Well, it's got to be said.

Rustic Canyon has been and will continue to be what I consider my "home" course, but the conditions have deteriorated significantly over the past year. The fairways have gotten patchy in the moderate to high traffic areas, the rough is spotty, and there are large areas that used to be turf that are now simply desert hardpan (13 comes to mind)

For my dollar, I really hope they get their act together and figure out a solution to the conditioning problems. The course gets a lot of play, yes, but there's got to be something else going on here.

The greens are for the most part decent, and the collars were better than I thought they would be upon first seeing the fairways, but the fairways and rough are borderline unacceptable.

It's a shame, too - the conditions are a far cry from even 2 years ago when you could count on fairways that rolled like carpet and generally consistent and challenging rough.

Layout-wise, it's still the best public course in southern california...but the deterioration in conditioning is troubling.

I like this course because it offers the opportunity for a different playing style than most of the other Southern California courses. The golfer can use his or her pitch an run shot to the extreme. This is not possible on many of the older courses around Southern California because of the type of grass that has taken over. On such courses you have to fly it directly to the green. The difference in the nines offers a great warmup for the back nine which is much tougher. Truly a unique experience, but if you are not used to a "running game type of golf" don't expect a good score the first time out. The course will grow on you with course knowledge.

It is not an easy course for sure, but it is well designed and makes you actually think and plan your shots. If you hit your 7 iron 155 yards, and you have 155 to the hole you need to think about hitting an 8 or even a 9.

This place is a joke! Granted the conditions were not the best they could have been, but this place is just golf at its worst. Lots of blind shots, greens that are impossible to get the ball close on, and it goes on and on. Its almost as if the designer wanted to spite good golfers by making holes which good shots are not rewarded and bad shots just cause lost balls. I will never play here again. EVER

I hadn't played the course in a while and I forgot how good the layout was. I was a little disappointed in that they had verticut the greens and put on a thin layer of top dressing two days ago. It caused the greens to be a little bumpy, but didn't affect play too much. The fairways were spotty. Very plush in some areas and thin in others. I think that is to be exepected somewhat during this time of year. Overall, I really like the course and won't wait so long to go back.

Played this course on saturday, 9/16. True links style course like the kind you'd see in Scotland. Greens extend out. Beautiful layout, greens are extremely tough on some wholes. Some tiered. We played in the morning at 8:00 am, by 10:00 am it became extremely windy, impossible conditions. Staff though was very nice. Try the tri tip sandwich after your round, best I've had.

It's a learning experience to play a "Links" style course, and one a looking a playing again and again. The staff is excellent and the couse was in fine shape. Keep up the great conditions.

Comments below are well stated, as a walker here, there can be alot of guessing (especially if you forget a scorecard as there are no signs to tell you distances at tee box and trying to find small sprinklers in fairways can be annoying.
