a reasonable score. There are many memorable holes on this course. #9 may be the longest and toughest par 4 I've seen. I hit a long ball and after a good drive on #9 , I was left with a 232 yd 3 wood shot into the wind to a slightly elevated green. The two par 5's on the back are awesome, long and tricky. #17 is a great short par 3 with amazing views and #18 is also very panoramic and challenging. this is a truly unique place and the service was also excellent here

Played 2/17 at 9:40am. Played as a two some and finished in just under 4 hours. The course was in great shape, the greens were hard but rolled true. As always, the course played tough, I like a challenge so I loved it and can't wait to go back. It seemed like there was no one out there, we didn't wait to tee off on a hole until 18. It was a beautiful day of golf out on the sky course.

Played the sky corse. What was once a nice tract has been left to pot.
The maint. is non existant. For 60$ to 90$ I want a little effort. Was very dissapointed. Money better spent at rustic cyn.

We had a 3:30 tee time this weekend and had to approach the starter 3 times before finally being let out at close to 4. Once we were out there, the number of chops on the course was staggering. Decent Dye lay out, but for the same money and in the same area, I would play Moorpark or Rustic Canyon. At least until they find new management in this place.

Otherwise, conditions were pretty good though not stellar and the greens ran fairly true save for those on the par three where people miraculously forgot how to use a divot tool.

Been meaning to play Lost Canyons for some time. Finally did so yesterday (June 4, 2007), playing the Sky course. It was a nice setting, some very scenic rock cliff backdrops and vistas. The range and practice green were good. But after that you have to adjust your expectations.
There are very few level stances, and equally few straight putts on this golf course. There is also no GPS and few yardage markers, so you better have a SkyCaddie. Even with the yardage book (but no SkyCaddie), I misclubbed at least half a dozen times. You've got elevation changes and wind thrown in, so you should at least have the proper yardage.

I think it's fair to make a comparison to nearby Moorpark CC, which I play regularly. It's also narrow, pretty unforgiving to mi sh$t shots, with a lot of elevation changes. But there are two important differences. 1. Virtually every hole has a flat landing area for well hit tee and layup shots. 2. Most greens are one or two tiers, so you have a clear idea where to land the approach depending on the pin.

I really liked many of the hole layouts on the Sky course - at least in the abstract. If you put them on a course without the excessive undulations in the middle of fairways and everywhere on the green (I can live with the elevation changes and blind shots), I'd play there constantly. As is, for me, it was an exercise in voluntary suffering. The most positive spin I can find is that if you play this pair of courses regularly enough you will have enough local knowledge to post a decent score, and most other courses you go to will be easy by comparison.

I finally decided to pay the extra few bucks and play the Sky Course. I've played the Shadow a few times, and was always pleased. If you think Shadow plays tough, you might want to avoid the Sky. The layout is hilly and very long, with tons of sidehill lies and uphill shots. The greens won't hold shots, unless you bring them in skyscraper height. One of the big negatives of Lost Canyons is, the markers are non existent. For $90, it's ridiculous not to have GPS, especially considering how long and demanding the courses are.

Played 04/14 Sat at Twilight $85. Very interesting course and difficult course. Overall fairways and greens are great. First hole is only 300 yds and looks pretty simply. My first impression was, this course is not that hard as other people said. How wrong I was, as you proceed, they keep getting more difficult.
As we got to seventh hole, wind picked up. On the eighth hole, I had little less than 100 yds to the green and I used 8 iron to get to the green. I made a great shot and the ball was going to the flag, but the strong wind blow the ball back into the bunker. With the wind, ninth hole was another nightmare. All four of us OB or went into the water. Calming ourselves and start the back nines. On 10th hole, two of us birdie the hole. Finally, we are in control, NOT. Took us 5.5hours to finished the round. About 90% of the greens are undulating greens. Minimum two putts on the greens. If you missed the greens, good luck! Either you will be in a deep bunker or steep rough trying you best to get back to the green. We were all over our handicaps... but we also had Great Time. We will definitely go back. Few negative comments, hard to find restrooms (guess they want us to use the natural environments), no snack bar, and worst of all... bad yardage markers. They should install the GPS or at least put a more visible yardage markers. Once again, Great challenging course! Good customer service... they let us tee off 20 minutes before the twilight. Thanks!

