Just played this morning and the conditions of the fairways, greens, and bunkers were great!!! The tee boxes weren't in great shape and all the tee markers were lumped together (Gold, White, and Blue) for most of the holes. The rough is in pretty bad shape about 15 yards off the fairway due to carts only being allowed to drive on the rough. Inside the ropes the rough looks pretty good.

The USGA has set up shop and has apparently been making changes right away. On hole #14, the entire left side used to be vegetation. Now it has all been ripped out (or should I say being ripped out). One of our partners ventured over to that side and found quite a few balls so if you are visiting Torrey South in the next few days, go collect your share.

All in all, I was impressed with the conditioning after the overseeding. Unfortunately, I wanted to play from further back on the tees but the City seems to be doing productive things with the conditioning.

The conditions have improved dramatically over the past few months. Most of the major rennovations seem to be complete. All the bunkers appear to have new sand. The greens were also as nice as I have seen them in several months. The fairways were okay, but there are still some spots were there is new sod, new seed, and some bare patches.

Tees sanded. Greens are a little on the slow side and a little bumpy, but there’s plenty of grass and they hold just fine. Fairways for the most part are ok in the landing areas however there is still additional sod planted in many areas that must be played as ground under repair with mandatory relief. Bunkers all seem to have new sand. All of the old 200 yard, 175 yd 150 yd markers in the fairway have been removed. Those visitors’ rates are to high given the courses present condition. It’s just not worth it. The course will be finished someday. (I hope)

Played June 6. 2:30 tee off, no one in front for 2 holes. We didn’t catch anyone until the 11th, and played in 4 hr 20 min.

I would now upgrade the South to “fair condition”. The extensive sod replacement has begun to take over. There are still many areas of the fairways and rough that have been severely thinned out to make room for the uniform turf the U.S.G.A. is apparently pushing for and hopefully will be successful. There has been extensive tree trimming on some holes with #6 being the most notable. The entire right side brush and the trees have been really trimmed down. I barely recognized the hole, but liked the changes. It more enticing to try to play it over the canyon now, I think the plan is to open up the entire right side to make it more playable and set up better as a really long par 4 for the 2008 Open.

The greens overall were in remarkably good condition. Lots of grass but this time out were pretty smooth and rolled on average a little quicker than they looked. They are better than they have been in a really long time. The greens are playable and hold well. They were in far better condition than the course is right now. The bunkers were for the most part in good condition. Unfortunately I was in 8 of them.

Still not worth the full visitor rate, but if it were the only place I could to play I would schedule it at the city rate.

The only good parts of this course are its famous name and great views. Won't make this mistake again.

Played the South Course today, what great views the course has, but the condition of the course leaves alot to be desired. Unfortunately it seems like a municipal course. Their are alot of renovations going on. They are laying alot of sod, and there are alot of bare spots on the fairways. The bunkers, which are everywhere need sand added, and the greens are no better than any local course you play. I'm sure it will be ready for the Open in 2008, but for now the conditions are a negative. It is a fun layout though.

The course is indeed under renovation. There are major changes in turf conditions underway. Removing certain kinds and replacing with just one for uniformity. There is large scale turf removal in numerous locations, around bunkers, in fairways and landing areas. There are bare spots in fairways and tight lies in many others. Greens had a lot of grass, thick and bumpy. Slow against the grain. The most interesting change was the removal of the water hazard on #11. The drainage channel fronting the green has been under grounded and the area is now covered with sod. Personally I think it makes for a prettier hole.
Those players where the old hazard was in play are probably thrilled. There should be some adjustment for visitors rates, wow not nearly in good enough condition to pay the full rate but the condition is posted and people still are waiting in line to play? I did.
