Well, it looks like if we want the High School in my district to have a golf team that Steve and I will have to coach it! We have coached soccer and softball but never golf. I teach elementary so feel a little out of my zone with high schoolers (although I've taught pretty much all of them! LOL). To complicate it even more it's a co-ed team! Does anyone have any advice? Any resources we should check out?

Apparently I'll need to find shirts, a couple sets of clubs, balls, etc. We're a small poor district and they'll pay for transportation and practice fees but everything else has to be scrounged or bought with fundraising.

ACK! What have we done!! HELP!

Chris

As for clubs you need to ask one of the local manufactures if they have some used clubs they can package up attractively for the school. I am sure they have a PR department that can say yes or no. Asking for used might be a better tactic.

Shirts are more problematic. Not hard to find, but you need to know how many in what sizes and has the artwork been done for them to be made team shirts.

That's really admirable! Way to go, you guys!

A childhood friend of mine's dad was a high school golf coach (and teacher, and principal, and athletic director, etc.) for many years. If you want, I'll see if I can connect with him to see if he can share some tips with you.

Chris, my sister owns a shop in Redondo Beach that could monogram the shirts for you if necessary. I can ask her to cut you a sweet deal. Let me know ...

Range time and time golfing is the thing to focus on with an emphasis on playing golf.

If it's a coed team when does their season start? Girls typically start now with boys starting in the spring.

If it's like it used to be when I played HS golf it's 9 holes. Team score 5 players. Lowest total score wins but everybody plays. Talk to a golf range/golf course to get discounted student rates and call their course your home course. Talk to the golf pro there to see if he is willing to volunteer his time. Perhaps get them as long/short term customers.

Good Luck!

Shirts and equipment can be gathered through donations and/or fundraisers - local course mens/womens clubs were always a great source for me when I needed something. They loved the thought of growing the game and usually donated clubs, balls, bags and even cash, towards the team on a yearly basis.

I had three levels of players:
Advanced players with their own coach. I would always speak with the coach and reinforce what was being worked on, but never introduce any new thoughts.
Beginners I would break down to the base fundamentals.
Mid level I would tweak large flaws as needed.
Balance was the number one issue I noticed personally year after year with all levels of player except the elite

All team members were constantly coached on course management and strategy. Including target selection(center green-fat part of fairway), club selection(take the extra club on approaches and not always driver off the tee), risk/reward avoidance(chipping out is 1 shot bouncing off the tree will cost more) et al. We even had yardage guides(our playbook) for each course and hole so players knew where to aim, what club to hit and what to avoid.

Practice was actually a practice like every other sport. Over the years I saw so many coaches say - hit balls, now putt, now go play.
Whereas we-
started with stretches
had drills with GOALS and instruction on how to play the shot (ex-lag putting get four of five into club length then short putting make five of five from that distance and so on with chipping/pitching/sand)
and as previously mentioned had our playbook with strategy that we would review
The removal of blow up scores for individuals by strengthening their putts, chips, sand shots, and mental awareness helped the team score significantly.

Best of luck and enjoy!