This is target golf at its finest. The greens are very large and quite undulated and the pin placement can be a 3 club difference. The conditions are perfect and the course is very fun. You NEED some course knowledge for there are many blind shots and limited landing areas. You can shoot low here if you are accurate but if you are wayward you will be hit hard. They have a great practice area and a wonderful clubhouse.

Nice but not a great course.

Very challenging course! Unless you've played here a couple times be prepared to lose some balls and raise your score. We played the SKY course 2 weeks ago and there is almost no grass since most of the grass in this whole area has died. Greens are really hard and everything rolls off which is not ideal on greens that are multi tiered anyway. This was the first time I've ever had a 4 putt. The views are great and the holes are a very interesting design but be prepared to get frustrated because there are a lot of blind shots. Opt for the $6 yardage book.

This is one of my favorite courses but it is not in good shape. Like many courses in the valley, has suffered from the summer heat. Most of the tee boxes are being re-seeded. Fairways are spotty and thin in places. Greens were punched 2 weeks ago. They are far from healed. Several have large areas where they are bare from disease and some have large sandy patches. Worst of all, I was told on the phone the greens were back to 90%, just slow. The pro shop admitted after the round that they are around 50% but didnt offer any relief. There were workers and sprinklers going on almost every hole which is great unless your trying to play. With all the work being done, I would say it might be back up to speed in about a month. Not worth even the discounted price now.

Played the Sky Course on Sunday at 12:30. Front nine was exceptionally smooth; solid firm greens, but most shots held. Our 3some moved real quick...until the back! The course wasn't jammed up, just a very slow 3some that killed our play! Also, greens on back 9 were in bad bad shape; divots everywhere! Also, three holes on the back were packed with sand (and I'm not talking about excess sand from bunkers). Had a birdie opportunity shattered by putting through a sand packed green. If you are going to play the Sky Course, wait til twilight...not worth the $110.

Well, I guess when you know what you like, you know what you like and you know what you don't. I am just not a Pete Dye fan - although I like the sky better than the shadow (which I'll never play again), I still think this is just strange, almost unpleasant golf course design. I guess if you play it a bunch of times you can figure out which forty square-foot area of the fairway allows you a shot at the appropriate eight square-foot area of the green so that you can have a reasonable shot at making any kind of score, but that's just an exercise in frustration for me. For me, the fun of the game lies in being able to hit a good recovery shot from a less-than-ideal position, or even from real trouble - and still make par or even - gasp! - birdie from some weird place. On these courses, you're either in perfect position or you're just simply OUT of the hole. Oh well. For those who like the tricked-up Pete Dye thing, this course certainly has it all, and they definitely keep it in great shape. On a purely positive note the range is great, the practice greens have the on-course speed nailed, and it's a beautiful setting.

Tee'd off at 7:00am and beat the intense heat. (finished @ 8:40) The course is really in great condition except the bunkers are so soaked, that it's almost like playing from mush. As always the greens are firm and don't hold the shots, (At least they don't hold mine) Enjoyed the round, but give me an old traditional layout anytime ..... and for a lot less $$$.

The Sky Course is a great golf course and it is in great condition right now. Both courses at Lost Canyons are great golf courses.

The Sky Course has some of the most scenic views you will find on any golf course - standing on the 12th tee overlooking the the 14th and 15th holes is unmatched. The key thing to enjoying the Sky Course is to select the correct set of tees - don't be fooled by the yardage the golf course plays longer than the yardage apprears.

The more you play the Sky course the more you will enjoy it and find the areas to hit your approach shots, club selection, etc. You will find three of the best par 4's on any course with holes 8,9 and 11 and a great set of par 3's. There are a number of short par 4's especially at the start of the round which is nice.

Enjoy this beautiful golf course - I highly recommend it - enjoy a cocktail on the patio after the round and the views of the mountains.

Played here for first time yesterday. Despite overnight rains that continued almost until 11:00 am, the course was nearly completely dry and in magnificent shape. They must have a really great drainage system. The course and setting are beautiful, although I wouldn't say any holes are especially memorable compared with some of Dye's other works.

How best to divide 20 rounds of golf in Simi Valley and Moorpark between Rustic Canyon and Lost Canyons

19 RC - 1 LC, certainly not more at LC.

Both LC courses are generally very well conditioned, but at the end of the round, you might remember the goofy golf holes more than the peaceful, quiet surroundings, fast true greens, or immaculate conditions.

