Played Spanish Bay yesterday in my match with Sbarajasjr. The morning started out with pouring rain so we elected to skip the range. By the time our tee time came around the rain stopped and we made it to the 15th before it started back up. The nice thing about Spanish Bay is it drains very well. Other than a few puddles of standing water here and there, for the most part the fairways and greens were dry.

Course remains in excellent condition. The recent rains have helped “green” up the few areas on the fairways that were starting to turn a little brown. Fairways were easily a 9+ rating. Greens rolled perfect though at a medium-slow speed due to the morning rain. Obviously, the greens were very receptive to approach shots and allowed the player to get aggressive on chip and pitch shots.

Tee boxes were also a 9-10. Perfectly level, lush, and divot free. Due to the rain, the sand traps were wet with the sand compacted.

Spanish Bay is always and enjoyable walk with the constant ocean views and phenomenal course conditions.

Played Spanish Bay on 2/29/20. Course conditions remain in great condition as described in my previous reviews. The one thing I would like to add for those planning on playing Spanish Bay this year. With the extreme dry winter we are having here in the Peninsula, they have already started to pull water from Spanish Bay to give to the other courses (Pebble and The Glass). By this summer, the fairways at Spanish Bay are going to have some thin and some brown spots.

It is a “links” course and will play as such this summer. Just a heads up is all.

After some horrible wedge shots and a non performing putter last week, I benched the starting Ghost putter and headed back out to Spanish Bay early this morning with the backup in hand. The weather was absolutely gorgeous. Sun was out early and not a breath of wind on morning. We were a twosome and the first out on the course so POP was not an issue. We finished in about 3.5 hours.

As my previous review stated the course is in fantastic shape. Easily a 9+ from tee to green. Greens, fairways, tee boxes and sand traps were all phenomenal. Greens rolled at a medium-fast pace and easily held well struck shots.

Entire staff is genuinely friendly and the beverage cart was out right out of the gate coming around a handful of times throughout the round.

Spanish Bay is an all around great course with fantastic views. I’m happy to say that the putter and wedges performed very well today. Unfortunately, it took me 7 holes to get the full swing into rhythm (5 lost balls) so the score was still a couple north of 90. Oh well. It was still a very enjoyable morning. For my first outing of 2020 at Spanish Bay the course did not disappoint. The views are always spectacular here and the swell was up making the waves in the background even more impressive. With ocean views on 17 of the holes the scenery is never dull at Spanish Bay. Add in the half dozen holes right on the water and it makes for a fabulous outing.

Course conditions were top notch. Tee boxes and fairways were just short of a perfect 10. The only thing holding the fairways back from a perfect rating were a few damp spots. They were small and really not in play but while walking in the fairway I noticed a couple areas throughout the day that were damp. Other than that the fairways were a dark emerald green and lush. They were an absolute joy to hit off of.

Greens were smooth as silk with very few pitch marks noticeable. Greens have some severe undulations so getting a ball to hold can be tricky at times. They rolled at a medium fast pace.

Sand traps were also very nice. They have pure white fluffy sand. I did land in one that was a little damp. Given it rained the previous night, it’s understandable.

The one ding on the course was the skirt area to the side and behind the greens. The “rough” in these areas was only about 1” deep but patchy at times. I struggled on a few holes getting clean contact with my ball just off the green.

Other than the course is in excellent condition. Of course the restaurant/bar overlooking the course and the ocean is also well worth stopping at afterwards.

As a reminder, there isn’t a range at Spanish Bay but you can go up the road and use the range at Spyglass Hill or Pebble Beach. Spanish does have a large practice putting green with some undulations on it to get you prepared for the greens out on the course. Also, for those taking a cart, it’s cart path only.

Played Spanish Bay this afternoon on a cool fall day. Course remains in fantastic shape. Most of the tee boxes were a 9 with only a couple being a little shaggy. Fairways are top notch as well. They remain deep green and lush without a bare or thin spot to be found. Greens were fantastic. Very smooth and pitch mark free. Greens are diabolical with every green having a ton of undulations. Every green was 9+ rating.

Rough was also lush. About 2-3 inches deep. Challenging but manageable. Most of the sand traps were excellent. I found several bunkers today. Both green side and fairway. Only one green side bunker was a little thin. Others were great to excellent to perfect!

I had an afternoon tee time and zipped through the first 10 holes then caught the masses. It didn't really back up until the 15th at which point it became a waiting game on every shot.

The wind was mild all day which made the finishing holes very manageable. Spanish Bay is always a great walk with the numerous ocean views throughout the entire course. A highly recommended track at anytime but definitely a must play with the current great conditions.

