Played here today while in the region for the holidays. It's a private course, but the GM and Head Pro were nice enough to have me out after I pitched my blog. I'm not sure it's that tough to access anyway. I had a 10:00 tee time, but arrived early and it wasn't very crowded out. I played the first 12 holes on my own and then joined a threesome for the remainder. Total pace was only around 3 hours. They charged me the $25 nine hole walking rate, but I was able to play all 18. The good news is that this was the first good weather day they've had around here in weeks. The sunshine was nice and the grass was lush and green throughout, showing how well they take care of this course. However, it was so sloppy wet it was pretty brutal after tons of rain this month. It would have been cart path only, so I walked and slogged my way through. It was kind of fun, though. They obviously aren't able to cut the fairways often with the wetness, so they were shaggy and squishy. The rough was lush and a little deeper than the fairways. The greens were super soft and rolling a bit slow, but actually better than I would have expected. The bunkers are worthless and most had deep puddles in them. Obviously, I did not catch Baywood in the prime season, but it was still pretty nice considering how much rain they've had. On really bad days, they will close the back nine because it's lower terrain and there are more shaded areas. I was happy it was open today, but it was definitely mushier on that side. This is a nice layout lined by majestic redwoods and many mature trees. It rolls up and down some hills and features a good mix of holes. Great secluded setting showing off the natural beauty of Humboldt County. Cream of the crop in an area with limited options.
