Played last Saturday, 7/14 with a tee time about mid-morning. We tee off about 15 minutes after our scheduled tee time. Pace of play was a little slow today. It took around 5 1/2 - 5 3/4 to play 18 on a rather hot day. There was a foursome on the front nine behind us that decided to quit for the day as it was too backed out on the front nine.

Course condition was better than expected considering how dry and hot it's been for the last several weeks. Fairways had rather good coverage from tee to green. Tee boxes were in good condition. Note when we played it was about 1 week after the recent brush fire just off the 2nd tee. The hillside to the left of the 2nd tee was all black and smelled of smoke. Bunkers had decent sand. Greens were in above average condition. Balls tend to roll a little fast on the greens.

This is not an easy course to play but I like the layout of the course. Golf course has houses all along the course so it has a country club feel to it. 1st hole is pretty scary considering it's an elevated tee with the driving range to the right and the hole play uphill. I really like playing here except pace of play tends to be an issue here. Course is not flat. It's a little hilly. Some holes you hit down to the fairway and some you hit up to the fairway.

There's a driving range here with two levels. Upper level of the driving range is irons only. Bottom level you 're not limited but the back of the driving range is just over 200 yards to the back net fence. It can get rather hot on the driving range in the morning with the sun directly in your face. You don't get shade on the bottom level of the driving range into the afternoon. There's a small restaurant here. Facility also has banquet rooms so the parking lot can get quite full during wedding season.

Played Knollwood CC this past Thursday. Course was in above average condition, which was unexpected due to the recent heatwave. Driving range was nice but off mats, tee boxes were lush and sometimes a bit unlevel (not too bad), fairways were lush and green, rough was either very present and overgrown or not present at all and dry, greens were medium and mostly smooth with very limited bumpiness. Restaurant bar was very nice for a post round drink. Beers were a bit too expensive but service was excellent. If you are in the area, Knollwood CC is a fun course to play, where you need to keep it relatively straight as you do not have parallel fairway bailout here. Its an attractive course with a solid layout. I would consider Knollwood CC a 3.5 star out of 5.

Played 5-11-18 first out as a single walking for $30 and finishing in about 2 hours and 15 minutes with some minor waiting on the back nine. Tee boxes were in descent shape, semi-lush and mostly level with some minor divot damage on par threes. Fairways were in good shape, mostly lush with some minor thin and brown spots, providing good lies with minimal roll out. Rough for the most part was cut down pretty low but there were a few thick and heavy spots mostly a little ways off the greens. Was in three greenside bunkers all of which had a good layer of firm brown sand. Greens were in real good shape, medium speed, rolling pretty smooth, and a little on the soft side. Overall course is in good shape .

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Talk about a love-hate ... the honest truth is that I absolutely love the layout at Knollwood and you can absolutely tell within the routing how this used to be a very high-end private course in LA. It has such a unique feel to it and that's even better when it's as green and in such nice shape all around as now. The fairways are very green and so playable (with the notable exception of the always tough to get enough light 6th hole). The coverage is outstanding to be fair and the tee boxes, bunkers and rough are also in very good shape. Even the greens are very receptive to good shots and have nice coverage to them. There may be one or two too many ball marks from some lazy guests (and plenty of those guys obviously not raking their bunkers either), but for the most part the greens are very nice, roll medium fast speed and hold their lines well. But the usual culprit at Knollwood is of course the POP, which is such a shame. Stacks of players lined up on every hole, did not manage to finish the front nine in less than three hours. Two of my playing partners up and quit. Others quit well before that. Front office said there was no marshall available. Well, maybe there should be? Luckily the POP improved slightly on the back nine after around the 14th hole, but by that time the damage had been done. It's an absolute shame that such a great course is not taking the time to address its horrible POP. But clearly it's still full so no one will care until people stop showing up. And maybe that's just what they should do. All I know is that Rancho Park had this reputation before, made changes, and now I have not played a round there that took longer than five hours in at least a year. Have to start somewhere ... Only saving grace is the twilight fee is just like $21 and you get a snack and drink at the turn with that as well. But please, KCC, it's such a fun layout and looks beautiful right now ... get your act together. Do us all the favor.

Played yesterday before coverage of the Masters started...

