A little late on my review as I've been away but here you go... First time out at Rustic last Saturday May 23rd. I've always wanted to play this course and finally made the 1 1/2 hr drive and boy was it worth it. Best links course I've ever played and definitely in my top 5 courses ever played. My buddy says it's the closest to Bandon Dunes you'll get and he's played Bandon quite a few times.
Anyhow, driving up the long road up to the clubhouse I was checking out the front 9 and it looked pure. Check in was fast and easy as we pre paid online. Range and putting green are open, (Ventura County) which was nice. When I got on to the practice green I knew it was going to be a tough day with the flat stick lol... All 4 of us walked and it was such a great day. Got to the first tee and what a view. Wide open fairway to start the round. Tee boxes were all nice and level, we rode the blues. Fairways were in great shape and had a lot of run out to them. I got 50 yds of run out on some of them. A lot of little pot bunkers to lookout for along the way as well. Luckily I had buddies that knew the layout or I would've been in a lot more trouble throughout the day. Was never in any waste area or bunker so can't review those but they looked difficult. Greens were running and if you're not on the right side of the green you're in big trouble. Trust me I learned the hard way. I believe I had 6 3 putts and one 4 putt, yikes... greens were hard and not very receptive and you couldn't tell where the green started and the fairway/apron ended. Hence a links course. Very hard to chip around the greens unless you are a great wedge player. I used putter quite a bit.
All and all I will definitely be back and will frequent this track more often to get more familiar with it. I'm happy with my 92 my first time here considering how tough it is. If you haven't played it you need to check it out for yourself.» Close