All of the staff at LC treat you very well. The restaurant and clubhouse are extremely good and very comfortable before and after a round. The food is tasty too.

It's unfortunately just not good golf.

For golf, choose Rustic.
For "Country Club For A Day" treatment, choose Lost Canyons.

The course was really fun and challenging. You almost never have a shot that stays on the same elevation (e.g. the fairway is below the green). The greens were really firm - I had at least 6 shots hit the green and roll off, and the putts were really fast.

Outstanding scenery and layout. We played from the golds and it was all we could handle. On most parts of the course a poorly hit shot is lost. #9 is breathtaking, a forced carry over the lake, just to be rewarded with another demanding approach shot to a speedy tiered green. Course was in excellent shape.

We played the front nine sky course and 18 holes of the shadow course thursday morning. The sky course is all you can handle from the gold tees. The shadow a little more managable. The greens were recently punched but still very fast under santa ana wind conditions. Very hard to hold your approach shots down wind. Fairways were perfect (carpet like). Greens were ok(need a few weeks to grow in)
Otherwise we had an enjoyable time.

I have played this course several times, but not recently. I had not played since they had both courses going at the same time. As usual, I enjoyed the round and think the course is in good shape, but the value relative to other courses in the area is not as good. I paid $480 for our foursome, which is 2x the amount we would have paid at Angeles National and over 2x what we would have paid at Rustic Canyon. I have avoided Lost Canyons in favor of other courses in the area, but almost everything else was either being overseeded, aerated or both.

As a former assistant pro, I am hesitant to be critical of the pro shop staff, but I must say that the current staff is not going to help them generate much business. Despite the fact that rounds are obviously down, they still manage to seem ambivalent to any customer concerns. We played the front nine in a reasonable time with no one in front of us. When we got to 10 tee, a foursome of terrible golfers was just teeing off. I called the shop to inquire and was informed they were rerounding after taking an hour off for lunch. I mentioned that a group loses its position on the course by doing that, but the staff said a group was a couple of holes in front so we would catch someone anyway. Although that was beside the point, we finished a good 30-45 minutes behind what we would have otherwise.

My advice to Lost Canyons is to bring down the rates in line with Tierra Rejada, Moorpark & Angeles National, improve customer service and start rebuilding the loyal following you once had.

Played here 8-7. Great course, very interesting design. Very challenging and fantastic scenery. A few brown spots on the fairway, tough to keep everything lush in the summer here. Greens have recovered from earlier aeration, but so fast that downhill putts are a bit scary (11-12 stimp).

This is the better of the two layouts. Tend to have pretty good twilight rates, can usually finish the whole 18...plays farely fast. Most greens tend to break more than you initially see, you will figure it out but it can take a few holes to adjust.

Overall a very good golf course. Can be nearly impossible from the tips if the wind is up.

Loved the layout, but the howling winds (3 club wind, at least)made it tough to really enjoy. The greens were very fast and smooth, but they were too hard and would not hold anything. Maybe the winds dried them out. At $95 weekday, I don't think it is a great value. There are other higher end courses in just as good condition for a lower price. Second the thought that range balls should be included with that price. As for the customer service, that is a tough call. Very friendly at the bag drop and the club house, but never saw anyone after that. The starter pointed us towards the Sky course and said "Have a good round". Only saw the cart twice (the cart girls were nice). A great lay out in great condition, but I am not sure about coming back for $95.

Played Sky Course on December 17, 2004. Even with British Open winds -- never played with gusts that strong before -- the course was a total joy. Power lines are in sight on two holes -- other than that, the course is pristine -- no development, no traffic, no noise. Fairways and greens are in beautiful shape, the rough was not too punishing (which, given the wind, we were grateful for), and the driving range/putting greens are a treat (although for the fees, the practice balls ought to be free). The staff is warm and friendly. All in all, a great golf experience.

