Played today. Course was still under CPO. Course conditions as you can imagine were not ideal. Fairways need mowing but are still to wet to accomplish. Tee boxes were all playable. Not so for the bunkers but that is to be expected with all the rain. Yikes is the best way to describe the rough. But the greens were very playable. Hopefully some warm days are ahead and the course can get itself back into shape. It was just nice to get out and play frankly. And Gina in the pro shop is great to deal with. Not ideal conditions but it beat sitting in the house.

Played Westridge this past weekend with my monthly golf group and was terrified to have another water-logged, rain-soaked and unkempt course to deal with which is what happened the last time we played here early in 2023.

Thankfully, despite still being CPO all afternoon), the course had dried out far better and there were actual fairways this time around instead of an extension from the rough all the way across the landing areas. This is not to say that there weren't still some wet or damaged areas, but nowhere near as bad as the expectation.

POP was pretty atrocious as we had an incredibly slow group in front of us, yet the marshall seemed to want to spend more time watching us hot on their heals all day. It was frustrating because we should not have had to rush the 18th hole with the darkness descending if the groups ahead of us had moved efficiently (we had an 11:30 tee time FTR).

We played from our customary white tees for this group and I was amazed at just how short this course plays, especially now that I have driver back in my bag. I think I only busted out the big dog on six or seven holes. But the layout is still pretty fun and Westridge has one of the tightest uphill par 5s you'll ever play on the front nine (depending on which way they switch the nines - always seems to depend on the day).

Greens were in good shape with some ball marks here or there but rolling pretty well and holding shots. Nothing too crazy. Some of the tee boxes were a little banged up and lacking proper grass but not the end of the world, and some of the bunkers still had standing water but even those that didn't were a bit too thin for great sand shots. Fairways definitely had some benefits from the rain and the rough was thick but not too penal.

It's not a bad course at all but I certainly hope the next time I find myself here it will actually be a warm, dry and sunny day because I always seem to come here just days after the Heavens open up.

Played this AM. Course is in relatively good shape. Especially the greens. No issue with any tee boxes. Fairways have good but not great coverage but do provide decent lies and plenty of roll out. But they are not lush like some courses and you will find some GUR areas at present. Rough is penal in all areas you encounter. Sand traps are the issue here presently. IMO they just do not have enough sand in them to get properly under the ball. And some of are muddy and in need of work. Greens were just great. I think I only fixed two ball marks other than my own. They are firm so you need a high shot to hold and it will release. And they are about 10 in speed. Gina in the pro shop is a pleasure to deal with and the cart guys and marshal are great as well. $54 for rate with cart is quite good given the prices around S CA.

Able to snag a first time off at 6:04AM for an online deal of two for $90. A good deal considering prices today. Although it was rather busy, no issues getting out on time. The greens were far and away the best part of the course. Nice pace and rolled well, and very receptive. The greens on the back nine had not been mowed, so obviously were not as quick or true. None of the bunkers had yet been raked, but the two I found did have adequate amount of sand. While the fairways had decent coverage, they needed to be cut which resulted in very little if any roll out, so the course played rather long this morning. There were also areas in the rough which looked like U S Open rough I have to admit that I thought the overall appearance of the course was kind of "scruffy". Enjoyed the round, but left somewhat disappointed

Played this AM. Course is in decent shape though wet in the early AM from watering in advance of heat. Never a problem with a tee box. Fairways have good coverage starting at about 100 yards out from Red tees through to green to conserve water. Some dried out faster than others to give some good roll out but they all provided good lies. Traps need work. Either more sand or dig them up and turn the sand as they are not club friendly (only negative on this course like many in S CA). Rough and OB areas are very penal. Greens are in very nice shape for chipping/putting and holding shots. Gina in the shop is great to deal with due to her great customer service. Starter as well. $54 for Sr rate is IMO a good deal.

