This hot weather is taking a toll on my golf hats.
Any tips on cleaning my hats?

I used to just wear them until they got really bad and throw them away. I tried putting one in with the laundry and it was cleaner but also never seemed the same after that traumatic day.

Hand wash it with Dawn dish soap and put it in a cap form to dry. Works great!

I usually just wash them with a normal load, but not hot water or bleach. Toss in the dryer for five minutes and then put it on for a few minutes to make sure it remembers the size and shape of my melon. Works pretty well for sizing. Then, just let air-dry overnight, and good to go. I will admit that it doesn't do anything much for getting ride of hard-core sweat stains. So, these links may help a bit more...

Whenever I get a new hat I will spray the inside of the band and outside with KIWI Protect All. It forms a layer so sweat will not stain the hat. I have had great results and have hats that are 2 years old and still no stains. Remeber "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

Once sweat stains appear, I've never had any luck with any of the prescripted remedies. Similar to Lary1, I have had success with a preventative spray called Hat Saver. You spray it on when the hat is new and it seems to work well.

I put mine in the dishwasher using a plastic hat mold shaper thingy that's specific for cleaning hats it helps keep the shape of the bill the way you want it. I got mine at Bed Bath and Beyond

I've done and tried a number of things. I have about 30 hats maybe more.. The best is to:

1. Protection- Rust-oleum spray on both inside and outside of the cap.
2. If not protected, in this kinds of heat, soak the hat in water when playing- it minimizes the salt to fabric.
3. Washing- I soak it 10 at a time in washing detergent and softener for a 8 hours or so- cold water so the bands don't get curly. Hang dry.
4. Fold them like they have in the pro shop.

...you're good to go.

I have tried the washing machine, but found that the dish washer works better, providing you remove them before the drying cycle. The washing machine worked fine as well, but on a gentle cycle.

As a hat aficionado, The only thing that works for me is the Hat spray. I use the Lids.com brand and never have any issues. For the hats that had stains before the spray I could never get them clean without affecting the shape. I wear fitted hats almost 100% of the time and dish washer and washing machine always messes them up.
