I played this past weekend with globetrotting golf photographer/influencer Patrick Koenig (over 1,000 courses played) and Todd Herron, who also makes it clear on his Instagram account that he’s on a quest to play as many courses as possible. During the round, the topic came up of how many courses I’ve played. While I wasn’t exactly sure, I said 290-something.

Patrick then asked where I had in mind for No. 300, and it dawned on me I hadn’t given it any thought.

I don’t really consider myself a “course collector” in the sense of wanting to play anywhere and everywhere, but I do enjoy keeping a running total and adding quality courses when possible. I came home and revisited my list, and realized it now stands at 296 courses.

The whole thing kind of reinvigorated my desire to grow that number and reach No. 300 sooner than later.

So… where should I play? I have a few casual/tentative invites from private club members that would make for a great “milestone” course, but those are sorta out of my control until they get formalized.

Recommendations welcome! (While keeping in mind I’m pretty frugal.)

QUOTED  Recommendations welcome! (While keeping in mind I’m pretty frugal.)

Destination? (more than 100 miles) or close to home? (Less than 100 miles)

Many nice public courses to select from in the Palm Springs area and the Monterrey area. I have seen many of your reviews over the years from the greater Vegas area, so know you have hit many of them.

Why not hit one of your favorite course designers layouts you have not experienced before? It doesn't need to be special or memorable to the masses, just special or memorable to you would be my advice.

The goal has always been long and straight! But since I can no longer hit them long, hopefully straighter could be achieved more than occasionally?

Also, I've seen a couple reviews in the past week for Cresta Verde. So that place is still open.

doesn't it totally depend on which courses you haven't played? it's pointless asking for a rec if we don't know what to choose from.

but you can take these private club invites and reach out and frame it as: hey, i want your course to be my '300' xoxo

then you can lie, and make all of them your 300.....

i remember counting a couple of years ago, but can't find the file/tally. so i counted again this am... i'm at 229 18 hole courses. I have 20 additional par 3, executive, or 9 hole courses as well, which I won't count.

I had to pull some out of the memory bank due to them being closed:
cascades (first place I broke 90)
stevinson ranch (site of the best GK trip)
empire lakes (the pearl of rancho cucamonga)

Mark, I have to agree with the crowd that it's a strange, open ended, question. Perhaps give us a top 10 ideas you have and we can weigh in.

BUT, you were an inspiration to some of us to count our courses and I just found out that I played my 200th different course this year (roughly speaking). How anyone could decide what counts as what doesn't is beyond me - but 202 different entries popped up in my recorded rounds and I knows I've played a handfull of new courses this year.

I agree with Nick. In fact any # 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 etc should be your own personal choice.

Why not hit one of your favorite course designers layouts you have not experienced ? It doesn't need to be special or memorable to the masses, just special or memorable to you would be my advice.

michaelko - I didn't mean the courses had invited me; members have, so I'm dependent on them to make it happen, meaning I can't really dictate when they take place.

Nick's advice made me think of a potential trip up to Cypress Ridge in Arroyo Grande and other courses in that area I've yet to play.

Another one I've always wanted to play but never made it out there is Steele Canyon in Jamul.

Here are some possibilities I put together based on region:
Central Coast:
Chalk Mtn
Hunter Ranch
Cypress Ridge
Glenn Annie
Santa Barbara
Blacklake
Dairy Creek
Alisal
Mission Club

San Diego:
Loma Club
Steele Canyon
Balboa Park

Desert:
Mission Lakes
Escena
Shadow Hills
