I played in the Pepsi event last weekend. I had only read about La Purisma -- and many times the Internet read on a course is better than the course itself. Not this time. This is a true, old-school championship layout. No Mickey Mouse holes. No trying to jam in a par 5 when a good, long par 4 would do. In fact, playing with two NCAA champions on the tournament's first day, I noted that neither of them had a real, solid chance to get home in two on any of the par 5's.

This is a great test of golf -- and it's an even greater one (in the true spirit of the game) when the wind kicks up in the afternoon. The greens are slick and true -- great undulations, and knowing where to land your approach shot is a must if you want to score. The one curiosity about it is that it's in the middle of nowhere, considering it's a first class golf facility and well maintained. My understanding is that the closing/ cut backs at the nearby Vandenberg Air base had a big impact on the local economy and the plans to build the corresponding development along the surrounding hills (not on the golf course, desert style) in the late 80s.

Get out there and play La Purisma. Seriously.

I played 36 on this course last week, the same day that a pro tournament was being held. One of the pros told me it was the hardest course they play, which included most of southern California. We started early, before the tourney, and didn't get much wind until the end of the 2nd round, and it was pretty calm anyway. Nice layout and walkable, although we used a cart to get in 36. Never had to wait, and didn't hold up the group behind us much either. Not much, if any, OB, and with it being dry it was easy to find balls when hit into the dry grass. If you hit it into the bushes or trees just give it up and pull out another ball. Very quiet and peacful, except for a few holes along the highway. Overall, a good experience.

A well maintained and challenging course in a beautiful setting. The doglegs, elevation changes, and a few blind shots contribute to the difficulty, but when the wind comes up in the afternoon this course can be a monster. Play it with the realization that you will not be having a career round, and you can have a great time.

Great layout and one of my favorite tracks around. Worth the 2 hour drive up. Course conditions were not quite what I would have hoped, the standard on high end daily fee courses is pretty high in both Santa BArbara and Ventura counties and I would say that the course conditions were below par versus others around like Cypress Ridge, Glenn Annie, Moorpark, Rustic, Tierra or Sterling Hills. A little dissapointment, but the layout and the surroundings more than make up for it.

In you’re going to play it, play it in the morning unless you enjoy a brutally tough course at 15 to 25 mph winds. We played out there yesterday and found the course in excellent condition. Heard from the guys in the shop that they are no longer a host to Q-School and that they moved it out to PGA West. Too bad. This is as good of test of golf as I’ve played anywhere. Great tranquil setting, demanding yet fair tee shots, well protected greens, and long. You can walk it but I suggest a cart. After 6 holes you’ll be glad you did. Absolutely love 2,3,4,5, stretch. Worth the green fee right there.

If you have not yet played La Purisima, you have not played the best course in Southern California. Period. Plenty of tee boxes to keep everyone happy, and for you tough guys, get back to the tips, catch a little wind (normal after 11 AM or so on most days) and knock yourselves out. No better course layout or conditions in So Cal. Good elevations, great views, huge layout, terrific views. Just you and nature. Shop is great. Practice facility is great. Putting greens give you a true indication of what to expect from this level of par/slope rating. Bring every club in your bag, and get ready to hit all of them. Rewards shaping ability, especially off the tee. Just punched on July 5th, so give it a while.

Played mid-morning Jun 23. I've played a lot of the SoCal public and private courses, and this is, in my opinion, the best overall track. A pure golf experience in a terrific setting (with no homes on the course either). A straightforward course; one of the best layouts in Calif. No tricks or gimmicks. The course is in top shape, and the afternoon winds make it more than challenging. The greens are fast, smooth and fair. It's no wonder why the Tour qualifiers are held here - it's a tournament qualtiy experience. It's worth the drive and more.
