Just played on 2/2/13 and I was really dismayed. I know it's been cold but there really is no excuse. I can understand dry or patchy rough but the fairways were terrible. I am a big fan of the LA Municipal courses and play them often and even I can't understand the conditions. That said, i think the greens were in very good shape, all things considered. They were rolling fast and had more break than usual (most of the time there is very little break)

Played Wilson (IMO the jewel of the LA munis) this past Saturday (11/12). It had rained the night before so the course was pretty empty. However, the course held the water just fine. Sure there was moisture but no puddles or mushy spots. I need to say that the greens were fantastic. They were aerated a few weeks ago and are smooth and surprising flat. Of course a sadist decided the pin placements that day which made for a very rough putting day. That said the ball rolled true. I suggest you get out there as soon as you can. As usual the fairways were in good shaped and the rough was LA rough. (the most deceptively difficult rough you can find). Sadly, like many LA munis, the tee boxes are bumpy and chopped up. That is one area I think they need to focus on.

Now some people will say Rancho but for my money, Wilson is the best muni and it's not close. (granted I HATE Rancho)

I played PGA Nicklaus this past Sunday and boy it was a treat. Unfortunately there was a steady 30 mph wind the whole time but I wasn't about to let that spoil my round. It was a very interesting course unlike I've ever seen. The plateau fairways really made accurate tee shots a bonus but, thankfully, plenty of room on the sides to miss if you are a higher handicapper like me. Unlike many upscale courses I have played in Southern California this one doesn't make every errant shot a 2 stroke penalty. the greens were pretty fast but surprisingly not that undulated. So, putting wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be. The staff there was great and very friendly. I didn't have time to enjoy the bar/restaurant. Can't wait to go back again.

Just as a heads up, as posted below, Encino is playing all 18 holes. I have to say that considering the pictures that were posted at the LA Golf Facebook page, the groundskeepers performed a miracle. The course was in fine shape. The only semi-bad area was near the green on 5 (green was fine) and between the tee and green on 6 (par 3 so who cares?). The LA Golf site still has aeration on May 2 but it was, indeed, done on the 19th. Some of the greens have come back to 90% or better and some are still a bit bumpy. In a couple of weeks the course will be perfect. Get out there while people still don't realize it's open.

What can I say, the course is soaked. There is standing water everywhere and you will get no roll. All things considered, the course is still very playable and in good condition considering all the water it has taken. The greens were very slow but in good condition. Still a fun place to play.

I just played Hansen last Saturday (2/5/11) and I was really impressed. I've played there many times and this was the best condition I have ever seen it. As a regular player at the city muni's this might have been the best condition I have ever seen at ANY city course. That said, the reversed nines are terrible. The entire character of the course is gone. 1. the old 18th (the TOUGHEST green of all the munis) was the best finishing hole on the city courses. Now it's the 8th hole. The 9 now ends with a par 3. I hate that. 2. The new 17th and 18th are terrible finishing holes. 17 is tight and awkward and 18 is way too long (more later). 3. The new 18th hole is 450 yards uphill from the tips. It's is far out of line with the rest of the holes on the course. Considering the elevation at the end of the hole, it easily plays over 500 yards. 4. the #2 is too short. I can easily reach the green from the black tees and I am not the biggest hitter. It's 250 yards!
