Teed off @ 8:42am on Thursday, May 15. Started on #10 due to course maintenance being done on the front side. Although it took 4 hours and 40 minutes to complete our round, we still were 5 minutes ahead of pace throughout the day. Go figure.

Course was in pretty good shape overall and while some things have changed for the better since I last played here (reduced greens fee), other items continue to be of concern. The efficiency at getting us to the first tee on time was top-notch. Glenn does his usual good job of overseeing the starter's responsibilities, in spite of his low-key, somewhat impersonal manner. He's a pleasant enough guy if you need to converse with him but, for some reason, looks totally bored with his job, giving one the impression that he'd rather not be there.

Tee boxes were in good shape but in urgent need of mowing. The grass height made me feel as if I were cheating out of the short rough by using a tee. That may be stretching it a bit but I just wanted to get my point across. If you've ever played Barona Creek then you know what a well-maintained tee box should look like.

Fairways were in very good shape but the rough, as has been the case for over a year now, is still barren and in disrepair. Particularly annoying are the areas with a Bermuda grass base that are pock-mocked by clumps of rye grass. Hit into one of these areas and you could find yourself with a ridiculous lie. Also, most areas of the fairways were quite wet; definitely a lot of water being thrown on the course these days. The temperature hit 102 degrees by the time we finished so this may have been a precautionary move by the greenskeeper.

The sand trap situation hasn't improved either although I am aware that it will take awhile before things improve. I felt as if I was hitting out of pancake batter that had been allowed to sit in the sun for a few hours. Can't understand why more courses don't make better choices as to the type of sand they use when initially designing and building a course. Sure would save a lot of expense and aggravation down the road I would think.

Another gripe I have relates to the "speed" of the greens. I've read the Eagle Glen GM's post regarding conditions at the course and his comment as to the reasoning for keeping the greens on the slow side. Sorry, but I would like to see these greens back to rolling like they did last year. The decision to reduce the speed of the greens has taken some of the enjoyment out of playing here for me. They don't need to be lightning fast but bumping them up to 10 or 11 on the Stimp, provided the pin positions are fair, would be a move in the right direction in my opinion. It seems to me that the slower greens have a tendency to be bumpier than the faster surfaces

Only saw the cart girl on two occasions, once on each nine. The food at the restaurant, something I look forward to when playing here, was excellent, as usual.

Considering that I was able to play for a very good online rate of $39, which helped offset the time and expense (gas) to make the trek from San Diego, I thoroughly enjoyed my day at Eagle Glen. It's a great layout, fun to play, and offers a fair yet challenging test for my game. However, I'm hopeful the current management staff will address the rough edges around the course in a timely fashion and get things back to where they belong.

Good day—

We here at Eagle Glen very much appreciate your patronage and want to keep you abreast of what is happening here at the course with regard to our playing conditions.

First, we have begun to transition our fairways and roughs from the over seeded Rye grass and back to Bermuda for the summer. This transition will certainly create some cosmetic issues with grass that will be brown in color. This is due to us lowering our mow heights to promote growth of the Bermuda grass. Chemical applications are also being performed to stimulate this transition.

Simultaneously, we had a severe problem with organic material that occurred in our irrigation lines. This prevented proper watering in some areas and has generated a quicker transition of the Rye to Bermuda than we were anticipating. This problem has been sourced, identified, and is in its final stages of being rectified.

We plan to begin adding sod to our stressed rough areas now that the season for Bermuda grass growth is near. This will begin later this month and continue well into the summer.

Certainly, the course is not as cosmetically appealing as we would like, but it will not affect the high level of playing conditions that we are trying to provide for our guests.

We are continuing the aggressive hand tilling and amending of our bunker sand. This will provide a softer and more consistent surface from which to play. This will continue all year long until we can repair all the bunkers properly some time next year.

Our Aeration process was a great success. Our greens have rebounded extremely well and the completed healing process is far ahead of schedule. We will always continue to verti-cut our greens and apply a light top dressing. This program helps us to provide you with the best putting surface we are able.

One note on our greens. We do purposely try to keep our speeds consistently around nine on the meter. This is due to our severe undulations and frankly to aid in a quicker Pace of Play.

Finally, I want to address the last two comments about the recent tournament. While we do not condone slow play and do everything to avoid it, ultimately it comes down to the players. All golfers should play ready golf and play within their skill level. If we all did this, then yes, all golf courses would play faster. This is not a new problem, nor is it solely at our facility. As for fivesomes, we will send them out when appropriate so that we do not clog the course with twosomes and threesomes that may be created by “short shows.” When we do this, we send maybe one per hour. This does not slow down play. The individual golfer’s ability to keep a ball in the fairway and play ready golf is what slows down play.

I agree with the comments about slow play and we are working hard with numerous scenarios to improve our pace. I myself work the first tee regularly to aid in this endeavor. On behalf of the staff, I apologize if you do not think we take this seriously and we are working diligently to always improve our guests’ experience.

We hope you appreciate our attempts at keeping our players well informed as much as we truly appreciate you continuing to make Eagle Glen your favorite course to visit and play.