Pace of play was great. We were the 2nd group out and didn't wait until the 14th hole when the group in front of us was driving around in the bushes looking for their balls. Overall the pace was great as we teed off at 0630 and finished at 1010. Greens were in fantastic shape. Dried out a little as the sun came up and got a little faster, but rolled smooth and true. Boxes and fairways were not great. Looked like they were getting ready to punch the fairways, and even had hole 6 punched already (along with all the little turds sitting there in the fairway). Would have been okay if they pulled those off, but it was not as aesthetically pleasing as the hole normally is. Would highly recommend this course as long as you're off early in the morning. Might want to wait a few weeks until the maintenance is complete though.

Played in a tournament on Saturday, the 13th. It was scheduled to start at 9:00 but went off about 15 minutes late. Very slow round. We finished in about 5:20. Considering I did not play well, it was an ordeal.

The course was in okay shape overall. Quite a few bare spots in the fairways, at least some due to winter conditions. They have let some areas go to dirt on the sides (such as right of the cart path on #1) although there is a decent amount of rough area. The rough was cut low and not much of a factor. The sand traps had thick beach type sand and we had at least two players plug in the face of bunkers.

The greens were whoa Nelly fast. Easily the fastest greens I have played in a while and rolling true. Given the slope on some greens, the speed made it difficult. Two people in my group (okay, I was one of them) four putted greens. On a par three on the back nine, I saw four people chip across and off the green on a front pin placement where if you were not below the hole, you could not hold the green if you got to the hole on your chip. I liked the challenge the greens provided. They were the highlight of the course.

The course has wild areas but the undergrowth has been largely cleared out where it might come into play. We had numerous shots bounce off hillsides and back into the grass or at least where they could be played. It was possible to get into trouble but there was definitely some forgiveness. There are a lot of uphill shots to greens where it is difficult to judge distances to counter the forgiveness of the tee shots.

I seem to play here every 8 to 10 years. If it is that long again, I probably won't be sad about it.

Played this morning, the second group out. It was still dark on the first hole but managed a bogey. For those that have played the course know, that it's a pretty tough opening hole. I think the best part about Knollwood right now are there greens and the sand in the bunkers. Unfortunately, I found after being in four green side bunkers this morning, no one seems to be
taking the time to rake them. I also must have repaired at least four ball marks on every green. C'mon people. Besides that frustration, a beautiful morning with good friends in under four hours.

Every now and again we all test the definition of insanity like a child repeatedly putting their fingers in a power socket. Well, that was Knollwood yesterday. Don't get me wrong, the course is in fine (enough) shape. Typical ball mark damage, traps great and tee boxes somewhat beat up and not level. But our tee time was 11:40am (GolfNow - $41 deal) on a Saturday. So we were expecting five hours. We actually teed off at 12:25pm and then waited another 5 mins after that to get to our tee shots because they were out of carts. Even with that, we got to the second tee to find two groups waiting. We made the turn at 3:40pm, which to repeat, was 4 hours (!) after our scheduled tee time and 3 hours 15 mins after we hit our first tee shots. Incredibly the back played in 2 hours and 30 mins, presumably because some people quit. So a five hour/45 min round plus the 45 mins made it a 6 hour/20 min round. Take into account the 20 min drive there from home and the 40 mins early arrival to putt and hit balls and Knollwood cost me an entire day yesterday. Needless to say, nobody played well. It's worthless hitting balls when you're already tight again on the first tee. I'm not happy.

Played Knollwood on Monday morning at 8:15 as a threesome. There was a threesome of older ladies and a threesome of older gentlemen in front of us. We were prepared for a slow round. But we were pleasantly surprised, as both of these groups played fairly quickly. We finished the round in 4 hours. The course is in fair shape. Tee boxes are fine. The fairways are pretty thin, but playable. Rough is spotty. Could be long and lush or bare. The bunkers had very nice soft sand in them. They were a pleasure to hit from. The greens were in nice shape, smooth and running medium to medium fast. For the walking senior rate of $30, it was worth it. Speaking of walking, the back nine has about 5 consecutive holes that are severely uphill. This is a strenuous course to walk. Overall, a nice day of golf on a decent public course.
