Played the Blacks (6666/72.9/135) with GDR23. POP was 3H, 30M in sunny, muggy conditions with a 1 club breeze most of the round. Really enjoy this course. Holes 13-17 are about as good a consecutive 5 hole stretch as you will find anywhere. Typical Pete Dye design with some raised greens, numerous mounds and massive waste bunkers. However, unlike Stadium, this course is fun to play and doesn't continually beat you up. The tees were mostly lush and well maintained. A few had been recently vericutt. Only some par 3's had a decent amount of divot damage. The fairways were mostly lush. A couple had been vericutt and only sporadic places with severe divots. The rough was lush but not too tall. It would grab your club but you could easily find you ball. The plentiful sand traps were well maintained. An odd thing is that the cart path runs the entire length of several waste bunkers. Therefore, you may well be playing off tire tracks if you hit into them. The Bermuda greens putted medium speed and were somewhat bumpy. Firm with few ball marks. Disappointing overall. Major drainage construction ongoing that is between holes 14/15. They are playing #14 short, only affects #15 if you go well left where you should not be anyway. Overall, this is a challenging layout and the conditions were very good except for the greens, which were mediocre. The customer service was very good. Cart gal around numerous times. Definitely recommended, this is a fun layout and one of my favorite courses to play.

Played her 8/19 at 230 with a POP around 3 hours. Was excited to get out here as its one of my favorites in the desert and it didn't disappoint.

Played her 8/19 at 230 with a POP around 3 hours. Was excited to get out here as its one of my favorites in the desert and it didn't disappoint.

Tees: Even with good coverage and minimal damage. Still the grass was overgrown (ala Nicklaus course) so hard to tee it up without a 4in tee.
Fairways: Yellow/Brown with great coverage. Ball sat up nicely.
Rough: Around 2 inches, didn't affect play greatly but was around a club. Even coverage.
Bunkers: Can't comment but looked fine.
Greens: Much better than Nicklaus course but still a little grainy. These are normal summer greens for the desert so I was fine with it especially since the putts held there lines here! Just slow as one would expect.

Overall a pleasure to play as always. Even in the crazy summer heat (109 while we played) the course is still great and in good shape. Would recommend.

After 36 in the morning yesterday at Cimarron, I found an incredible price for one of my favorite courses, La Quinta Mountain (see GolfNow forum thread for details). I played by myself starting at 1:57 and basically had the course to myself (to start, anyway). Starting on No. 10, I caught some groups, played through one, and then waited the rest of the way. POP was still great at around 3:20 or so. It was hot but not too bad and there was a nice breeze throughout much of the back nine to keep things tolerable.

From the parking lot/clubhouse, the course looked to be in really nice condition, but the greens ended up being a bit disappointing. I know it's summer and they have to be kept longer to survive, but they were inconsistent speed and cut throughout the course. They were all slow to medium-slow, but some were shaggier than others. Not terrible, but definitely a step down from Cimarron in the morning. They accepted full shots well. Fairways and rough were nice for August. Both the waste bunkers and standard bunkers were in really good condition. Tee boxes were good.

Another unfortunate development is there's a huge construction project taking place between the 14th and 15th fairways, which is the beginning of the marquee stretch of the course. There's a lot of grading going on and bulldozer-type vehicles parked on raw dirt. I called the pro shop this morning and a woman told me they're building some sort of flood plain. (From the look of things, I feared/still fear houses are being built between those two holes.)

Overall, very happy to get such a great deal on one of my favorite courses. Had the greens been more consistent, I would've been even happier.

Played on 12/30/16 as I was out in the desert for NYE. Tee'd off at 1130 and POP was 4:45. Service in the clubhouse/restaurant was great. Can't comment on the practice range (don't usually hit balls before a round) but putting green was great. As for the course: Tee boxes: Lush and full with little divots besides on par-3 (even then not a lot). Fairways: Dormant grass (painted green?) but coverage was excellent and no thinness too them. Rough: Pretty light, 1-2in, all yellow but easy enough to play out of. Consistent coverage. Bunkers: Wasn't in any but they looked fine. Fairway bunkers were better than most muni greenside ones. Greens: Amazing. Rolled true and medium-fast. I struggled having never played this course but they were receptive to well struck shots. Overall I rate it a 7.5-8. On top of the conditions, the views are breathtaking. Especially 13-16. Definitely recommended.

Played 10/21. My Dad and I decided to take a trip this weekend and we couldn't have picked 2 better courses to play (Played Indian Wells Celebrity 10/22). I thought everything was in amazing shape considering how hot it was out there. Most courses in San Diego are in shambles due to the heat but La Quinta was amazing. Everything from the tee boxes to fairways to green were in pristine condition. Will definitely play there again some day.

I've always wanted to play the Mountain course. I got to on Wednesday September 7th. The course design was great, but the conditions were poor. I played Silverrock earlier in the day, and the conditions there were excellent. Silverrock endured the same extreme summer as the mountain course, but fared much better. The greens were especially bad. I did like how the course cozied right up to the mountain; that was cool. I'm sure that when the course is in great shape it is outstanding, but today it was disappointing.

Had to play the last of the PGA courses in La Quinta so headed out 8/20 on a whim. Arrived at 9:30am and was able to tee off alone. That lasted until the 3rd hole. There was a 6 group tournament ahead playing hackers golf and not playing best ball!

Course was in good shape tee to green. As always, Mr. Dye putts together a very challenging course! IMO its a much better layout than the Dunes. Will be fun to play it again now that I'm familiar with the layout. My favorite of the 5 courses is the Norman course.

Tees were level with minor divot damage. Fairways were great. Balls sat up nice in the rough which was strange because its the same grass as the Stadium course and it seems to disappear there! Traps were good with just enough sand to get underneath the ball. Only a few had an upper crust. Greens were firm, rolled straight but were slow. Greens need to be a little furry this time of the year to beat the heat.

Greens were VERY slow and hairy....some dead areas on some greens. Some were in much better shape than others. Pop was just 3.5....course deserted. 111* reason why? Hahahha. Played on a teeoff.com deal for just $34. Soon they will be punching greens. Great design and plenty of water avail throughout the course. Only complaint was the swarm of flies ever present....front nine was very annoying ...back 9 not so much. Flies even bothered in the clubhouse.

Final round was Sunday 6/5 at LQ-Mountain Course. As others have noted, the layout and views are spectacular (except for #'s 10-13) which are basically crammed in between some neighborhoods. Front 9 is more wide open and flat. Back 9 starting with #14 is tighter and has more elevation changes. Greens are all on the small side here. Conditions have been covered in previous reviews so I won't re-hash them. So yesterday at Rams was 118 with lots of wind. Today was 112 with ZERO wind. NOT FUN! It was like standing in a sauna for 3.5 hours. Must have gone through 5 gloves during the round! BUT, in the end the golf and camaraderie was great! Scores were like the temps. HIGH!