Weather this week has been absolutely gorgeous here in the peninsula. Today was no exception. Teed off a little after 10:30 in perfect warm sunny weather. Where as last time out at Spanish Bay, I never saw the sun, today was the complete opposite. Wind did kick up for the last few holes but when you’re out on the open ocean, that’s to be expected. Course was perfect and apparently the word got out as it was packed. Even Spyglass up the hill which had recently aerated their greens was super busy. I had to wait for a spot on the range. Back down to Spanish Bay and even with the busy course we managed to finish in 4.5 hours which is good for these courses. Condition wise, the track is in perfect shape right now. Greens are a 9.5. Perfectly smooth, divot free, and held well struck shots. They rolled at a medium fast face. Could have been a touch faster but that’s nitpicking. Greens at Spanish Bay are large but have several undulations and severe slopes. Being on the right tier is key. Fairways were also near perfect. Easily a 9 if not a 10. Dark green and lush without a thin or brown spot to be found on the course. First cut of rough is manageable. Lush and only about 2-3” thick. After that and you’re in native no mans land. Tee boxes were level, lush and also fairly divot free. I had my weekly quota of bunkers on Friday so I’m happy to say I avoided ALL greenside bunkers. Was in two fairway bunkers and both were fine. With ocean views on 16 of the holes and solid conditions all around, it’s a definite must play. I took a ton of pictures and posted them on the GK App.

Played Spanish Bay today with a great friend from West Virginia. A little bit wind-burned at the end of the day, but we enjoyed this challenging layout. The course was in excellent condition with the exception being the sand in several of the bunkers that we visited was quite thin. For the price, this really isn't okay - but we'll overlook it since our games are more flawed than the golf course.

We played from the white tees, so the course wasn't extraordinarily long, but remained plenty challenging. The rough was pretty deep and the ball really sat down. You can not be on the wrong side of the greens on this golf course or your score card is going to look like an SAT score. Putting greens were in really good shape (as they should be) and VERY difficult. There are 3-putts looming on every hole if you are in the wrong spot.

We were paired up with another golfer that had paid for a caddie. This was the first time I have ever played a round where anyone had a professional caddie, and I must say I think it was a complete waste of the gentleman's money. The caddie did not really provide the assistance I would expect - other than carrying the golf bag and giving a few pointers. He was terrible at reading the greens, was often not accurate with distances, and generally didnt seem interested in being there. On top of that, he was not exactly an eloquent conversationalist. My buddy and I had planned on tipping him at the end of the round if he had proven to be a value add in any way. Needless to say, that money got spent in the pro shop instead.

Played Spanish Bay this morning on a chilly, foggy and breezy day. We never saw the sun the entire day but it didn't take anything away from the great views and spectacular course conditions. In fact this may be the best I've ever seen the course. When I was here a few weeks ago they were starting to dust the greens with a light amount of sand. They have completely healed and were a 9.5-10. Smooth, fast and easily holding well struck approach shot. Fairways were a excellent as well. Very green and lush throughout.

No issues with the tee boxes and the sand traps were superb. Beverage cart was out and about and for the rest of the month they are allowing carts out on the fairway but I still walked as it allows you to soak in the constant views of the Pacific Ocean.

Played Spanish Bay this morning after a bit of schedule change due to heavy rain the last few days and a tournament at Spyglass today. Soooo, off to Spanish I go. used the range up at Pebble (Spanish Bay doesn't have it's own range but you can use either Pebble's or The Glass). Range was on mats and will be until after the US Open. They do offer choice of TP5's or Project (a) balls for the range.

On to Spanish Bay on a sunny and delightful morning. Wind free for the first 8-10 holes then a bit of wind on the finishing holes. Tee boxes were excellent. An easy 9+ and that includes the par 3 tees. Fairways were also in great shape ranging between 8-9. I was in two greenside bunkers and both had excellent white semi-fluffy sand. A bit damp from all the recent rain but still excellent to hit out of.

The greens..... After the first semi easy green the rest have severe undulations. They are in the process of doing a light sanding of the greens. We had the front nine clear and they rolled smooth at a medium fast pace. The back nine had already been hit with the sand but still rolled at a medium slow speed. They were in the process of dusting the front greens as we were finishing. It probably won't take more than a week or two for them to fully recover.

I walked but for May and June they are allowing carts out on the fairways for the first time. Just not this week (due to rain).

All in all the course is in great shape and worth playing. With all the great views it's easy to forget about all (4) three putts.
