The facility is aged but well maintained as work was being performed during our round. The practice area does not have a driving range but the putting greens, chipping area and driving nets did the job. The comfortable carts were very nice and quick but lacked any GPS. The rough was the perfect length to slow wayward shots and allowed for a decent shot. The fairways had good coverage with divot mix placed throughout the entire course. The fairways were tight in sections with great roll on well struck tee shots. The well groomed and trimmed traps were mostly damp with very thin to thin sand coverage. Hitting from them could be difficult if you found your ball in one. The aprons around most greens was thinner Kikuyu which was difficult to chip from with most electing to use the short sticks. The greens were great with total coverage. They held shots good but did have roll out without a lot of spin. They were very quick with unseen breaks. Many were very small and well protected with the pin placements. The layout had a few water features and fairway bunkers strategically placed which came into play. There were many trees lining the holes from start to finish which made finding a ball near one with the leaves difficult or impossible. There were some elevation changes in the layout but the course is definitely flat enough to walk. The fairways were generally wide forgiving. The front nine has three par three holes playing to a par 35. The back nine at a par 37 was 400-500 yards longer and more challenging. Definitely a course our group would play again given the chance. » Close Early afternoon tee time 4.5 hour round. The rates have continued to increase since JC took over management of this course. The parking lot has some of the smallest spots I've dealt with at any course ever so beware. The carts all have decent GPS but ours shut down on us while driving down the cart path?? The tee boxes were a little shaggy with good coverage and limited divot damage. The rough doesn't really come in to play since there is very little of it to find. Many forced carries from start to finish with thick stuff off the fairways. The fairways were mostly tight fairly dry bermuda. You will encounter sections of other types of grass mostly around the greens. The dry fairways provided great roll if you could keep the ball in them. Many of the holes slope from left to right so shot placement is critical. The middle of the fairways roll so much that a shot there can easily end up in the rough or out of bounds. The traps ranged from hard packed dirt/sand to thick damp stuff around the greens. The greens are fairly large but can be hard to read for some. The quickness of them slowed as the round progressed into the late afternoon. The layout is challenging and can be frustrating for those who haven't played here before. The weekday afternoon rates are reasonable but the morning rack rates are a little steep. This area of Northern SD County doesn't have a lot to choose from in the way of courses anymore and most have increased their rates because of this. » Close Early morning four round walking on the Oaks and Creek nines. The cart fee is steep at $25 per player to ride. The tee boxes were all in good condition with the par three holes somewhat beat up with divots. The sixth hole on the Oaks is in the process of being revamped. The par three is maxed out at 170 yd until the work is complete. There were a few trees along the Oaks fairways that have been removed or need to be removed as they have broken off or come down with the weather recently. The fairways all have great coverage with thick green damp grass that doesn't allow much roll from the tee. The rough was being mowed as we played but was still extremely thick and littered with grass clippings. Finding a ball in the rough is still difficult and hitting from it can be a struggle. The traps were all raked and damp but some were quite shaggy around the edges. The greens on the Oaks were noticeably firmer and quicker than those on the Creek. The firmer Oaks greens did not hold shots as well as the Creek nine. All greens had total coverage and few ball marks. The walking rates are still in line with other local course offerings less the cart. It is a pretty easy walk on the Oaks and Creek nines. » Close Early morning four hour weekday round. The staff is always friendly and good at what they do. The carts are hanging in condition wise but aging. They do have basic GPS which is pretty accurate. There is no cell service in the hills where the course is located. The tee boxes were all in nice condition with a couple being slightly sloped and thin. They've finally figured out the right amount of water for the first tee as it had always been messy which was a nice way to start. The many forced carries were damp but did not have much water running through them. The rough is fairly thick but short enough to find your ball and easy to put a good swing on it. Total green grass coverage on all fairways with some dormant Bermuda popping through with the warmer weather. Great lies from start to finish. The traps are very well groomed but lack enough sand and are mostly damp compact with pebbles. Hitting from the traps is mixed depending on the one you find yourself in. The greens were in fantastic condition with total coverage. The green speed was slightly slower than usual this round but held shots extremely well in comparison to every other round here. They had put more water on most of the greens which was evident from the visible ball marks. Usually good approach shots would often times bounce through the green but not anymore. Hopefully it remains the same in the future. The course was in the best condition I've seen it in for many years. The weekday rack rates are a bit steep for the area but understandably with JC Resorts now managing the course. Worth a drive up the hill for a round once in awhile. » Close Early morning 4.5 hour round on a very green course. The staff faces are very familiar over the years and do a great job keeping things going. The practice facilities are good and conveniently located. The carts are probably about five years old with no GPS and some drive like an old Chevy. The tee boxes are all level with total coverage but were a little firm at times. The rough is not very long where there is some and easy enough to hit from. The fairways have real nice coverage and were just cut earlier in the morning which left clippings everywhere. The over seeded fairways were covered with fertilizer as well and slightly damp. You would have to lift, clean and place nearly every shot. Many golfers were too lazy to fill their divots in the new growth fairway which was discouraging to see. The traps here have always been lacking sand and compact wet sand and dirt. They were no different today. The greens have really nice total coverage but were still a little bumpy from the fall maintenance, The greens held shots nicely and were extremely quick (we forgot how quick). There were a few ball marks but not too bad compared to the number of unfilled fairway divots. The lakes come into play on several holes and at times you have to deal with all the ducks and geese on the course. The rates were hiked up for the holiday weekend and the usual walking rate was not offered. The location and course conditions make this a good place for a round with the option of the two courses. » Close
