I'm slightly biased with the more than above-average rating because I enjoy courses that are out in the open without homes lining every single fairway. You will see a few homes, but they are not stacked on top of the fairway and you need a big miss to bring them into play.

The views on this course are fantastic. In terms of quality, sure there are better courses in the area. In terms of value, this is one of the best you can find. Pace of play is a common issue due to a very lax marshall system, but the summer nights in Colorado make it feel like you don't want to leave. I would play this course for the back 9 alone.

15th hole is an absolute beauty looking at the mountains facing West. One of my favorites.

This course only struggles with quality control around the sand traps and greens. Some lips are non-existent on traps. The greens themselves are in above-average shape, but the fringe/rough can have some issues. It is a fair test for golfers without any unfair situations or extremely tight approach shots. Good skill will be rewarded handedly.

Although my score didn't reflect it, I had a blast playing Hyland Gold today. This course is incredibly varied in layout. Art and I played the full 18, and I don't think I could closely compare any of the holes to each other. Bring a full bag of tricks when you play because this course has everything.
The front starts out in a more open and straight forward setting, but as you go along, new course aspects increase the difficulty. The course works its way into the woods mid-round, so you get a handful of holes in tight spaces before it pops out and gives you forced water approaches on some par 3s and 4s. It was like going on a hike!
The course wasn't in perfect shape, but it was certainly better than most I regularly play on. The fairways had some evidence of winter kill, but the areas had been scored for growth so as soon as we can get some decent sun, they should start coming back. The rest was very lush, but cut nicely with clean cuts to the rough. Even approach areas we well repaired. The rough was thick and playable - stood the ball up nicely most times. I wasn't at all up close and personal with the sand today (sweet!). From what I remember, the sand looked nice, but I don't think the edges were cut - could be wrong. The greens were probably the best and worst part! Impeccable in condition, the greens were lush and FAST. Throw in the fact that every putt will have some sort of grade and break to account for, and you've got your work cut out with the little stick.
We played 18 in just under 4 hours, and were never held up (although we were pushed for the first few holes). Hyland also has a separate 9 hole course and a par 3 course, which probably keeps a lot of people off the Gold. I'm super stoked on this course, and hopefully I'll play a little better next time.

Played gold course at Hyland Hills today with Tanner after seeing the review and photos on this site. The Gold course plays at 5,500 yards from the forward tees all the way to monster 7,100 yards Gold tees. This course is not your same old city opperated golf course NO Sir! this guy has a lot of interesting layouts for you to conquer and enjoy. The front nine starts out 5-4-5 with tripple dog legs left and right. The fairways are moderate wide but not to much and have several areas where the become very narrow and tree lined. The eighth hole a par 3 plays onto a island type layout. This not a true island hole but has the apperance of one as water plays on three sides of the green. One part of this course that seemed a little unusual is the fact that number 10 is located out on the course not anywhere near the clubhouse, you just continue thrugh your round. There is a snack shack located between 9-10 to ghrab a bite. Although you get the feeling the front nine plays a little tight the back nine plays other than number 10 which has a downhill tee shot to a possible blind second shot the fairways play much more open. Hole number 13 a par 3 has a huge pond in front of it and anything pushed right will be lost in the woods. The toughest hole to play here on your first attempt of this course would be the final hole number 18. This hole has a nasty hard dogleg left just past the bunkers on the right side after the 150 marker. This green is hidden into the trees with a very tight approach shot. As I said earlier this not a course you can take for granted and have a great score, you need to understand course managment if you expect to have a low round here. The overall condition of this course given the time of season and the weather we have been having was almost exellent. There are many greens that will test your abillity to read both the track and speed. I can not comment on the bunkers as I never had the chance to play out of them.There is a large driving range here but keep in mind it is a long walk to go there and with no signs telling you where it is ask in the clubhouse first. The practice green here is awesome not one that I am used to seeing. It is very large and has several different breaks for you to practice on, this a stop you really need to start with as the speed of the greens here are what you will feel out on the course. I gladly give this a 4 1/2 out of 5 and need to get back here for seconds and thirds.
