Member Since: February 4, 2005 Favorite Golfer: Natalie, Fred, Big John Favorite Golf Course: Robinson Ranch | Monday February 8, 2010 7:52 AM There is a nice little article on about.com. It comes with a quiz like this one.http://golf.about.com/cs/historyofgolf/a/antiquequizintr.htm mashie...5 iron niblick...9 iron baffie...4 wood spade mashie...6 iron brassie...2 wood mashie niblick...7 iron cleek...1 iron mid mashie...3 iron spoon...3 wood mid iron...2 iron mashie iron...4 iron. The article comes with a cheat sheet so you will get 100% on the quiz. It also states that these wood shafted, mostly pre 20th-century clubs are most closely equivalent to the modern clubs in loft and use, but cannot be considered to be the same. Sometimes my 9 iron is a nibbler. Or is a dribbler? Hey, it sometimes happens especially on short par threes. [[Edited by kviser on Friday February 12, 2010 10:25 AM]] |

Favorite Golf Course: Any fairways, greens | Thursday February 11, 2010 10:45 PM today's 5th grader who plays golf might and most can use a p'ter better than us.... lol the post was to help show us what our past was all about. the past golfers played the Hickory Clubs, with strange names. if you didn't know, you should.... knowing a few things about the game is a good thing, plus its cool to learn something new and research it a bit. all the rules we use today came from that same time period and have changed little. . AWESOME for getting out of deep wet grass with a distance still to go! Small dense head on it does the trick. Plus- it just looks cool! :-) |

Member Since: November 5, 2006 Favorite Golfer: All Of You on GK... Favorite Golf Course: Any fairways, greens | Saturday February 13, 2010 8:33 AM last yr I acquired a set of hickory sticks almost complete, w/putter.they have group up here now that play 9 holes with just them, some feel a little sketchy hitting, I'm thinking there worth more as a reminder than playing with them. there really cool though. every time I see movies like bagger vance or for the love of the game and see them using them, it only makes me more impressed with what those guys did back then and how they got it done. . Good for some blank stares.I wish I had a set of hickories. Back when I was a kid, nearly every second hand / junk shop had barrels full of them for $1 each. Now they are a lot more scarce and much more expensive. http://www.hickorygolfers.com http://www.hickorygolfassociation.org/ |