Played today. When I arrived there was no one there except golf staff. Never saw anyone behind me on the front 9 and when I made the turn, no one on the first tee. No one in front of me on the back 9 and no one behind me. But when I finished there were about 50 women gathering for a tournament. Glad they let me play and no one mentioned the tournament to me when I checked in. Tee boxes were all fine, clean and tee acceptable. Fairways had good coverage starting about 50 to 75 yards out from each forward tee box. Guess they are conserving water? Coverage was good but not lush but they did give good lies and roll out. Traps were OK but could have been better. I was fortunate enough to miss a trap but they were clean and raked but the sand did not look very deep and I suspect not all of them would play very well. Rough on the outside of the fairways and on the hillsides was high and thick. It played difficult on those shots that I had to play out of. Greens were in nice shape all round. They chipped and putted well and held shots that were hit high. Customer service was excellent at all encounters. Gina in the pro shop is a great person to start your morning off with. Start early if possible as it got very warm towards the end of the round which I played in 2.5 H. $54 is the Sr rate with cart which is acceptable for this course being in OC. But $49 or 45 IMO would be better.

Played this AM under cool damp skies which added to a wet course. And we ran into aeration that had been planned but failed to happen until today. Nothing worse than trying to play on aerated fairways, let alone aerated greens. Especially when the fairways have not been cleaned up. Even the lady in the shop did not know that this was planned. Hit the first fairway and OK, from then on it was 5 pounds of mud on your shoes for the majority of the round. The only decent holes today were the par 3's. And they had also not cut the rough on the side hills of many fairways, so say goodbye to your ball when the rough is up to your ankles. I do like playing here but not under these conditions. Before I go back I will be asking questions on the conditions beforehand. Not great customer service in my opinion. And with the weather changing day to day (sun, cloudy, sun, etc) who knows how soon conditions will improve. Oh and before I go, the traps were pathetic. Either they need a new superintendent or more grounds crew. I really don't like writing reviews like this but the truth is important so others "know before they go." And no I won't rate the course because I would only make their rating tumble.

Played this AM in a great POP of 3 H. Happy to report the course is not in the shape this moment from the last post of 3/24. Thanks to the nice weather we have had over the last few weeks, the course is green/lush. We had no issues with tee boxes which were mowed and clean. Fairways have been mowed and were being mowed again today. We only had a few holes that were not mowed and those still gave great lies but slower roll out. The mowed ones gave great lies and really nice roll out. There still is a lot of high vegetation on the outside of the fairways and if your ball goes in, good luck finding it. And the rough along the fairways is still high enough to make you work to get your ball out. Sand traps were dry but still need work done on them IMO to soften them up to really be able to get under the ball. Greens were great. They held shots, released shots and chipped/putted wonderful all round. And they had great speed in the range of 9/10. One of our players had a great GIR day but a horrible 3 putt combination. But we still took his money. Gina in the pro shop is wonderful to work with and the starter is on top of things. $54 Sr rate and worth it a the moment.

I feel bad giving Westridge a poor review for its current condition because it's a very good and engaging layout and conditions will likely be far superior in a week or two, but I can only report what's going on right now and that may explain why its rating will likely be far lower than it actually deserves.

With the heavy rains just having ended, the course has mud pits all over. This would normally be fine and understandable, however they have not mowed any of the fairways in quite some time, so even when you hit middle of the fairway, your ball currently disappears into the rough. What made it even more frustrating was that it was Cart Path Only, so finding your ball was a challenge all day and then it was near impossible to gauge distances without taking a range finder and at least four clubs to where you thought your ball might be.

The rough was even longer - we're talking Torrey Pines during the US Open length and completely impossible to find balls that you had tracked the entire time. It's not exactly 'real' golf right now. We were also informed that bunkers were so swamped that they were not in play - free drop out of them. I noticed some were waterlogged, while others just appeared to have been ransacked for all their fluff. Just far from ideal, but again, sort of understandable.

Greens were actually in pretty nice shape and very receptive due to their softness, however quite a few of them had periphery areas that were either damaged or suffering some kind of fungus trauma. Avoid these areas at all costs.

As for the tee boxes, a bit on the soggy and soft side as well, but more alarming was far too many were quite crowned and difficult to get a flat spot. Again, far from ideal but this one seems like it's more on the course than the weather.

But again, this place will likely be in great shape in a few weeks, so long as the weather cooperates and we finally start with a dry spring. The layout here is very tough with lots of elevations, plenty of target shots, some very short but tricky greened par 3s, and no shortage of pucker up and hit it approaches that will require very precise distance control.

Sorry about the rating Westridge, but it's the current truth about the state of things!
