RPGC event this weekend was at Lakewood and I was really looking forward to playing here again after a long absence. I do enjoy this course a lot and feel it suits my game pretty well (even though the best I've ever shot here is 86!). Practice facility is solid and course conditions are about what you would expect at this time.

One very annoying note - there is a snack shop not only at the turn (near the tunnel), but also after the second hole. It was a Sunday afternoon. Course's tee sheet was full. The snack shop I was so looking forward to was closed. I spoke to someone inside and they said 'It's not busy so I closed up.' What? On a busy Sunday for a holiday weekend? Unacceptable and terrible customer service. An absolute joke.

Okay, rant over. POP was pretty decent overall but we still took about four and a half hours overall on an incredible and warm summer day. There are some thin areas in the fairways but overall they're pretty darn good. Tee boxes (played the whites) also in serviceable shape - flat and level. Bunkers were a little bit thin but playable with a good strike. Rough was very playable.

Greens were in nice shape overall with a few pitch marks around but nothing too terrible. I was leaving a lot of putts short all day - most likely due to having played the fast greens at Hacienda just days before, but they were rolling pretty nicely and at medium-fast speeds. They held shots pretty well and were inviting for good chips if hit well.

We had cart service fortunately come around twice (once on the front, once on the back) and overall it was a solid performance from Lakewood that won't make me hesitate about signing up for the next event here.

Played Lakewood today teeing off at 8:30 and played in exactly 4 hours. The course is in nice shape and most tee boxes are fine with the exception of number 3 for both blue and white they were a little chunky but for the most part fine. Greens were great and held shots well, lots of sand in bunkers as I was in a few. Most of the tee boxes today were almost next to each other, the first 4 were only a few yards apart and then from 5 on they were separated by maybe 10 yards but I did see a lot maintenance workers today so maybe it was for today only, because if you were playing whites it was a good 6500 + yards today. Last thing, the rough is really grown here to maybe 3-4 inches so if you spray your ball a little good luck finding it. Was lucky to find a tee time here today, but for those of you who are seniors, the Lakewood Senior Men’s Club has openings you get to play 2 tournaments a month on a Monday teeing off at 8 am just thought I would mention it. Always a good time playing here..

Took advantage to play Lakewood, which I have not played for quite some time. Have to agree with the most recent review. Greens were the highlight of the course. Rolled well and had decent pace. Fairways had good coverage. Rough was at times just brutal. Which was also true of the bunkers for the opposite reason. Rough was thick and lush, while the sand (what there was of it) was thin/hard.
Enjoyed the round, but I must admit that the blue tees are now more than this 79-year-old can handle. Too many holes I can no longer reach in regulation, so it put a lot of stress on the short game. Funny, how different golf courses play when you lose so much distance. Since everyone else was playing the blue tees, it was easier just to suck it up and deal with it. Plus, those are the tees I always used to play. Who says that you become wiser with age

Played Wednesday, April 15, around 7:00 am, walking from the blue tees. There were several openings for singles when I checked the website on Monday afternoon. Come to find out the reason was there was no back nine play, they were sending early 18-hole golfers off 1 and 10 because of a shotgun start for an outing later in the day. My group of four walkers finished in 4 hours. The range was not open when we started, it opens later on Wednesdays.

The course is really lush right now. Fairways are great and the rough is thick. There were areas of a second cut that were really punitive. Very thick kikuyu grass. The highlight was the greens. Fully healed from aeration, they were deceptively quick. Some tough downhill putts. The lowlight was the sand traps. They should be GUR until they can put some sand in them. I got out of the front right trap on #9 but there was no way to hold the green on the shot. The front left bunker on #17 was marginally better although I was in a low spot of what had recently been mud. The fairway bunker I was in on #16 was like hitting off the cart path.

The lush conditions and nice greens more than made up for the sad bunkers. Recommended.

The bunkers were dirt and mud, they need some work for sure. I had not played this course in 20 years and will be back. Pro shop check in was great, courteous and welcoming. The facility has improved since I was last on property.

Late review after a round last Friday, about 7:30 am tee off. Walked from the blue tees with two riders and another walker. Not a quick round but the back nine was faster than the front and we finished in less than 4.5 hours. Snack bar was open when we made the turn.

The course was still wet in places from the rain last Tuesday but much better than when I played in January. For whatever reason there was still a moisture problem from the restroom building next to the 13th tee extending into the fairway, including a buildup of water on the cart path. The fairways were good if a little shaggy for this time of year. The sand traps were lousy, wet mud for the most part. The greens were pretty quick and held shots well. There were some difficult putts out there considering the speed and slope.

The course is playable but playing longer than usual. I would give it a few days to dry out but worth the play considering the cost.

Walked from the white tees today with the grandson, teeing off just before 8:00 am. The range was closed in the morning but was open when we were finishing. They sent us out as a twosome. It was a slow day, with us finishing in 4:50. Part of that was because it was cart path only for carts. The course was crowded. It looked like the ladies' club was teeing off at 8:00 am and was still sending groups out when we made the turn 2.5 hours later. There were three groups waiting on tee on the par three third when we made the turn, so it was probably slower after us.

The course was as wet as I have ever seen it, even though it had been several days since the last rain. The fairways were really shaggy at the start but they were mowing them around us. One problem was that some of the fairways were still flooded in part so they cannot mow them entirely. The right side of the #9 in the landing area and the left side of the #18 beyond the cross bunker were two examples. There was evidence of a flood from the restroom building next to the 13th tee extending about 150 yards diagonal down the hole and ending in the middle of the fairway. There was still water pooling in that fairway. As would be expected, the rough was gnarly and wet. We had to search hard to find our balls and the grandson lost a couple. The bunkers are in bad shape with erosion areas in some and pools of water in others. I hit out of one and it was hard pan.

The good news was the tees were okay and the greens were great. The greens were quite quick and running smooth. Even with the damp conditions, I found the course playable. I was only in bad conditions off the tee a couple of times. We did not need to play lift and clean. I had a good time. That said, I would give the course a few days to dry out though if I had a choice where to play.

After many days of rain, and maybe 12 hours of no rain, the course was in decent shape. cart path only, range closed. drains ok, not a lot of standing water in the fairway. bunkers were gur... basically lost ball in the water. Greens not too bad... seemed like they were able to mow the greens and they ran a fast 9, slow 10... I could see how if they were running fast, the greens would be difficult to putt. Was glad to get some golf in, even in wet conditions. didn't rate due to rainy conditions.

The course was quite wet. There was a heat alert for the day so it likely was because of that, but it made the course play longer. The bunkers suffered the most from that with some water pooling at the bottoms of a couple and heavy, wet sand in most. The fairways were good with some bare spots. Rough was a factor with some thick areas capable of hiding balls. On 18, I did not see the ball after my second shot until I was within 10 feet of it. The greens were still recovering from aeration earlier this month but they were running at nice speed and were pretty firm. Quite a few bumps still though.

The greens should be completely healed within two weeks although the course is playable now and I may be back before then.
