Played Avila Beach again on 7/20/11 around noon. Starter had us start at #10 so we didn't mind the view of the bay as we were teeing off. Due to school being out, you can see many people enjoying the day walking, riding, tanning all aournd so it can get a little distracting. However, compared to a year ago condition of fairways and greens were much improved. Greens are tightly cut and roll true. However, they seems to roll a lot slower than they looked. Course may be a little too short if playing white but if you play the blue tees, it's definitely a challenge with tight fairways and small hard greens. It's a great "couples vacation" type of course.
Enjoyed ourselves and look forward coming back next year.

My first time to play this course. Played in the afternoon on a Saturday in March 2011. It had rained in the morning, and I was the only golf on the course in the afternoon. They only charged me the nine hole fee because of the conditions. My wife did not feel like playing, so she rode along. We had a blast having the place to ourselves, other than sharing it with peacocks, wild turkeys and deer! The golf was challenging & fun, with quite a few blind shots. We can't wait to go back.

This course advertises "meticulously groomed fairways and greens" and that they stress customer service. I played Avila Beach on 4-3-11, while on a coastal golf trip with friends. The course is neither groomed nor is it customer service oriented. We arrived an hour early to hit the range and loosen up after a 4+ hour drive. There is a range, but the starter explained that they didn't have any range balls. WOW!!!??? The starter was a nice, yet somewhat confused, guy who did get us out a little early. This course is only missing one thing...goats. The rough was inconsistent, clumpy and unkept, the fairway grass was long and uncut and the greens were bumpy and slow. The layout itself is the mystery to me. Without going into great detail, I will say that I have played courses all over the country and never seen anything like this. The only thing missing was a rubber putter and a brightly colored ball to hit into the clown's mouth on 18. The course is just plain old weird, including the par 5 where you hit through what looks like a man-made wedge cut into a hillside. Additionally, in several placed throughout the course, there was rancid stinking accumulated water and mud. All of this for $84 with a cart? I give Avila Beach Golf Resort a 2 on a 10 scale. They get a 2 only because I was golfing with great friends so we made a good time out of it. Spend your money elsewhere.

Played Sunday - 3/14/11. Was told a tournament was starting soon and it was crowded on the front but moving quickly. BOY WERE THEY WRONG! After I passed the first five-some, I did a quick scan and the play order went a five-some followed by a two-some, another two-some, a single (me) and the previous five-some. Effective marshaling was needed. Paired myself with one of the two-somes and zipped by everyone else b/c they stopped at the turn.

The course was in average condition for this time of year. Lots of areas washed about by tides needed immediate work. A few areas of ground in repair but hopefully they're serviced before spring sets in. Greens were fast, firm and true.

Did not warrant a $97 green fee on the weekend. Will not play again at this price.

Played 6/21/10. Front nine seemed short, tight and somewhat hilly. Nothing special about the front 9 except for running into couple of deers on the 9th hole. Guess they've been there for a while. ... Continue »

Truly enjoyed back nine as the course is flatter and it has great views of the avila beach and the rivers(?) that feeds it. View of the short 18th hole alone was worthy of the green fee. A must play in Central Coast.

Part of my Central California Coast vacation tour! Since I live in the Inland Empire, it doesn't really matter what shape the course is in here - its 25' cooler than where I play!!

Enjoyed the round - took a while since we kept catching a slow foursome. Few if any distance-to-pin markers. Just the standard 150 yard mini-tree marker. If you want to get faster rounds, mark the sprinklers, paint the cart path, erect some 100 yard stakes etc - how hard is that?
Got a 2-for-1 coupon and that made everything OK. But still?

Played Sat 10/11 in the afternoon. Customer service is great. Very friendly people. We were expecting to see several ocean view holes but it didn't. Front nine is same old golf view but the back nine did have several nice views. Several holes with narrow fairways. Need accurate tee shots. It also has several blind tee shots. If you know the course, this is not that difficult course. Since we were new to this course, we all had difficulties.
Plus the winds... :-(
Fairways are in good shape. Greens are fast and firm.
Need more visible distance markers or install GPS.
We had a coupon to play Blacklake and Avila Beach for $99. We would hate to pay full price to play this course.
Overall we all had good times and enjoyed the course.