Having played the Shadow Course on a few occasions prior to this, I was looking forward to playing the Sky. I absolutely love this course. Gorgeous views, incredible fairways, and even though the greens had just been punched and sanded, they rolled fast and true. This course is much more forgiving than the Shadow course, but it's still demanding and very challenging. The 17th has got to be one of the coolest par 3's in the country. When we played last week, the pin was in the back left so, to go at the pin, it looks like you need to land it on something about the size of a silver dollar to get it close. Long, short, or left - you're dead since it's perched atop a mountain peak where three sides are straight down drops at least a couple hundred feet!
LOVE this course!!!

I was up at the course hitting balls at the range and was talking to the staff about the opening date for the Sky course and he indicated that they are bogged down in the approval process so the opening is dependent on the approval of the rebuild plans and construction of the bridges. My guess is they will be lucky to get it open prior to June. ARG!

Sky course will hopefully reopen in December. Because of the overseeding done just prior to the fire damage, when the course does reopen it should be in immaculate shape!

Was damaged by the fires. The Sky Course lost many bridges, sustained damage to its irrigation system, and is closed indefinitely until repairs are complete. The Shadow course sustained much less damage and should reopen soon. Thankfully and incredibly there was NO DAMAGE to the clubhouse, greens, fairways, and tees. However many areas of the surrounding terrain were scorched as well as telephones poles lost thereby knocking out communications for now.

I played this course as a single for 35 dollars at 4.30 pm. Managed to squeeze through 18 holes. The fairways were just overseeded, thus, the grass is long and you do not get much roll . The greens were smooth but still needs some work. Overall, the course was in decent shape and I would give it a few more weeks before it returns to its perfect form.

I went up to play the golf course but was surprised to see the range closed and the golf course was having a tournament so I could not go out as a single. However, the head golf professional was truly a professional as he gave me a complimentary small bag of range balls for my troubles to use when I go there next time. The staff at Lost canyons are the best in my opinion as they are patient and caring. They truly suit this fantastic golf course well.

awesome! 17th hole got my attention, but
walked off with a par. Wonderful design and
layout, would go back in a heartbeat -especially at the wednesday afternoon rate
of 49 bucks!

Played the Sky Course. The course was in incredible shape 11/10. Shot a 75, my best score ever. Definitely a must play.

I'll echo the comments by tigerwoods - greens are very difficult to read. You expect the influence of the canyon to really be the dominate factor in how the greens roll, but we didn't find that to be true. We played yesterday - 54 holes in fact. Played Sky once, and Shadow twice. On wkdays, you can pull coupon down from their website allowing you play unlimited golf for only $95. Both courses are awfully difficult on the player who isn't straight. 20 degree misses out here result in digging into your bag for a new ball. Only the plus side, the course is maintained better than any other public facility I've seen in socal.

Having just played the course last weekend, I enjoyed the views and the course layout. However, I have to wonder if the greens couldn't use a bit more water on them or a slight increase in grass length. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy a challenge - but the combination of the invisible breaks which were so expertly woven into these greens using the surrounding landscape and the extremely dry and tightly-mown greens made three putting a frighteningly common occurence for my father and I, who have a 4 and 10 handicap, respectively. The course was a good challenge, but I have to believe that it would be rather frustrating to play on a regular basis if you did not have a serious amount of game with your flat stick. I definitely would not take someone with a 15 or above handicap out to play here, unless you want to watch them draw several snowmen on their cards and lose a couple of sleeves of balls with ease. Typical Pete Dye challenge, but not worth the money when compared to surrounding courses as noted by user golfguru on 12/26/02.

Played Lost Canyons (Sky Course) 01/29. After playing it the first time 11 months ago I couldn't wait to play it again. I wasn't disappointed. If you are looking for a plush course, this is the one. Yes it is a little pricey but is well worth it once in awhile. The course was in great shape. I think that the greens should have been softer given their difficulty. This course allows a player to be rewarded when a good shot is made. On the other hand, penalized for a bad shoot. If one plays well here there is a sense of accomplishment that you don?t get playing other courses. Can?t wait to play Shadow Course next

Played the Lost Canyons Sky Course (12/26). Really enjoyed the course…thought it is was in super shape! Greens are very tricky and firm so some of the pin placements can be very challenging. I’ve stop playing Lost Canyons since Rustic Canyon and Moorpark CC were built nearby. I think Lost Canyons is better course but still too pricey..$95..compared to the $35 and $55 at Rustic and Moorpark. If Lost Canyons dropped their fees down to $75 then I think I would start playing the course on a regular bases again.
